Warning, some plot spoilers.

Anyone see the korean movie, the host?

I like cloverfield a lot, but JJ Abrams was quoted as saying "this is completely original, you have never seen it before."

the host: a creature emerges from the river, attacks people, carries a disease, military orders evacuation, but a group of people go into the danger zone to look for their missing family member

cloverfield: creature emerges from the river, attacks people, drops smaller things that carry a disease, a group of people go in search of their friend after escaping the quarantine...

even the monster looked pretty similar

both excellent movies, but cloverfield was definitely far too similar to the host

I'm sure that's not the only movie that bares a resemblance. It's just a typical monster movie like Godzilla, the thing that he was referring to about it being original was probably due to the hand camera.

The Host is by far superior and definitely influenced Abrams. I think he was mainly referring to the first-person, seemingly one-take production, which also isn't original at all. It's just Abrams hyping himself up again.

they're making part duex to the host.

did you catch the preview for dynamite warrior at the beginning of the host on the dvd?

I didn't see the trailer, but I saw Dynamite Warrior over the summer. It was ok but nowhere close to Tony Ja's stuff. Worth checking out.

I've heard about the prequel, but I'm not too sure about how that is going to work out since the origins of the monster were laid out pretty clearly in the first one and were based on actual events. If they change that they are going to have to take all of the political undertones out. I've also heard of a Hollywood remake in the works, which would be a huge bummer.

THE HOST was a terrible movie, not nearly as good as cloverfield.

I still have no idea what the appeal of Cloverfield is. Bad acting, total crap gimmick marketing (at which Abrams has become an evil genius), and nothing to live up to the hype. From a technical standpoint it's kind of impressive, but that's only in the cinematography and editing. The handheld camera thing was run into the ground with verite and dogme, and we definitely don't need people doing it with shitty quality.

It's good at having a badass monster destroying the shit out of everything, but it just seemed like a million dollar youtube video.

the whole thing in the host is about the pollution in asian rivers, it's terrible, so I figured it was a mutant creature of some sort...didn't get why they lied about the virus.

toggletoggle post by voidexpression  at Jan 20,2008 2:31am
The mutation was due to a U.S. base dumping a huge amount of formaldehyde into the sewer (which actually happened a few years back). The government lied about the virus to create more of a panic, enforce the quarantine, and try to avoid the blame.

How did the Cloverfield monster come from the river. It was just there.

i haven't seen cloverfield, so i can't really judge, but what is so great about this abrams fella? i looked at his credentials, and i don't really see any amazing or groundbreaking work on his resume. he seems like any other hollywood bigshot, yet everyone goes dick ass crazy for him.
