toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Jul 7,2008 4:42pm
I was on the fence about it too, but I've been waiting to see At The Gates for probably 12 years or so. $28 plus a $4.50 service charge sucks, but I'd much rather spend the money than miss out, even if they decide to tour again. Plus I finally got paid by a few clients so I actually have a few extra bucks to spare.

I saw the show last night in NYC. At the Gates was ridiculous. They closed with Need, which was kinda weird. Not really a great song to close with, in my opinion, but whatevs. Darkest Hour wasn't too shabby. Municipal Waste definitely brought their own crowd, but weren't too bad either. Great set list from ATG.

no not sold out. I misunderstood robin

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 11,2008 8:42pm
walking down to the crowd seemed a little empty. I thing they are expecting 1300ish so not sold out...

toxic holocaust: again seeing them without tons of stage diving is kind of lame, but the audience kept up the juice, circle pitting and fist pumping like crazy. After they played war is hell, there was a lot more crowd surfing.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jul 11,2008 10:12pm
municipal waste: how odd is it seeing these guys on stage with a barricade? The kids that did make it over the barricade, they were pushed back into the crowd. For the one kid that made it on stage, he was tossed out after stage diving. robing tested out their mics too. they played an excel cover that I don't remember. off split image. but they kept talking about schrooms. this wasn't as "balls out" as they usually play, but they were still tripping from last night. upstairs would have killed with them tonight.

one of the best shows i've been too in a long time.
darkest hour was a disapointment to me... if all songs were like the sadist nation it would have been different...
municipal waste... shit they are good.
at the gate wow!

Oh my god was this awesome. Well, ATG themselves. Toxic Holocaust was alright (Better on CD as someone else said...and the drummer sucks), Municipal Waste was worse than I remember, and Darkest Hour predictably blow goats for quarters as always.

Seriously, the Waste has a serious identity crisis going on. The vocalist wants to be Mike Muir, the bassist wants to be Frank Bello, and they steal Megadeth song titles and artwork. I understand that's part of the whole bit, but it's tiring. And they got fucking sloppy on the faster beats.

I'm still psyched ATG played All Life Ends. A lot of the leads were kinda buried in the mix. But that's the ONLY thing I could complain about.

toggletoggle post by kevinthesprigg at Jul 12,2008 2:18am
That was SO FUCKING GOOD!

toggletoggle post by theaccurseddrummer  at Jul 12,2008 2:43am edited Jul 12,2008 2:44am
Holy shit. At the fucking Gates. That's all you need to say.

Seriously? I forgot who else played. They don't even matter.

At the Gates, best band I've ever seen at The Palladium.

BTW, Pam and Jon DID go, and they left a few songs from the end when she started having contractions. They went to the hospital and are going home because she's not quite ready, but she's definitely in the earlier stages of labor. At the Gates + new nephew = AWESOME weekend.

toggletoggle post by darkenedsoul   at Jul 12,2008 8:29am
That was a killer show from ATG. Overall sound I thought was very good. Only thing I'd have liked would have been a bit more ummph in the kick drums as they were on the light side sound-wise. But that was fucking amazing to see them.

toggletoggle post by metalguy at Jul 12,2008 8:38am
yea, the drummer for municipal waste sucked... on the fast beats he was losing it and just hitting the hi hat... shouldn't he be more rehearsed? hasn't he been touring for a while?

toggletoggle post by pam   at Jul 12,2008 8:59am
Apparently At The Gates was only capable on inducing FALSE labor. I could have stayed until the end. Gay.

Totally worth it though. Save for missing the last few songs, best.show.ever.

I believe this show holds my new record for most times hit in the face. What a fucking killer concert. Need and Blinded by Fear were my favs but everything sounded tiiiight.

Good to see a healthy supply of RTTPers in attendance. Also got the chance to meet IRL the infamous Granny Monster and Alexc. Great time all around.

sucks that i wasn't able to make this. the bedfid show was pretty good though.

toggletoggle post by BSV at Jul 13,2008 2:16am
the show was pretty awesome. lots of people there. plenty of good friends.
toxic holocaust was great, sounded killer. crazy seeing them play for 30 people in pvd to go to downstairs palladium. i encouraged a tie died grateful dead wearing hippy to move the fuck out of the way since he wasn't headbanging. headbanging is the law when you are up front. if you're not doing it, don't be there. same goes for all those faggots with long hair who still havn't figured out how to headbang - get out of metal.
municipal waste was meh. sloppy and boring on a big stage-but yeah, luckily it's fun watching fans go nuts, sweet circle pit!
darkest hour. what was up with those soap boxes with knock off metallica lil dudes carved into them? that was weird. i felt bad for them, following up against two bands that have really paved a way for fashion to out a way of actually being credibility. those lights made me not look at the stage and kinda hid the fact that they suck at rocking out, clearly they havn't seen enough KISS or Judas Priest footage.
At The Gates was exceptional. Very strong set. Other than them not being young and not having the energy of the past, they were terrific. Yes, the leads were lost in the mix but overall it was satisfactory. Great range of material. Woulda loved to hear Like An Ever Opening Flower though. OH WELL! Windows...Kingdom Gone...All Life Ends...THANK YOU AT THE GATES. Quite obvious that more than half the crowd still doesn't have the early albums since SOS material was definately the favorite.

toggletoggle post by anal froth at Jul 13,2008 4:55am
the S.O.S. had better have been the favorite coz that's the best stuff they ever did by far.
Burning Darkness? please. good stuff but not even on the same level.

and who gives a shit if people aren't headbanging or aren't headbanging "properly?" They paid to get in.

Maybe the next show that you go to you should just not even pay attention to the band playing and instead just monitor the crowd and make sure that no one is headbanging the wrong way or (GOD FORBID!) not headbanging at all. I know it may be tempting just to say "the hell with everyone else" and watch the band that's on stage that you came to see, but this is important stuff. If you don't police the crowd on the proper etiquette, who will?

SOS was such a dominant, influential, important album...naturally they'd play the most from it. Think of what that fucking CD did for metal. All the bands it influenced, the people it brought to metal. Crazy. It's 13 years old and it's STILL doing that.

Hearing Under A Serpent Sun live was something I've been waiting for for over 10 years, and it was a-fucking-mazing. If I wasn't so preoccupied timing contractions, I probably would had cried a little.

I will never forget the look on Brendan's face (of St.Jude) when they played that song. Like he was forgiven of all sins, then proceeded to annihilate about 50 people rushing to the front to sing along. So many good memories of that night. One of those nights you realize how special it will be for years to come. Did this show turn me into a hippy?

Being crammed against tons of people with minimal amounts oxygen at the barrier was worth seeing ATG. They played extremly well but the sound could have been better. I agree that the leads and melodies got a bit obscured.
