I say there are too many things in the universe unexplained to think 100% either way that there is a God (or gods) or not. Science proves many things wrong about Christianity, but nothing can or ever will prove the exsistance or non-exsistance of a God. There is nothing wrong with believing or not believing unless you are 100% one way, which is folly.

what do you guys think about people having near death experiences and explaining the experience of seeing a bright light, ect ect?

when my great-grandmother was dying, my family all were gathered around her in her hospital bed as she died. from what everyone tells me that was in there with her she apparently reached her arm out into the air and my family told her to "go towards the light" then she died.

I don't believe in god, I have never been baptised, or brough up with any religious background...but I think it's kind of wierd when people almost die but come back to life and explain what happend. The way I think of it is "I'll find out when I die."

If you've ever done certain mind altering drugs, you would know that when your brain looses oxygen, hallucinations can occur and your mind is somewhat "set free" and wanders through different thoughts, much like a dream. Also, when your brain shuts down, senses can still be active like hearing and feeling. When people die, their senses are active for hours and maybe days, depending on the sickness.

GOD
"The one supreme being,
the creator and ruler of the universe."

The one who came out of nowhere and for some reason created this universe we live in. The one who created us humans, the one race "he" expects to do what "he" feels is right even though we had no choice of existing and would be condemned to eternal suffering for taking ones own life. The one who expects us to believe all that is written in "his" book, even though science is quickly proving it all wrong. The one who expects us to believe in a story about a man and his boat with two of each animal in the world. The one who punishes the human race for the mistake of one of the only two people on earth at the time and SUPRISE!!! It was a woman. The one who allowed "evil" empires to spread across the world in "his" name. The one who would damn us for giving in to our natural urges which "he gave us" in the first place. The one who allows the greedy and corrupt to succeed while the good suffer. The one who created and allowed the "lord of evil" (satan) to rule this world for so long. The one who mentions nothing about the Dinosaurs or the other billions of planets in "his" book. The one who explains nothing of how humans have existed alot longer than what was written in "his" book. The one who would send a decent human being to hell simply for not believing in "him".
The one who was created by a man who needed an answer.

In "him" I choose not to believe. -DVM

That's pretty much the way it is for me too. Also, regarding that rather large post swamplord, how come the author doesn't mention that Jesus had nothing to do with the writing of the Bible? The bible was written by the apostles, loosely based on the teachings of Jesus. How then is it "his" (god's) book, when he, and his son, had nothing to do with the writing of it, whether he exists or not? What do those initials stand for at the bottom (is this a really ignorant question? I have a feeling it is)? Whoever it is, they are sorely mistaken in their reasonings. Now, regarding that sign, are you Dick Hurtz?

Retzam, twat i meant by "his" book whas the old testament. (remeber there are two.) and yes "god" or "his" son did NOT write the book, twas abunch of humans. The book (the first testament) is supposed to be about twat "god" did and twat "he" wants from us and how this crappy world was created. And most of that crap written in the first book is WHACK especially the stuff about the earth being created in, what was it? A week or so. HA!!! My reasons why i don't believe in god. Look to science people, it explains alot more the the bible ever will. DVM are MY initials.

dude that is beyond true. i have several books on atheism (unfortunately i haven't gotten around to reading most of them yet, i've taken a reading break as of late) but one book i read is sheer brilliance as far as proving Christianity wrong. it's called Atheism: The Case Against God by George H. Smith. in simple terms, he dissects the very concept of the Christian god and gives logical reasons as to how "he" cannot exist. case in point: it is said that God is Omniscient and Omnipotent, all knowing and all powerful. now that's ALL knowing and ALL powerful. meaning there is nothing he doesn't know, and there is nothing he cannot do. so think about this. if god knows what the future is, then he cannot change the future. the future is out of god's control. if he could change the future, then he simply has an idea of the what the future could be, which any mere mortal could do. so basically, not even god can be both omniscient and omnipotent.

