Bioshock came out today. The little fag at gamestop wouldn't let me buy one of the limeted editions with the included Big Daddy action figure, so I was a little sad.

I'm installing it now, Then I'm probably gonna disappear for a few days. This game looks awesome.

WARNING!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If you have been looking forward to this game, like I have, and intend to play it do NOT go to the bioshock forums, or any other game forums for that matter. A bunch of assholes that got the game early (a couple vendors broke street date accidentally a week ago) and already beat it have been posting crazy spoilers all over the place. I already ruined a couple big things for myself when I went to Cult of Rapture to see if there was a PC version of the LE.

This looks really cool. I think it's time to justify a RAM upgrade to my girlfriend.

Yeah, no thanks. What that thing costs, I can spend in ten years on upgrades and stay current - if not ahead of the curve - with whatever console darling is hot nowadays. Not that I don't enjoy a good sit-down and ass-kick in front of the TV, but PC is where it's at.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 11:12am
I agree about PC being where it's at, but with all these games coming out exclusive for x-box I'm starting to worry that I'm in the wrong corner.

Especially since I'm still trying to upgrade my drivers to actually play this damned game.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Aug 21,2007 11:16am edited Aug 21,2007 11:16am
The company that did this also did Freedom Force (and the even-better sequel Freedom Force vs. the Third Reich) - hands-down the best silver age comic action RPGs around. (More than likely the only ones, as far as I know, but still. Amazing games.)

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 11:17am
They also made "System Shock 2"

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 11:27am
Okay, drivers installed, and just got through the setup and intro. The game looks great, but I didn't notice an AA option, and it seems like it could really use it.

Maybe people with the new DX10 cards will see improvements.

If you need a twelve-step program to stop drinking long enough to play this game, maybe you should rethink your priorities.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Aug 21,2007 11:46am
I've been waiting for this game for a while. And it was one of the reasons I got the new PC. I don't think I'll be able to play it for a week or two though till after NooseBomb gets back from our trip. HL2 and Portal comes out in a month or so too! woo!

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 12:00pm
I have no idea what portal is, but HL-2 is looking pretty good.

Bioshock so far is awesome. The graphics are sweet, the sfx are really really cool, but the biggest turn on so far is how completely unique the gameplay/concept is.

The atmosphere is pretty well done too. In the very beginning of the game there's some shit happening around you that creates an awesome sense of panic. I found myself running like crazy for no reason. Also, instead of typical creepy monsters jumping out at you the enemies are pretty human, and you always hear/see them coming. However, they make it even creepier than the typical jump out and scare you approach. The people in Rapture are completely fucking nuts, and some of the shit they say to themselves or each other as you're approaching makes you think twice about going around that corner.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 12:01pm
Also, the story so far is pretty neat. I'm probably going to re-start from the beginning tonight when my GF gets home, because it's definitely the kind of game that's actually fun just to watch someone playing.

toggletoggle post by SinisterMinister at Aug 21,2007 12:03pm
A guy that I used to go to high school with came into my work the other day, when I asked him what he's been up to he told me he's been developing games. He then let me know the game he had just finished up on was Bioshock. Pretty sweet, this game lookms fucking awesome.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 12:05pm
Yeah, 2k that developed this game is based out of Boston. Tell your friend he did a damned good job with this game. I'm like 15 minutes in, and I already see a million ways I'd want to re-play this shit.

toggletoggle post by SinisterMinister at Aug 21,2007 12:06pm
He told me that every difficulty is like playing a different game.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 12:07pm
I love these enemies. Imagine a creepy mutant from Doom 3 or something, but instead of "hiss, arggh, yarr, hiss, slurp, gurgle", the mutant instead starts TALKING to you while at the same time trying to fucking kill you. "I'm not a monster. You're a monster. You can't stop me. Get away from me. I'll kill you!"

SinisterMinister said:

I've started with the normal difficulty. When you first start, it offers three choices:

Easy: I've never played a shooter before
Normal: I've played SOME shooters
Hard: I've played a LOT of shooters

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Aug 21,2007 12:11pm
I play a lot of shooters but I'm having a real hard time trying to not suck at ET:QW.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Aug 21,2007 12:15pm
I must say it WAS fun playing doom3 on the nightmare setting though. Every time you get a health pack it will automatically run your health down to like 20. The only advantage you get with the nightmare setting is that you get use of the soulcube through the whole game and not just at the end.

toggletoggle post by DestroyYouAlot  at Aug 21,2007 12:23pm
Ugh. I'm still trying to slog through Doom 3 on "just above regular-ass" setting. I get distracted easily, right now I'm playing through Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War again.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 21,2007 1:49pm
Okay, this game is fucking amazing.

