see, I think it's the fact that after my older brother exposed me to Kiss and The Beatles at a very young age, then we both progressed by listening to Dr. Demento's radio show religiously, that planted a quirky seed (apart from hearing Venom for the first time in '85, a fucking revelation, but my brother didn't get it)

I just got a Captain Beefheart best of from the library, but does anyone else have any fucked up shit they can refer me to? Necro lounge singers, xylophone blastmort, Striborg-y religious music, stupid symphonies, rediculoid drek.

I know you have some fucked up shit. The more unpublished the better (but I WILL wanna trade CD-R shit. Step up to the plate).

thank you and fuck you.

what about plunderhonics or the eerie bizarre comp?

toggletoggle post by GodlessRob at Feb 29,2008 7:19am
zappa, zorn, mr. bungle, fantomas, nick cave
just to name some of my fave quirky, weird, eccentric, insanity, but utter genius type stuff

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 29,2008 8:37am
zorn's naked city is excellent.
I would never call nick cage any of those things.
the new CD is pretty terrible too.. made me sad

Weird Little Boy. It's Mike Patton, John Zorn and I believe Trey Spruance from Mr. Bungle.

99% of this shit they can't sell cause it's all samples.

Diamanda Galas?

her album devoted to animal torture is pretty cool. the song where she just says "cunt" over and over is to notch hilarity.

- Albert Ayler: awesome avant-garde jazz saxophonist...once describing himself he said, "If 'Trane was the father and Pharoah was the son, then I was the Holy Ghost." fucking crazy ass shit.

- Art Ensemble of Chicago - more avant-garde jazz. every instrument imaginable played.

- Oxbow: not that obscure but yeah, weird.

- Also not obscure but nevertheless sweet are Sonic Youth's self-released EPs, SYR 1-3 (Anagrama, Slaapkamers Met Slagroom, and Invito Al Cielo), all feedback-heavy explorations that Geffen would never agree to release. the 4th SYR release is worth checking out as well. 2 discs of them covering everyone from John Cage to Yoko Ono. very weird indeed.

- that reminds me also to suggest John Cage. a truly genius composer...years before the invention of the synthesizer, he was in the forefront in the exploration of electric and electronic sound sources, using oscillators, turntables, and amplification to musical ends. He pioneered the use of graphic notation and, in employing chance operations to determine musical parameters, was the leading light for the classical avant-garde of the 20th century.

- lastly, just watch this guy and write down some of the names he mentions

Jeffrey Lewis - The Complete History of Punk Rock and Its Development on the Lower East Side (1950-1975)

There's a Russian band called Rakoth that's pretty weird. They have an album called Jabberworks (something like that - can't remember, it's been a while) that's really interesting avantgarde BM.

weirdest thing ive gotten lately is benighted leams, ferly centsms (yes thats how its spelled) weird ass drum machine bm, with really intricate structures, sounds random as hell at first but after a few listens you "get it"
also if you like weirdness, check out some cyber/gore/grind like gynophagia, SMES (dude from LDOH's solo thing), the secret life, cyborgasm, etc.

Threnody to the Victims of Hiroshima is one of the absolute best songs

The Dream of Jacob off that CD is also supreme. Kubrick used part of it in "The Shining"

I'd call this experimental only because Lars, and Hammett were busy experimenting with their sexuality when they wrote it.