Also, if god does know what the future holds, why did he even bother creating mankind? he could see what a failed experiment we would become. he already knew of WW2, 9/11, ect. well before he even created us. if he "loves" us so much, why would he have created us to put us through that kind of suffering and chaos?

i once saw a movie where a man was preaching at a church. he picked up a woman's baby, held the baby out to the crowd and said "look at this child. this beautiful little child. look at his hands. now i don't have enough love for this child, to drive a stake through his hands.......... god does." does anyone else see the absolute insanity in that statement???????

finally, my favorite of all my arguments in this subject, one that i discovered myself. for any of you that might have a bible at home, open it up and read Genesis 6:6. it says "and god felt regrets that he had made men in the earth, and he felt hurt in his heart." basically what that means is, god made a mistake creating mankind. it was wrong of him to create us.....wait a second....... i thought god was infallible. think about that.

Yes, dinos are cool as shit. Remember DinoRicky? Always going around killing all those dinosaurs? Man that was a bummer. Anyway, all you guys are doing is over and over again proving that the Christian god can't exsist as the bible says he is, infallible, omnipotent, etc. Do you realize that Christianity is a relatively new religion and most other, and older, religions don't recognize God, or in most cases, the gods, as infallible beings? Why not discuss the gods of ancient Greece, Rome, etc. How about the Norse gods? All of you are too dead set on proving the bible wrong (when in fact the bible isn't even the basis of Christianity) that you are forgetting about the major picture here. And swamplord, you didn't answer my second question ("Are you Dick Hurtz?"). Please someone get that joke.

Although i don't believe in god, Kalopsia's statement was pretty weak. There is no way to prove there is no god. All you have proven is that that type of God doesn't exist. Science can only go as far as to prove that all aspects of life are possible with out a God-which it pretty much has. That, however, does not mean that there is no god at all. And your attempt at saying that 'god' is suppossed to be the protector of man is weak as well. According to christians, whose god ur trying to disprove, god created man w/ free will...so if people start WW2, or 9/11 he's forced to sit back and watch.

anyways, go to the Ken Haskell/In My Sorrow show the 6th at the kingston k of c-8pm. It's ken haskell's debut show and it should be a doosey

i never said there was no god. i truly don't know if there is or isn't one. if i had to choose though, i'd say there isn't. i was simply proving falcities with the christian god. someone brought up a good point before, if we have free will, why are we punished for using that free will? (example, lust) if the answer is because god wants/expects us to do what he believes is the "right" thing, then that's not free will.

I believe Mark Twain's got this covered. I forget the name, but the one where the guy animated clay and then killed the people.

God (in concept) gave us free will, knowing that it'll turn out badly.

In reality (as I see it), God, god, gods, crop circles, magical runes, etc... are all just our human brains trying to make sense out of things. And hell, what's the most senseless thing? Death? yep, and so it goes that all the religion base on explaining this... and maybe giving meaning to death (afterlife). What's the second mystery? where we came from?
these are all things to put people's minds at easy so they can focus on the daily stuff.
I see no problem in people beliving in christ or buddha or the anhk around their neck or whatever if it helps them get through life to do the things they have to do.
just don't step on anyone else's toes.

oh and christ was just like michael jackson... he was black and then became white. though now jesus is used in the name of people hating blacks... which is a whole other ball of wax. love thy brother.

Yes im aware of the "pagan" gods. they are just as silly as the monotheistic "god". but in those days people knew very little about the universe that they lived in. Now we are learning so much more. I just think its silly that one can believe in a force that came out of nothingness and was an intelligent being since the begining. Some of my best friends believe in "god", and all were raised in religious families. I think that kids that are raised in a open family will be more open to the rest of the world.
And actually I know Dick Hurtz. He's often BLUE. Sometimes when he's happy he can be rather kind and TENDER. But when he's having a HARD day he can be a real PRICK. Sometimes I just want to CHOKE him and SLAP him around. But I wouldn't dare TOUCH him. He tends to SPIT when he's mad. He just needs to learn to get a GRIP on things. But you gotta give him a big HAND for living with such a name.

