returntothepit >> discuss >> QUERY: What does it mean to you when someone says "I listen to everything" by xmikex on Apr 28,2008 1:35pm

It kind of bothers me when I hear people say "I listen to everything" when people ask them what kind of music they're into. I mean, the type of music you're into isn't everything about you, but it's got to say something about you. To me I feel like someone saying "I listen to everything" is a cop out for them being content not to have a discernible personality. Like there's no difference between a Mozart symphony and radio in between frequencies to these people. That just doesn't sit right with me.

People also used to say "I listen to everything except country music." But you don't hear that anymore ever since Toby Keith became a staple for the status quo of Generation Dudeguy.

Thoughts?

I think Hank III has more to do with country music becoming acceptable.

It means they want to have sex with you.

I usually say "I listen to a lot of different types of stuff" Because I do. Then I will list a few examples. I can't stand when generic college girl xyz says "Oh I like everything!" No you don't, shut up.

"Everything" usually means that they have 4 presets on their car radio.
1. 94.5
2. Kiss 108
3. WBCN
4. 94.5

It always kind of baffles me when people with exceptionally generic tastes in music go out and buy mp3 players. If they bought a AM/FM walkman at a thrift shop for $10 they'd hear the exact same songs. If they watched TV for 5 minutes, and waited for a Circuit City, and a Levis commercial to come on they'd hear half their playlist.

You just came from the South, you don't even know what words are. You're typing with your toes so your hands are free to chug moonshine.

whenever someone tells me they listen to everything (which means whatever's on mtv or 94.5, plus dave matthews band and sublime), i ask them a random question, like "what's your favorite 70s prog band?" or "what black metal bands do you listen to?" or "got any good jazz-fusion you could burn for me?" or "i've been looking for this gay porn soundtrack for a long time. you listen to everything. do you think you might have it? you probably do."

It's usually "everything except country[AND/OR]rap", in my experience. And, yes, it automatically means they have brain AIDS and should be weeded out of the gene pool. IT'S SCIENCE.

I'm actually quite open to all forms of music; although I'm not too into any new hip hop crap. I do respect old school rap, especially from the 80s/early 90s.
There really is no type of music I don't hate, I view it all as art (that is, except new-age hiphop crap. I just don't get it. They should just call it Urban Ghetto Poetry nowadays).
I used to experiment writing all kinds of music in the 90s because I believed at some point in my life, it would be useful to have many influences.

Let's face it. Music is pretty much dead. It seems just about everything has been done. I really dig avantgarde shit too, but sometimes it just seems people try too hard to express themselves musically.

toggletoggle post by aril at Apr 28,2008 3:43pm
That being said. Metal pwns all forms of music.

toggletoggle post by dr. sphincto at Apr 28,2008 3:51pm
i hate it when people say everything, most of that music is pop forms of music you hear on the radio

When ppl ask me what type of music i listen to, i get into detail.
I listen to most forms of metal, hardcore, punk, classic rock, ska, grindcore, industrial, darkwave, ebm, psychobilly and others

i know my music I AM AN ELITIST

everything is sinusodal. things dont actually die in this perpetual flux of 'being and non-being...'

to say music is dead because it's all been done before is CUTE but stupid. i mean wouldn't literature, language, style, your post, etc, etc, even LIFE it self be "dead?" hasn't 'everything' already been done before along-long time ago?

drunk rant..

Yeah in my experience when people say they listen to everything it usually means that they don't have any knowledge of the genres we listen to existing or that they listen to a wide variety of mainstream music.

toggletoggle post by blue  at Apr 28,2008 4:09pm
when i hear someone say 'i listen to everything,' i automatically assume they listen to the worst/most commercial parts of every genre available.

CORPUS: agreed. Music itself cannot die.. but what I was trying to get at is that to be innovative in any genre now is extremely hard.

here's a question to ponder:
25 years from now, what do you think people will be listening to? will today's music still be popular? will techno/electronic eventually take over? where the hell will Metal be 25 years from now?

toggletoggle post by fuck logging in at Apr 28,2008 4:41pm
I listen to bith Mozart symphonies and radio in between frequencies.

toggletoggle post by Y_Ddraig_Goch  at Apr 28,2008 4:43pm
when they say everything they mean nothing, because the music they listen to is so artless it is no longer music

I listen to a lot of stuff and prefer to say "multiple genres, mainly metal, classic rock, progressive, world music, some classical."

People who say they "listen to everything" are either:

A. Fucking pussies who don't have the balls to form an opinion.
B. Tone-deaf retards who do in fact listen to everything -- except that all they are hearing is droning nonsense in the background regardless of what is being played.
