at least he is working on it. hopefully the director spends most of the time saying "uh, Pete, you want to take over". i can't wait to see what they do with Smaug.

AHHHH this will be better than LotR. I would love to see a Smith of Wootton Major adaptation adaptation too.

toggletoggle post by thuringwethil at Dec 18,2007 3:55pm
the original Gollum from the cartoon is still my favorite. More froggy and a more threatening voice.

toggletoggle post by aril at Dec 18,2007 4:00pm
awesome.
I'm just curious how they're going to make it into 2 movies. I mean, it's a pretty short book.
I can't wait to see all the dwarves.

I think there is more action and things going on in the hobbit then in all of the lord of the rings books

Fair enough. The cartoon adaptation managed to make a feature-length out of the book, and still left plenty of stuff out - I don't see why they couldn't make two if they left everything in. (Although it'll break my heart to see The Hobbit without that "The greeeeeeeeateeeeeest adventuuuuuuuure" song.)

I enjoyed the Hobbit more than LotR. More entertaining.

Did anyone read Tolkien's (son's..) new book? I bought it the day it came out but have yet to crack it open.

In unrelated news, here's an extremely hot picture of the Baroness:

thats not Chris Tolkiens new book; that's wicked old...

It's called Children of Huron and it's good but slow at times much like the Silmarilion.

I'm disappointed we're not talking about how hot Lisa Loeb Baroness is.

toggletoggle post by Dankill at Dec 18,2007 6:17pm
Lisa Loeb didn't pop into my head when I looked at that picture.
Now, I can't help but see it.
And that IS a great drawing.

Gotta love a mousy-but-hot librarian goth with a leather catsuit and lots of guns.

Ian McKellen better play Gandalf or I'm going to be very upset

I very much look forward to seeing this movie - The Hobbit is my favorite book and there are so many scenes I think could be brought to life so well with a movie: the three trolls, Bilbo & Gollum's "Riddles in the Dark", the whole journey through Mirkwood forest, the defeat of Smaug, and the Battle of 5 Armies at the end....
I absolutely loved the LOTR movies, I hope they make The Hobbit equally amazing.

Yes. Have you read The Smith of Wootton Major?

I had a "Tolkien Reader" that was composed mainly of stories that influenced him and like 2 things he wrote. It was pretty great.

toggletoggle post by NuclearWinter at Dec 19,2007 1:22am
Best work Tolkien ever authored was "The Adventures of Tom Bombadil."

toggletoggle post by boine at Dec 19,2007 1:39am
the best thing he authored was the Silmarillion it was a crazy tale

toggletoggle post by Yeti at Dec 19,2007 10:35am

I'd feel better if Jackson were directing this, but I can think of very few ways that someone could fuck up The Hobbit.

I demand a 9 hour Silmarilion epic movie.

It'd be a massive commercial flop, and completely unintelligible to the casual viewer. I'd buy 3 copies.

When I was like a junior in high school I had this dream that Emperor (this is before all their crappy albums came out) made this totally epic movie based off the beginning of the Silmarillion. The character based off Melkor was a woman, and looked like the broad from the inside of the Cradle of Filth "Cruelty and the Beast" cd. There were firestorms, and these huge landscapes of ice. It was the most absurdly epic dream I've ever had. Imagine my disappointment when a year later this movie had never been made, and Emperor released IX Equilibrium.

toggletoggle post by NEVERPURIFIED NLI at Dec 19,2007 11:21am
IX Equilibrium is amazing, and you're dumb for not thinking so

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Dec 19,2007 11:23am
On it's own it's a decent album. But following Anthems, and Nightside Eclipse... come on. Seriously, come on.

They did kind of jump the shark with that one. I like it all the same, but it's kind of a disappointing direction for them to take when you're expecting a followup to Anthems. I actually like Prometheus way better.

IX is better than Anthems. I don't know why everyone jocks that album so hard, it's not that great IMO. The production fucking sucks.

Hordane's Land > In The Nightside Eclipse > IX Eqilibrium > Wrath of the Tyrant > Anthems > Prometheus

Prometheus is definitely the worst.

ok back to the matter at hand, The Hobbit will rule.

Now there's a worthwhile critique. The production on Anthems sucks, but not Wrath of the Tyrant and Nightside Eclipse? Gotta be kidding. I thought black metal was supposed to have shitty production anyways?

I do agree though that Nightside Eclipse, and the Enslaved split might be better than Anthems.

Way to try to sound like you know what I'm talking about douchewrangler.

The production on those records is far superior (although obviously much more poorly recorded and mastered) than Anthems. That has to do with the way Anthems was mixed. Anthems has a pervasiveness of synth and an emptiness of guitar tone that I utterly despise and gives me a headache if I listen more than a few songs at a time.

Anthems rules your soul.

We obviously we disagree on what "production" includes. And what exactly it means to wrangle a douche.

According to the British newspaper The Guardian, the announcement was made at the French premiere of the del Toro-produced thriller The Orphanage. "Today is a big day because we are announcing what everyone wanted to hear, which is that he will be directing The Hobbit," the host reportedly told the audience as he introduced del Toro.

del torro is on his way to becoming god

he wants to do a harry potter movie, hellboy 2 is going to be gold, he is making another civil war esque movie, and at the mountains of madness

I hope the hobbit doesn't push back at the mountains of madness, I iwll be pissed

Where as I usually don't supports Hollywood's desire to lay claim on every other form of art, I must say, I think The Hobbit is a story much more fit for a really big and goofy movie.
