Who in your opinion has the best representation of current death metal right now?

Europe or the States?

(im not asking black metal, folk, pagan, lute, or whetever the fuck else. pretty much only interested in the top 3% of the sick DM bands from both countries)

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 30,2008 8:55am
I'd say it's pretty even. We have most of the brutal stuff. They have most of the tech stuff.

But I guess we have Florida and California, so I don't really know.

toggletoggle post by corpus_colostomy at Apr 30,2008 9:01am
yeah i dunno about the brutal thing, it seems that way at first, but i mean they have despondency, defeated sanity, beheaded...those bands alone blow alot of so called brutal american bands out of the water imo.

toggletoggle post by corpus_colostomy at Apr 30,2008 9:04am
fuck, inveracity and suffocate bastard are pretty fahking brutal as well.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 30,2008 9:07am
Good points, definitely. Europe may be beating us out.
We need more good bands.

toggletoggle post by corpus_colostomy at Apr 30,2008 9:13am
kinda feels that way dont it..

toggletoggle post by blue  at Apr 30,2008 9:33am
europe 2 to 1

toggletoggle post by aril at Apr 30,2008 10:09am
Insert the word "South" before 'American Metal' and we may have a competition

toggletoggle post by corpus_colostomy at Apr 30,2008 10:14am

but we have awesome american bands like cryptosy.

toggletoggle post by aril at Apr 30,2008 10:38am
I'm waiting for someone to come in here saying "The Faceless are the best American Death Metal band since... well, since Morbid Angel! And they're 12 years old!!"

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Apr 30,2008 10:54am
U.S. has too many boring bands.

toggletoggle post by CNV at Apr 30,2008 11:01am
American death metal is terrible... Used to be good in the early 90's. Now it's all a rehash of pyrexia and suffocation crap. There are some exceptions: Arghoslent's - Hornets of the Pogrom crushes all of these college boy death metal homos.

Europe can never touch Vincent era Morbid Angel...

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 30,2008 11:16am
I don't think anyone can say that all European or all American death metal is terrible or great. No one here, myself included, really knows the extent of death metal in either area of the world. For every few terrible bands there has to be one that's great and innovative but also unknown. For all we know, the best Death Metal comes from an agricultural town in interior China. Probably not but you get my point.

toggletoggle post by antny at Apr 30,2008 11:18am
SPAWN OF POSSESSION, ANATA, MARTYR... best Death Metal bands in the world at present. None are American.

toggletoggle post by antny at Apr 30,2008 11:19am
American bands jock the slamtastic riffs waay way way too much. I love me some slam, but there is no denying that so many American bands sound nearly identical.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 30,2008 11:23am
You're only addressing one type of death metal. There are so many other styles and types each with their own unique idiosyncratic musical stylings.

Thought I must agree on Spawn of Possession, not everyone knows every death metal band ever to say that anyone is the best metal band in the world.

toggletoggle post by antny at Apr 30,2008 11:26am
I have my opinions and I really don't care if they're unfair to some shitty bands that play in a boring style of DM I don't like. I check out alot of bands and 95% of them are totally worthless and unoriginal, even bands that get jocked hard by people whose opinions I generally respect. Metal, especially death metal, is in large measure a stagnant genre in which so few bands display any real creativity and talent. There are bands out there that make it worthwhile, but they are few and far between.

toggletoggle post by aril at Apr 30,2008 11:29am
I think American (black and death) Metal is pretty much at a standstill at the moment.

toggletoggle post by Martins   at Apr 30,2008 11:31am
That's exactly what I'm saying. There are a loooooooooooooot of bad bands but there has to be some good music out there. My point is that for every few bad bands there is one that is amazing and unknown. Sure a few make it, but there has to be more unknown ones out there.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Apr 30,2008 1:17pm
anyone who doesn't think there is any quality DM in the world right now needs to stop listening to so much shitty black metal.

I'll go ahead and say that both most BM and DM today though are swimming in lameness.

But to say there is absolutely nothing of quality out there today is just straight up ignorant to explore for anything new.

Inveracity and Benighted are my two favorite DM bands right now. So Europe wins.

Go Europe!

toggletoggle post by corpus_NLI at May 1,2008 3:17pm
inveracity, beheaded, despondency---i could survive off that solely off that shit!!

toggletoggle post by anthony at May 1,2008 3:21pm
Beheaded are so amazing... Ominous Bloodline and Recounts of Disembodiment are fantastic CDs.

toggletoggle post by corpus_NLI at May 1,2008 3:23pm
i sleep with these cd's in my transformers pillowcase hoping that i will absorb their brutality through osmosis.

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at May 1,2008 3:36pm
Demilich (rip) > all other EU DM

toggletoggle post by corpus_NLI at May 1,2008 3:42pm
so hessian, so impressive...

toggletoggle post by Deteriorot at May 1,2008 3:44pm
Inveracity's Influences are mostly american, just like all other band from the US and Europe

Influences
Broken Hope, Cannibal Corpse, Christ Denied, Deeds Of Flesh, Dehumanized, Fleshgrind, (early) Hate Eternal, Malevolent Creation, Monstrosity, Morbid Angel, Pyrexia, Terrorizer, Severe Torture, Slayer, Suffocation, Vile (US)

toggletoggle post by anthony at May 1,2008 3:44pm
I love Demilich, but they are a bit too artsy for me. I feel they sacrifice good songwriting for weirdness to a certain extent. Still they are an amazing band.

Even though they're the gayest band now, Atrocity's Hallucinations and Todessehnsucht are underrated classics for EUDM. Considering Hallucinations was one of the 1st "technical" DM albums, you can tell bands like Cryptopsy got influenced by them.

toggletoggle post by aril at May 1,2008 3:55pm
Luciferion's first release is awesome too.

Probably not, but never forget who paved the fucking way...!!! US might be at a halt when it comes to brutal DM but never count them out. Just to clarify my statement from earlier on, we need more good USDM and less metalcore/grind wannabes...

toggletoggle post by NippleViolater   at May 1,2008 11:52pm
Is the opinion that Cannibal Corpse's "Kill" is one of the best death metal records to come out in years way too mainstream for the real DM fans out there?

That album just kills it in every way.

toggletoggle post by NippleViolater   at May 1,2008 11:52pm
I'm not one of those diehard death metal guys but I've been listening to the good stuff for a while now.

toggletoggle post by blue  at May 2,2008 12:02am
CC always releases solid albums.

theres so much more out there though.

toggletoggle post by NippleViolater   at May 2,2008 12:06am
Yea but I think Kill is the best recording they've ever had. I love it!
