Why would anyone claiming to like Black Metal bash on Norway? If it weren't for bands who forged the genre like Darkthrone, Burzum, and Emperor, you'd fail to have this style of metal.

Wrong. I do agree those bands have had an impact, though on a more surface skimming scale where bands can only think to rip THOSE bands off. But while all of those Norway guys were in their death metal days (Darkthrone demos and "Soulside Journey", Burzum (Varg) was in Old Funeral, Emperor was a band called Thou Shalt Suffer, Immortal was called Amputation, etc. etc.), there was already real black metal bands from all over the world. Most notably Bathory, Hellhammer, Sarcofago, Vulcano, Necrovore, etc. and were all bands that influenced the aforementioned Norway bands to go in a more black metal direction. I am not bashing Norway at all, as I think some of the most innovative shit came from Norway like Mayhem, Ved Buens Ende, Mysticum, Manes, Ulver, etc.

their biggest mistake was who they did that split with.

People will always debate on whether or not bands like Bathory, Hellhammer/Celtic Frost, etc, were full fledged Black Metal bands, or Thrash whom developed the blueprint for the aforementioned genre. I know I watched interviews where Tom G. Warrior mentions BM, during CF's To Mega Therion era. Bathory certainly had an undeniable impact on Norwegian BM, especially The Return of Darkness and Evil. Burzum's song "War" is total Bathory worship. However, with all proto-bands, like Sabbath influencing Doom; are they actual Doom? Sabbath didn't coin the term and the aesthetics evolved into something drastically different; many sub-styles, etc. Venom coined the term Black Metal, and they were clearly influenced by punk and Motorhead, and had songs about partying and women from time to time. I don't really analyze the genres in this manner like I used to. People have many different opinions on the origins and what constitutes real [enter style here] metal. As far as aesthetics go, most modern BM owes a great debt to the Norwegian scene, which is what I was originally trying to state.
