This spring! Wish it was DT in the support slot but this is sufficient.

I'll most likely go to this show, as I'm both a huge DT fan and a huge Opeth fan

I understand how PPT can be an acquired taste for metal heads. Their songs are very "poppy" but I think songs are also very well written and really enjoy Wilson's lead style.

I think it was on some demo collection they put out. My friend Scott had it on his computer. I should have looked at the actual CD to see if there was any liner notes on the Neu cover.

This will be the most unbearable crowd EVER.

Seeing Opeth twice on the Porcupine Tree tour a few years back, I wanted to projectile-fucking-VOMIT on account of the douche chills afforded me by the crowd. As a birthday treat, my girlfriend took me to Philly for the weekend and I was legitimately EMBARRASSED by the bath-house atmosphere. When some lovelorn basement-dwelling career-virgin behind me bellowed "I love you, Michael" for the third time, I almost fucking lost it.

I can't conceive of another band that I enjoy so much and whose fanbase I fucking loathe with greater intensity.

hahaha so true. that happened at the Emperor show this year. this fucking nasty broad behind me kept screaming "I LOVE YOU IHSAHN" and after every fucking song she would yell "PLAY SWORN!!!" this isn't a happy go lucky radio show you fucking cunt, show some fucking respect. you don't tell them what to play, you listen to what they want to play and you fucking love it. this show should prove similar.

My boss is going to shit himself when he hears about this tour. Dream Theater is his favorite band ever; he's got the Dream Theater logo on his checks and on the back of all of his vehicles, even work vehicles, and has a fucking Dream Theater members only jacket. Those are only made for the band and their roadies and techs, haha. I turned him onto Opeth a few years ago, and they are now his 2nd favorite band. His birthday is tomorrow, so I'll surprise him with this news tomorrow.

BUUUUUUUUMP. DREAM THEATER/OPETH/BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME/3 TOUR!

DREAM THEATER’S “PROGRESSIVE NATION” featuring OPETH, 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME to embark on inaugural tour of North America throughout April & May 2008.

New York progressive metal pioneers DREAM THEATER are set to unveil their maiden voyage of “PROGRESSIVE NATION”. A package tour they will headline that will also feature the talents of OPETH, 3 and BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME.

The tour is the brainchild of DREAM THEATER drummer Mike Portnoy who explains: “I’ve been wanting to assemble a package tour like this for many years now. With all of the festivals and package tours that go through America, I’ve been talking with our manager and agent for over 10 years now about doing something that focuses on the more progressive, musician-oriented side of hard rock and metal. I decided it was time to stop talking the talk, lace up and finally walk the walk”

While DREAM THEATER co-headlined 2005’s GIGANTOUR along side MEGADETH, as well as embarking on previous co-headlining runs with both QUEENSRYCHE and JOE SATRIANI, they have primarily built their 22 year career on the road playing solely to their own audience. Portnoy comments: “I’ve always prided myself on personally hand picking new and exciting opening acts for DREAM THEATER in the past. Bands such as PORCUPINE TREE, SYMPHONY X, SPOCK’S BEARD, FATES WARNING, PAIN OF SALVATION and KING’S X. In all of these cases, it was important for me to pick bands that I admire and respect but also ones that I know our fans will enjoy. And I think playing with DT has helped expand all of those band’s fanbases as a direct result. I am hoping PROGRESSIVE NATION will continue to do the same thing in offering an audience for more daring and experimental acts that otherwise may not get the mainstream exposure they so rightly deserve.”

Joining the bill for this inaugural run is Sweden’s legendary OPETH who have been enjoying an ever-growing and expanding audience of their own for many years now. DT’s Roadrunner Records label-mates will be ready to unleash their new album come next spring and PROGRESSIVE NATION should be a great launching pad for their next World Tour cycle. Guitarist/Vocalist Mikael Akerfeldt adds:
"We're very excited about this upcoming tour with DREAM THEATER. It will be the first tour that we're doing in support of our upcoming record, and also somewhat of a dream come true personally as I've been a fan of theirs for a long time. It's quite intimidating to be on the bill with such amazing musicians but obviously we'll try and give them a run for their money and pull out a few nice licks of our own. I guess we'll need to practice a little bit for this....how boring! Yet, I can't wait for this tour to start and I'm sure we'll have a blast with the DT guys as well as together with the other bands on the bill!"

Also on the bill with their unique blend of pop, funk and hard rock is upstate New York’s 3 who issued the following statement: "3 is very pleased to announce its participation in the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour. For well over a decade DREAM THEATER has been the vanguard of progressive rock and we are completely psyched to flex with these heavyweights, playing much of our new record "The End is Begun". This package will rock and awe fans everywhere as one of the most important tours of the year. It's a progressive way of music, a progressive way of life....welcome to the PROGRESSIVE NATION tour.”

