Comma poll - usless poll
1Never use a comma
2Always use a comma
3Random
no vote

toggletoggle post by retzam at Feb 6,2004 2:15pm
Ok, we all know that comma use at the end of a list is optional. Example:

My favorite kinds of ice cream are strawberry, chocolate, and vanilla.

and

My favorite kinds of ice cream are strawberry, chocolate and vanilla.

are both exceptable sentences with no grammer errors. So, which one to you use?

P.S. This poll is the most useless poll ever.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 2:17pm
actually it's a funny poll..never is my vote

toggletoggle post by retzam at Feb 6,2004 2:18pm
I voted always. Not using a comma just doesn't make sense in my mind for some reason.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2004 2:26pm
I always use one...
so you can say
I like apples, strawberries and cream, and heinze catsup and cheese
meaning
(apples) && (strawberries U cream) && (heinze catsup U cheese)

if not, precedence is messed up:
apples, strawberries and cream and heinze catsup and cheese
meaning
(apples) && (strawberries U cream U heinze catsup U cheese)??
(apples) && (strawberries U cream U heinze catsup) && cheese??

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2004 2:28pm
sorry... though U's should actually be
the set S where there exists a x = y = S

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 2:29pm
well in that case i would use one...but i still wouldn't vote random..

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 2:29pm
then again i also spell
check (you get from the bank) = cheque
and favorite = favourite

and you get the drill...

Do you also spell
color = colour
aluminum = aluminium

?

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 2:34pm
colour and aluminum..but i sometimes say aluminium...heh, then again i thought "Ceramic" was pronounced CHERamic until a few years ago *cough* because i'm a damn foreigner*cough*
ohh retzam...how about this one...and anyone else who feels like replying...

what would you say:
an RTTP newsletter
a RTTP newsletter

i would say AN because even though it starts with the letter R, the way you say it is: ARE..so it sounds like a vowel and hence you use AN and not A

Yeah, I agree with that. It would sound foolish otherwise. How about this one:

My friend and I
Me and my friend

strategery!

ohh and aaron:
The form an for the indefinite article is used before a spoken vowel sound, regardless of how the written word is spelt. If you say 'an otel' when speaking (which is now often regarded as distinctly old-fashioned), then it may be appropriate for you to write 'an hotel'; but most people say 'hotel' with a sounded 'h', and should write 'a hotel'. By contrast, words such as 'honour', 'heir' or 'hour' in which the 'h' sound is dropped are written with 'an'. Americans who drop the 'h' in 'herb' may also prefer to write 'an herb', but in standard British pronunciation the 'h' is sounded, and 'a herb' is therefore correct in writing. Because 'European' is said with an initial 'y' sound, which counts as a consonantal sound in English speech, it is said (and written) with 'a' not 'an'. An abbreviation such as M.P., which is pronounced em pea, begins with a spoken vowel, and so it is 'an M.P.'

there is your proof that retzam, DOM and myself are correct

toggletoggle post by retzam at Feb 6,2004 3:22pm

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 3:26pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2004 3:29pm
you both are gay.
I just wanted to see the rule.
we were just debating that thing here.
someone said they had the same argument a few years ago and is looking up the rule for me.

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Feb 6,2004 4:44pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2004 4:45pm

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 6,2004 7:08pm
"And" takes the place of the comma; comma + and = grammatically incorrect.

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Feb 6,2004 7:10pm
that's how i learned it. so yeah. meh.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Feb 6,2004 7:13pm

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2004 11:58pm

You learned it wrong, pussy.
Trust me on this one, I own grammar. (I don't own spelling as I had to look up grammar to make sure it ended 'ar' not 'er')

toggletoggle post by MyDeadDoll   at Feb 7,2004 2:28am
no you don't.

i belive it's suppposed to be written:

Trust me on this one; I own grammar.

they're two independent clauses, so they need
to be separated by a semi-colon. right?

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 7,2004 2:44am
Shut up; I own you.
Better? ~~slaps you around because you're a woman~~

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 7,2004 2:46am

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 7,2004 3:42am
