Those songs on the re-issue weren't even Cynic songs...they were Portal songs. granted, Portal was essentially Cynic with a chick singer, but they were going for a totally different vibe

The Portal shit doesn't suck. I love that CD and listen to it all the time.

Sean Reinert is a sick drummer, though I'm not the biggest fan of Portal (miami) or Aghora. I thought the cyber vocals on Focus were aesthetically well placed. Focus is a classic a long side Atheist - Unquestionable Presence / Elements and Pestilence - Spheres.

Cynic is great, but like BornSoVile said, I'd rather listen to Atheist! Can't beat the song Mother Man.

I too prefer Atheist. And I'll take the Cynic demoes over Focus.

Cynic's demo tapes from '90 and '91 (I believe those are the correct years, can't remember) are actually really good, despite the production. That's my favorite Cynic.

Also, re: the Atheist v. Cynic comparisons - I don't even really think that's relevant. Cynic approached jazzfusion/metal in suuuuuuuch a different way than Atheist that I don't even see the point in comparing them. Cynic is a completely different listening experience than Atheist.

Yeah, Cynic is for pompous jazz cunts who think they can play metal cause they know how to wank. Athiest is for metal heads with heart.