to each there own but i, for one, am for God.
He's the reason i can get up everyday. He's the one who puts up with me when no one else will. He's loves me no matter what and that i way more than i can say for anyone else.
seriously, not to sound like the right wing fanatic but, He amazes me. and i am far from being weak minded.

so like i said, we're all entitled to believe or to not believe. but honestly, i can't think of anything i'd rather believe in than Him.

heh to the last 2 posts...but on a serious note

technically i'm roman catholic...
i was not brought up religious though, i go to church once a year...more if multiple people die (funerals), but usually i will go for a celebration like a baptism, communion, confirmation, marriage, etc. last time i went to church was a little less than a year ago for my best friend's wedding (ps: the reverend didn't burn or melt in the church btw ;) )
anyhow, you get the point...
my dad never respected the church, he went to school and was taught by priests in italy and he used to see them eat meat on friday's (a SIN, or so they say)...got treated unjustly etc. oh and he didn't have any rape stories from school, thank goodness.

my mom went to school and was taught by nuns and most were bitchy and she used to get hit by them quite a bit.

i had 2 friends in italy who were nuns....and awesome people...

but the rest of my nun experiences...not pleasurable...i would get punished because i wanted to sing and dance when they wanted me to get on my knees and pray (no i wasn't in church)

anyhow...i don't believe in the strictness of the church and their beliefs and i was not brought up to believe in them as such...

but i grew up believing in god and jesus etc. i also went to catholic school...
then as i grew older
i lost a lot of people close to me..old and young and when i lost my dad...i completely lost it.
and lost a lot of faith...after he died i went looking for the answer and explored many religious faiths and went to many different religious ceremonies...trying to find my answers...hey i was still young...

i remember going to the first church of science in montreal and the priest was a woman and you meditated for the first half and then during the second half she would call out to people and tell them...(A la john edward) that someone died and they were in the room and blah blah...she never said anything to me...i was disheartened...

after he died...my mom became more religious and attended church more regularly...and prayed for my dad...the more prayers he gets and the better person he was the quicker he would get out of purgatory and get to heaven...anyhow..i prayed..althoguh not 100% convinced...i thought "what if"...and so i did whatever i could do to help my dad...the weird thing is that i would have dreams about him...quite a bit...and when he was alive we would often talk about our dreams etc. we would both do lucid dreaming and stuff...he told me when you died...it was like a dream...if you were a bad person...then you had bad dreams...if you were a good person..good dreams...well...in my dreams of him he would tell me about things that were about to happen...and give me advice...say what you will...but it's true..i do think that some of my dreams were wishful thinking...but some...i cannot explain and won't go into further detail.

my dreams of him now are rare...and i still don't know what to believe in...i think there is something...there HAS to be..imho...but what it is..i don't know...

i know what aaron's beliefs are and a lot of people on here...i don't like talking about this..because it depresses me...i used to get scared thinknig about death and dying...what if there is nothing? (which is what my boyfriend thinks) that would drive me crazy..the fact of not existing and not being around to think about this..fuck..i'm getting a headache just writing and thinknig about it....anyhow...
i don't think about it as much and i try to stay away from this topic with atheistics..esp since my dad died young...and i never got to say goodbye...and he had a really hard life growing up....
so you mean to tell me that's it?
well he got fucking ripped off if that's the case.
oh man sorry for the novel
i'm done

to think there is nothing is foolish.
to think there is something better is too.

I'm guessing once you have a kid (not that I do) and look into their eyes, you will know what there is and what there is is them. but that's what I think.
I guess "I believe that children are our future"

The reason I get up in the morning is Music and friends. Thats all I need for now. I don't need to believe in anything to live, just enjoy what little there is to enjoy. Some times I wish I believed in a higher force, It would probably make life alot easier. I think some times people need hope in their lives and that is why some choose to "believe"...but i don't belive so i wouln't know.

it is said that God is Omniscient and Omnipotent, all knowing and all powerful. now that's ALL knowing and ALL powerful. meaning there is nothing he doesn't know, and there is nothing he cannot do. so think about this. if god knows what the future is, then he cannot change the future. the future is out of god's control. if he could change the future, then he simply has an idea of the what the future could be, which any mere mortal could do. so basically, not even god can be both omniscient and omnipotent.