North Carolina’s BETWEEN THE BURIED AND ME are enjoying rave reviews and critical acclaim for their latest CD “Colors” and are looking forward to sharing the stage each night with both DREAM THEATER and OPETH. Vocalist/Keyboardist Tommy Rogers comments: "We are very excited to be touring with two bands that have been such an integral part of our musical upbringing. It is a wonderful opportunity to have our music heard by new ears."

DREAM THEATER are currently in the middle of their “Chaos In Motion” World Tour which has already traveled extensively throughout Europe and North America in support of their latest Roadrunner Records CD “Systematic Chaos”. The World Tour will continue throughout 2008 hitting Asia, Australia and South America before concluding with PROGRESSIVE NATION returning to North America in April/May 2008.

Portnoy hopes that this first venture of PROGRESSIVE NATION will prove to be a success that can enable himself and DREAM THEATER to continue the package into future years and begin a tradition that musicians and fans alike can count on for quality musicianship and artistic integrity on future tours.

Agreed, there shouldn't be any openers just three bands playing extra long sets. Last time I saw Opeth was a 20 minute set and that's like 2 Opeth songs.

I used to love Dream Theater, but I haven't listened to them in years.

I tried a few months ago, but it is just godawful. Portnoy is a joke, and LaBrie's singing is most often shitty than not.

I kinda got heavy into DT and Symphony X around the same time, and personally Symphony X is just so much better (especially drum-wise), except lyrically, where they both are terrible.

toggletoggle post by The_Moor_NLI at May 21,2008 2:41am
Well, for not playing anything off of Still Life or any albums before it, and only playing 6 songs, I was really pleased with the set choice-my fav. tracks off the albums they did play. DT was boring, and BTBAM (go on, hate) was amazing. I love colors and they chose the two best tracks off of there. 3 played a great set too.

Axenrot and Akeson both fucked some shit up, but I was too busy flipping out in my chair to care.

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at May 21,2008 8:24am
It was cool that Opeth played the song "Heir Apparent", since it's the only sick track on the new album. I got there late and missed Master's Apprentices which I'm still pissed about. The Orpheum is gay, why would a co-headliner go on as early as 7:45 especially when there are two bands before them? As usual Opeth sounded tighter than a gnat's anus, but nothing from the first 4 albums, and to close the set with the Drapery Falls? Such a half-assed song for them; they could have at least done Bleak. It was great to attend a metal show where it's a bunch of kids getting chaperoned by their parents... So lame.

toggletoggle post by Yeti at May 21,2008 8:28am
i am glad i didn't pay 50 bucks for an Opeth set devoid of anything from the first 4 albums.

toggletoggle post by mikeofdecrepitude at May 21,2008 8:35am
Yeah, if I had payed for this show, I'd be even more pissed off. 50 dollars is a ridiculous price for a show, but I would probably pay that if they did a set consisting of only early material. They played a track off Damnation, when they could have used that time to play a classic like Advent, When, or Moonlapse Vertigo.

toggletoggle post by ZenErik   at May 21,2008 8:41am
Axe messed up a lot of double bass or it wasn't triggering properly. Was he using triggers? There were a lot of random missing hits in the fast double bass parts. I didn't even see him playing because my view was obstructed.

toggletoggle post by BrianDBB  at May 21,2008 9:23am
HAHAHAHA Dream Theater boring last night? Right... what about Opeth! Hey I like Opeth, but they're not exactly Excitement the Band live. Dream Theater definitely had a great setlist to me, but I like their entire discography so that doesn't count. Regardless, it was a goooood show.

toggletoggle post by The_Moor_NLI at May 21,2008 11:03am
If you're going to have a five minute solo, make it count. That shit just gets boring after a while because it's not interestingly written, it's just noodling. Too much of their shit is masturbatory.

def a fun show. i love the sound at the Orpheum. New Opeth song KILLED. I gotta say though i'm not feelin the Marshall amp that the new guitarist uses - sounded way to out of place for the clean parts. Overall i give the show a B-

i was pretty suprised with BTBAM, never really listened to them too much but they were actually pretty cool. Opeth was still awesome regardless of their setlist. Dream theater was alright, i'm not particularly into them but i was impressed. I just wish opeth could have played longer.

I had a good time at this show, 3 was good, btbam played well. Opeth, which i was actually looking forward to seeing, was terrible. I was so bored, plus the whole "death metal" 'dont hate us" speach was so fucking lame. Plus their discrption of death metal wasnt even them. Fast drumming?? Yea double bass maybe. Dont get me wrong i like opeth but they are totally not a live band, plus they have way better songs than they played. Dream theater was as always in my opinion awsome to see.

dream theatre blows. Nothing can bore me faster than them. Wait I take that back, Marks Rock club is still open right?

best time I saw opeth was when they did the acoustic set with Porcupine Tree. wait, sometime before that when they played stuff off of Orchid and Morningrise. can't remember when that was.
