Tis a great show. Highly underrated. I think it destroys The Shield, and I love that show.

best show on tv ever, hands down

I've watched the entire series 3 times. Read David Simon & Ed Burns's books and am now watching The Corner miniseries.

I basically goaded my bandmates into getting obsessed with it, too. And two of my former roommates.

I have a problem

It's elude, kind of like how mastery of the English language is 'eluding' you.

Brian DC kept me locked in our practice space watching the Wir until I developed Stockholm syndrome and now live the series and him for it.

Best show on television. Hands down. I've watched it beginning to end probably 4 or 5 times. First season's a little slow. If you liked 1st season a lot, then you're in for a treat with the rest of them.

There was another (several) wire thread on this board where I was using microsoft local.live (like google maps but better) to find all the actual locations on the show.

i'm really starting to think this is the most overhyped tv show of all-time. i've watched the first 7 episodes of season 1 and it has been pretty boring so far. the only parts i like are when the gangstas say funny shit. one of my coworkers is having a hard time getting into it too. my boss said it gets a lot better in season 2. i sure fucking hope so. i've seen parts of later episodes and liked it, so i have some hope for the show.

Backed...season 1 is slow-er than the rest, mostly because there's a whole shit ton of plot and character development. One of the other seasons (3 maybe?) started like that too.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Mar 9,2009 10:24am
Yeah the boring plot development is so worth it though. It really sets it up for you to know the characters and give a shit about them. Watching this series from beginning to end is great too, because the characters really fucking go a long ways from where they started. The show has a lot of re-watch value too. The boring shit in season 1 is more interesting to watch the second time around I've noticed.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 9,2009 10:29am
i've had a hard time actually giving a shit about the characters, but i'm starting to. i was attached to the characters in the shield from the get-go, but it's taking a while for me to warm up to the wire's characters. unlike the shield, i like the criminals more than the cops, but then again, that line is blurred in the shield anyway.i feel more compassion for characters like d'angelo barksdale and wallace than i do for mcnulty and the cops. the gangsters are way more interesting.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Mar 9,2009 10:32am
They definitely are in the beginning, I agree. You start to start caring about the cops too after awhile though. Such a fucking epic show.

Also, Ken.. season 2 has very little to do with drugs & the drugdealers. This sounds like bullshit but they introduce a whole new set of "bad guys" to go after, but it's one of the best seasons. I have no idea how this show managed to make this move and not ruin itself, but it pulled it off. Season 3 and on focuses more back on drugs. Then the following seasons after that focus on schools and then politics. Every season has a theme.

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Mar 9,2009 10:32am
Well, The Shield started with a bang....literally and figuratively....The Wire (from what I saw) is a lot slower to develop

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Mar 9,2009 10:40am
But far better in my opinion. I like The Shield too, but they're 2 totally different flavors. The Shield is ridiculously far fetched and just action oriented. It moves a lot faster. The Wire is a lot slower, but when there's action, you jizz your pants. The Wire is pretty true to life and accurate too (which is pretty fucking scary).

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Mar 9,2009 10:45am
I'm gonna try The Wire again at some point....The Shield is the best show of all time IMO, so if The Wire is better, I obviously want to see it

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at Mar 9,2009 10:47am
the shield is my favorite show ever, but the wire is definitely more realistic. the shield has more action than real life and the wire has a lot of slow parts like real life. 2 completely different shows, but both have their strengths. i'm starting to appreciate the wire after getting over my initial impatience with it.

I GOT THE WMD'S!

toggletoggle post by RustyPS  at Mar 9,2009 11:17am
while story is very important to any show, it's hard to get into something (at least for me) when a whole starts off with most or all story

an example of this is (and this might be annoying that The Shield and The Wire are being compared to each other constantly, even though as most people who've seen both series say, they're two completely different shows) Season 6 of The Shield was pretty slow by that show's standards, but I still thought it was good because I knew they were going for, and I had confidence in their writers giving some sort of pay off (which they did in Season 7)...maybe if I had got past where I got in The Wire, I would appreciate the beginning of the series more...I just couldn't see where it all was leading to

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Mar 9,2009 12:13pm
Yeah, that's one thing I don't understand about The Wire. I was kind of forced to watch the whole beginning of the series. I actually remember falling asleep for some of it. Could be a fuck up on the writers' part. In the beginning the show definitely doesn't hold your attention. Honestly, if I wasn't coaxed into sticking with it, I don't know if I'd have ever become a fan and watched the rest of the series.

toggletoggle post by Pires at Mar 9,2009 12:22pm

I agree, I thought from the get-go it was brilliant, and quite refreshing from the usual ploys series' use to hold attention.

just finished season 5 moments ago. i didn't want to look in this thread til I was finished....

i never really watch tv shows and this was easily the greatest one I've ever seen. superb character development. fucking hours and hours of unforgettable television.

season 1 - fucking stellar, i thought the pilot was the weakest episode in the whole series but so much shit goes on, it ain't no thang.

season 2 - honestly i liked this the least, i fucking hated ziggy, frank is the man.

season 3 - i got lost a lil here and there and definately had to review some scenes over but it's worth it cause there are so many lil twists in this one it's hard not to be lost, maybe it's cause i took a month off between episdoes or something. this is when the show gets fucking compelling, in a IRL kinda way, yah know what I mean? OMAR SON.

season 4 - probably my favorite season in the history of television. being utterly dynamic on so many levels now that the public schools come into play. i still think snoop is a dude.

season 5 - gus was probably one of the most interesting characters in the show and it was kinda shitty we didn't see more of him, however it's a nice compliment and balance to the weird storyline, presented by the reporter and mcnulty. what's the moral? how long can you live a lie? abuse of power? seemed to be a common theme for every character this season.

random thoughts
jimmy mcnulty is fucking english, wtf
the red headed DA had one of the best makeovers in the history of tv
leo fitzpatrick takes some of the most fucked roles ever, YES.

can't wait to watch this again!

Glad you dug it Josh.

One thing I noticed is that now you know what all the characters are about, season 1 isn't nearly as slow. The series has great re-watch potential. I think a lot of season 1 just went over my head the first time I saw it because I didn't really know what anybody was all about yet. It's very interesting to re-watch that shit now though.
