Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.

In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That's right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.

Investors have reason to sweat. In a statement, Sony claimed "the large-scale investment required during the development and introductory period of a new gaming platform may not be fully recovered." They went on to note that they've invested a great deal of money into R&D for the console, a sum they might not be able to recoup if the PS3 "fails to achieve such favorable market penetration."

Sony fanboys should take heart, however. Losing money on hardware is relatively common in the video game biz, as companies routinely lower prices to sell more units and thus stimulate software sales. Sony's game division saw a 26% sales spike last quarter, a trend they expect will continue on the strength of strong exclusives like the recently released Metal Gear Solid 4 and the upcoming sequel Resistance 2.

But will it be enough?

hAHA, losers. I lost all faith in sony after PS2, a stellar system but they were made of shit. The 360 I just bought was over $150 cheaper, a ton more awesome games, more accessories, and I have yet to experiance one single problem.

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 27,2008 12:57pm
yeah I am loyal to the 360 out of all the new systems. Wii is a good time with friends, but over all I say 360 owns everything out at the moment.

the 360 is a joke it has already reached the hardware limits I've never had a console lag till I played ninja gaiden 2

plus the only big games on it are FPS a genre that needs to die

toggletoggle post by aril at Jun 27,2008 1:37pm
FPS games aren't going to die for a while, man. they're the ones that push the boundaries as far as gaming physics go

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 27,2008 1:37pm
FPSFTW!!!!!!!

I am all about gears of war. Game rules.

toggletoggle post by boine at Jun 27,2008 2:02pm
Gears was great just far to short
2 is looking good plus bender is the main guy and fps only get good graphics other then bioshock which was at least unique and had good story

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 27,2008 2:06pm
GOW2 sounds great so far. I wish GOW was longer my self. I am excited to see what direction the story line goes in.

toggletoggle post by boine at Jun 27,2008 2:08pm

try picking it up while it's turned on.

or accidentally pull the power chord out of the machine while it's on.

I am on my 3rd it runs ok freezes on some games it nice they dont charge u for the repair but I would also like one that works

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 27,2008 2:27pm
the ps3 is a better design with better QA and better parts inside, but with not many games.
the 360 is a PC with PC problems, but there are a shitton of games.

I've been gaming since nes and i've never done one of those to a consol. Plus nearly everything is wireless for the 360, how would this happen unless you were a ignorant retard?

also first gen 360s will lag ninja gaiden 2, and some won't even play GTA4. New ones have no problem.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 27,2008 2:29pm
I pulled the plug out of my NES all the time when it would f-up

toggletoggle post by boine at Jun 27,2008 2:35pm
Well microsoft sent me one at the start of the year and still lagged I hate them the ps3 just needs to improve in America other then that its doing great and mgs4 sales did a little but still needs more exclusives

toggletoggle post by boine at Jun 27,2008 2:37pm

half the fun of the nes was trying to get the games to work. i remember being five or six and afraid to take out 1944 because it took me nearly a hour to get it to work.

they probably sent you a refurbished shitty one. Microsoft is still evil, but non-first gen 360s rock.

Took the words right out of my keypad. Seriously, you have to be retarded to treat a system like that. What are you, fucking 10? Even then I wouldn't be so careless. I spent $340 on that thing, I treat it like its a fucking premature baby.

GTA4 runs very smoothly, but like I just stated:

I am sending the one I got now back soon till I get one that actually works but they are kinda screwed hard ware and disc space sony will gain on then over the next year or so

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 27,2008 2:52pm
I think sony's internal drives are small and they didn't keep the psone/ps2 support in the 40/80GB.

Good thing I can hook up an external to it easily.

toggletoggle post by DYA / NLI at Jun 27,2008 3:16pm
I think GTA4 and Metal Gear are gonna give PS3 a huge boost over the next year. The biggest problem it's had so far is "great system, NO FUCKING GAMES."

toggletoggle post by boine at Jun 27,2008 3:25pm
metal gear has already uped sales a tad but its the best all around console game hopefully it helps a lot in the us

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 27,2008 4:04pm
I am all about the 360's online play. It makes games so much more fun to play. I think it's online system is 10 to 1 against anything else out. I kind of forget what it is like to have a stock 360 since mine modded like hell, but I honestly can't ask for more.

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Jun 28,2008 2:52pm
i've been agonizing over which system to buy, ps3 or 360. from everything i hear, 360 looks like the way to go. what does rttp recommend?

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 28,2008 2:57pm
360

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Jun 28,2008 2:59pm
360 for now then sell it and get a ps3 when FFXIII comes out.

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Jun 28,2008 3:13pm
the only thing that really matters to me is Resident Evil. 5 will be on both platforms, so i guess that really doesn't factor in.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 28,2008 3:29pm
ps3 ftw

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 28,2008 4:00pm
actually a more detailed answer. I would look at all the games and make a decision based on that. if it was just RE5 and you HAD to buy it today, I would definitely say PS3. mostly cause the hardware is so much newer and the cellprocessor is the best processor I've ever touched. if you wait for the last possible minute, microsoft could possible trump the ps3 with a newer hardware flush (possibly adding a cell graphic processor)

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Jun 28,2008 5:44pm
what about all the different models. do you really need 120gb?

toggletoggle post by Joshtruction   at Jun 28,2008 5:48pm
my 360 now has a 400 gig internal HD + the 80 external. I store so much shit in there it is not even funny, so yeah big hard drives are cool to have.

http://www.blizzard.com/diablo3/ < will crush EVERYTHING

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jun 28,2008 6:01pm
DT: if I were you, I woul get a 80 gb if they are backwards compatible with ps1/2 and you have ps1/2 games. if not, the PS3 60gb rules. just enough space. then you can hook up an external wicked easily.

toggletoggle post by DomesticTerror at Jul 22,2008 9:26pm
i guess they released more of the MGS4 80G bundles. it's on its way. and i'm on vaca next week. huzzah!
