Well I was at Marks space today checking out his new Savage 120 and took a couple pics to post here. All I can say is that Engl rips all them other amps for his style of music. IMO it sounds drastically better than all of the other amps. I also liked the tone better with none of the rack stuff than with the maximizer and EQ. Still has lots of tweaking to do, but it already sound incredible.

I was standing 10-15 feet in front of his rig. He had just the Savage and the cabs going and I could literally feel the hair on my arms moving from the wall of sound. Intense!

Goreality has some sick fucking shit going on!

the dc-5 gets a much wider tonal spectrum than the rectoid and there is strong, intelligible variations in tone from 1-10 on each pot. the parametric eq is a really awesome feature and adds alot for fine tuning and shaping. it has characteristically, much "sweeter" tones imo than the recto.

what sets the unit apart from others is that it has truly dynamic mids and an overall warm, organic sound that is uncommon these days. but as to which one crushes more, it's simple. 50 watts vs 150 watts.

toggletoggle post by joey umbrella at Jun 19,2008 6:35pm

FISHCAKES!

WTF is that amp on top? It looks EXACTLY like an old Mesa, but it says Mesa/Boogie. I never saw one with those knobs & EQ combo post merger. What is it? It looks like the mesa pre-amp I used to have.

toggletoggle post by GodlessRob at Jun 23,2008 1:07pm
Really? Cool Thanks bro.

toggletoggle post by GodlessRob at Jun 23,2008 1:08pm
Pete it's a DC-5

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 23,2008 1:10pm
I barely know my Mesa/Boogie history. I haven't liked the sound of anything they made after merging brands. That's why I'm curious. When was this made? Does it sound like the old Mesa amps? It LOOKS like a mesa with a new name badge on it.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 23,2008 1:15pm
Yeah, I'm wicked confused. Basically, i used to have something that looked like this:

But it just said "Mesa" on it, no Boogie. Sounded killer. More classic rock than metal, but with an overdrive in front it was creamy and warm and made awesome hardcore/chuggy tones.

Doing an image search, I find lots of stuff that looks like it, but it either says "boogie" or "mesa boogie". So the preamp was made under both names?

I'd love to find something like that preamp again.

toggletoggle post by fishcakes at Jun 23,2008 1:17pm
yah' it's an older head, it's 50 watts all tube and it is pretty bad ass! not as much gain as the triple but it cuts like a mofo...it has a verry shavy sound...good thrash amp. gonna use it in N.J. this weekend.

corpus_colostomy said[orig][quote]

you have done a killer job of reading previous posts peter.

Indeed, I have. However, if you talk about a DC-5 doesn't mean I know what head it is.

I'm starting to think that I had a mesa/boogie, with a faded logo or something, because I find no history of mesa ever making anything that looked like that. That's the boogie amp look.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 23,2008 1:33pm
I think I figured it out.

Mesa never made amps under the Mesa name, it's just what he used after Fender stopped supplying him with Princetons. They DID however make a few combo amps where the Preamp said "Mesa" and then the speaker box had the "Boogie" brand. I think my rackmound was actually the preamp section from a combo amp. It would make sense, because the kid I bought it from did the same thing to a Crate right afterward.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Jun 23,2008 1:40pm
pete, what is all this 'merger' hubub you're talking about. All old mesa (pre 80s) had a 'boogie' badge on it. Mesa engineering was the amp modification end of them, and boogie was their amp making end of it. They decided to merge the names together at the end of the 80s/early 90s.

The dc (dual caliber) series was created as a 'budget' amp to bridge the mark series and the rectos. The tone is more smoothed over and classic mesa sounding in comparison to the rectos with the added versatility of having the graphic eq, a signature trademark of mesa.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHeadNLI at Jun 23,2008 1:48pm
I say "merger" because I'd seen mesa/boogie, and seen boogie amps without the mesa bage. I assumed then that they also produced amps under the name "mesa" at one point, since I had that preamp which said "mesa".

Bear with me. I know diddly shit about tube amps. I always will, because I can't afford em, and I don't like the sound of the ones I COULD afford. I'd take modeling over a $500 tube amp any day.

both the gx-130c and the stealth series were/are solid as shit. 150 is a little under the going used rate for the crate, and its well worth it.

GX130c is the BEST solid amp! I have 2 amp heads. Both were perfect for ten years of hard use.

MIKE K- The Engl is an all valve "Digital amp" It is a one channel head that has four memory slots for saving settings. There were only a few hundered made. It does not exist ANYWHERE. The sound is like a over driven SUNN amp. there is no info for it. I will try to post a pic soon of all my studio suff.
