What modern black metal should sound like - 94%
Written by Kruel on May 28th, 2008

This differs from any other black metal band, while still being clearly black metal. There are sonly 3 songs and this EP plays for only about 20 minutes, but this easily tops most of the black metal full-lengths released lately.

The fundamental greatness of this album is riffage. There is very little contest in the context of black metal as far as riffage goes. These riffs are genius. These riffs are not what you usually hear in a black metal album, or any kind of music, for that matter. Sure, there are a lot of tremolo riffs (which are awesome by themselves, by the way; the tremolo riffs here generally feature a lot of different notes, about 16), but in addition to that, there are plenty of totally unorthodox and sophisticated riffs. The riffs are very twisted, with some of the riffs reminding me of Melechesh (but less oriental and much darker). The riff toward the end of the third song (in which it seems like they are bending the string) is a prime example of and absolutely twisted and eerie riff. The riff at about 1:30 of the first song is also totally mind-blowing, with slides, sweeps, and the thrash-styled striking of the muffled open sixth string (8 times). The riffs alternate between slow and fast, with some being doomish, not only in speed but also in their crushing atmosphere. The second track features a lot of slower riffs. The pinch harmonics usage at the end of the tremolo riff in the first part of the third song is worth mentioning, because they sound so heavy and nothing like other pinch harmonics I have heard. I cannot really think of a more riffy black metal album at this point, maybe except The Ritual by Master¡¯s Hammer. And that album, though the riffing style is entirely different, is probably the closet to this EP, meaning that this one is epic, too. Not epic in the way of, say, Summoning, but definitely epic, with the sheer power of guitar riffs itself. And despite the totally unorthodox riffs, the final result is undeniably black metal (not black/death, black/thrash, black/doom or whatever).

Moreover, there are lots of moments in which the two guitars do different things, usually one guitar tremolo picking and the other playing arpeggios. Well, I am not entirely sure if they are actual arpeggios (meaning that each note is a part of a broken chord), but there are definitely sweeping of strings. This technique adds to the overall feeling of eeriness, since there are some other notes being heard while the tremolo riffs are in progress. There is a guitar solo near the end of the third song, and this is very great. The guitarist is really a maestro of melodic intervals; the combination of the notes from the solo and the notes from the riff beneath it sound as if the solo was written with the calculation of its interaction with the riff. I really wish they play more solos in their (hopefully) upcoming full-length.

The guitar tone is heavy as fuck, and every instrument is heard well. Yeah, the production is very clean, but it does not come off as too polished, nor is there any problem. Basically, perfect production. While the guitars are clearly the driving force of the album, the vocals and the drums work to complement the sound and are flawlessly executed. Drums are interesting with the right amount of blasting, and the vocals, while never coming off as prominent in the sound, reveal hatred and aggression, with a sense of control.

This is one of the greatest, if not the greatest, black metal in the modern era. This work is highly original, while not being gimmicky at all. I really look forward to a full-length, and I think it will have the possibility of becoming one of my favorite black metal albums.
