New Robocop could be dope.

It’s been rumoured for a few weeks, but now MGM Studios has confirmed it: Darren Aronofsky will be directing a remake of cult sci-fi satire Robocop.

MGM has also signed Road to Perdition and God of War writer David Self to pen the script and has fast-tracked the project, prepping it for a 2010 release.

Mary Parent, chairman of MGM, gushed, "Darren is undeniably one of the most talented, original and visceral film makers, and David is one of the greatest writers in Hollywood. All of us at MGM couldn’t be more excited."

Story details are still being kept under wraps, but an exec at producing company Phoenix Pictures promised an "entertaining and provocative film".

Hiring Aronofsky - who made his name with edgy, indie fare such as Pi and Requiem for a dream - for this project could either be a stroke of genius or the most stupid decision since Lions for Lambs was greenlit. What do you think?

It really doesn't. Even with Aronofsky -- he's a HUGE talent and I love his movies, but don't remake Robo.

Why not take some original screenplays out of the slush pile, I know most of them are there for a reason but COME ON!