Also, if god does know what the future holds, why did he even bother creating mankind? he could see what a failed experiment we would become. he already knew of WW2, 9/11, ect. well before he even created us. if he "loves" us so much, why would he have created us to put us through that kind of suffering and chaos?

How can that prove that God cannot change the future? Every event throughout history has served a purpose in God's plan and an omniscient being would know every possible outcome to every event throughout time as soon as it came to being. Why do bad things happen? Because without those bad things mankind would not have free will and man would not be a complete being. It would be akin to my parents locking me in a room and attending K-Grad School for me. I would never experience pain but I would be deprived of any semblance of a life, I would be and have nothing. Even Camus' Mersault supports the importance of life experience, with his declaration that even a man who has lived only one day on this earth would have enough memories to last a 100 years, and Mersualt's soliloquy in the final chapter where he denies that he wished to alter any major aspects of his life.

As for punishment of free will, I do not think of Hell as a punishment, it is not as if God is breaking his promise with man. A soul in Hell is still in God's kingdom, still exists, and can still think which is better than nothing. To me Hell is like a remedial class, you go there to learn things you should have known while you were alive. (I'm not a hardcore Christian or anything, I just mean things like basic decency and knowing not to murder people) When you know these things you can move on up.

Actually, I would rather like to hear Dom discuss why god can't/doesn't exist, since all he has contributed so far are numerous posts either simply stating he doesn't exist or saying that we are ignorant.

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 7,2004 10:49pm
I never said anyone was ignorant, I said the bibble didn't have dinosaurs in it which made me sad and made me question the validity of Christianity when I was all of three. And I said that I don't like discussing religion/god because I've already come to my own conclusions regarding it all and so have most other people, especially in a community like RttP, and I've never seen a discussion such as this do anything to change someone's mind or open someone's views toward the subject at hand. Just look at this thread already, how many people have been actually listen, and how many are in a high-and-mighty huff because someone else didn't give in to their opinion. Ideas of religion and god fuck everything up, I'm happier and better off without either, thank you very much.

Word up.

Sorry, if I appeared to be in a high and mighty huff. I asked a question and you answered, which was all I care about. Anyway, I have been listening to everyone in this thread, and most of the others have too. Very few actually completely believe in God (one person right?) so of course there is no real argument, and no one has tried to change anyone's opinion. That wasn't the point of this thread in the first place. Sorry about my mention of you saying we were ignorant; for the 874648938th time in my life, I have mistaken one of Spaldino's posts for yours.

toggletoggle post by DeOdiumMortis  at Feb 7,2004 11:49pm
Spaldino's the fat brunette, I'm the fat blonde, get it right!!
The high and mighty huff... I've been getting this thread and the latest white supremacy thread mixed up as their the two threads I'm basically avoiding, so I'll admit I was a bit off in throwing that one in here. But c'mon man, you put me on the defensive by saying I called everyone ignorant, thought I too see now that that was thinking I was Spalding again.
Your sins are forgiven, praise god.

Hmmm... this is a tough one. To prevent a Crusade between the Revians and the Åkerfeldtians, let us all worship the idealistic diety: a fusion of Aaron and Mikael. He will becalled Mikon (pronounced meek-on). ALL BOW TO MIKON!!!!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 8,2004 12:50pm
I was on the meek-on delta in 'nam.
the meekon's are a noisey rock band.

Science, self and life to name a few. We can all find our own things to believe in for our own personal reasons and no one can say "I'm right, you're wrong" because there's no dysfunctional organization behind it.
I don't believe in any sort of god but I do believe in some spiritual things that help me get through life.