I'm so pissed, I was supposed to have the whole day off today and was planning on getting high and playing this for like 20 hours straight. Instead now I gotta go to the doctors, and go straight to work afterwards to close for another manager who had a death in the family.

Looks like I'll be pulling an allnighter when I get home.

toggletoggle post by menstrual_sweatpants_disco   at Aug 21,2007 1:54pm
ahhhhh fuck. I need to play this game. I thought I could wait but now with all this talk I'm jonesing.

Q: Worth $60
A: I cannot say definitively, but after maybe 20 minutes of gameplay I was already seeing a lot of reasons to want to replay the game. I've heard the game itself is a bit short, but if it's something I'll play over and over it's worth it to me.

Q:Is it any different that the billion other FPS?
A: YES, YES, YES! This game is nothing like any FPS you've played. It feels more like an RPG than a FPS. With vending machines and the many, many, many plasmids you can get there's a lot of ways to fight and unlike most games that you depend on finding a particular weapon to fight, with Bioshock you can pretty much start right off throwing some fucked up shit around. The world is super detailed, and the pacing is a lot slower and has more of a mix between action and story/plot than any FPS I've ever played.

As a lot of reviews have said, this game plays like a novel. And combat is so versatile that it really is a different game for every imagination.

DO NOT DO THIS, UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCE!!!!!

Seriously, avoid any internet board, or user modifiable site (Wiki). Douchebags have been trolling the web posting some horrible spoilers for this game. At least one major plot point has been ruined for me, and it really does take a lot away from the game.

If you're really curious about bioshock, stick to the main bioshock site, avoid the cult of rapture or the forums, and try the Pc or XBOX demo.

toggletoggle post by boine (nli) at Aug 22,2007 12:23am

Jesus, I just woke up. It's 1:30.

I got home last night around 10:30 and started playing the game. I stopped and went to bed around 5 a.m.

Now, all I want to do is start playing again. What a fun fucking game.

There's ONE thing that upsets me at this point: The SFX. It seems that in addition to the actual noises of the mobs (footsteps, talking, etc...) there are also the same kind of noises randomly mixed into the background music and room noises. Therefore, you're always expecting something right around the corner. It's great for building atmosphere and making things scary/tense, but it's a pain in the ass when you keep running around trying to find where the voices/footsteps are coming from and finally realizing they're just part of the background noise.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 22,2007 3:53pm
If anyone is considering this game, and if you CAN, get the Limeted Edition version. I'm not sure how much more it is, I assume the game is $60 so the LE is $80, but I wish I could have gotten it. It comes with the usual crap: making of DVD, bonus videos, artbooks, etc... but also comes with a real Big Daddy figure. The thing is awesome, I want one!

6" tall and hand painted, totally sick

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 22,2007 3:54pm

toggletoggle post by Mike_Giallo   at Aug 22,2007 4:11pm
My friend got the LE version. The Big Daddy toy doesn't even bend or move, what a rip!!

toggletoggle post by NoodleFace at Aug 22,2007 5:00pm
Got it for the PC yesterday, luckily I bought a new PC last year so I can run it all maxed with pretty good results.

Really awesome game. I haven't heard anyone that hasn't liked this game yet at all. This is what FPS and other games need to look up to. The environment is surreal and the pace is so great. At first I was hesitant of plasmids, I don't really like magic systems in FPS games but it works really well and the ability to instantly change via the right mouse click is awesome.

Side note about the big daddy's. The first one you fight was romping my ass around the room.. then it got cheesed when he got stuck in a corner behind a little sister. Oh well.. Awesome game

toggletoggle post by Greg D at Aug 22,2007 5:06pm
Awesome PC game that came out a few years back.

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 22,2007 5:09pm
I just suck at the combat thus far. Fighting big daddy's is a bitch because I can't swap between weapons and plasmids fast enough and I get charged at.

I never know what to do with the little sisters either. There's no rape and sodomize option. I've just been alternating every other between the two options.

Telekenesis is fun. I like to make piles of dead bodies in interesting places. Right now there's like ten corpses stacked next to the gene bank I use most often. Why not?

toggletoggle post by boine (nli) at Aug 22,2007 5:16pm
is it open ended or do you have to follow the path the game wants?

toggletoggle post by ArrowHead likes Pie at Aug 22,2007 5:43pm
Sorta both. There's a set linear path, story and quest wise. However, you can roam the whole place and return to areas you already went through. Also, enemies respawn in older areas so if you need ammo, money, etc.. you can always backtrack.

toggletoggle post by BobNOMAAMRooney nli at Aug 22,2007 9:28pm
Deus Ex is one of the best (PC) games ever made, first person cyberpunk RPG type game that's pretty open ended (at least in terms of play styles). If you check out the bargain rack at Target you can probably pick it up for $5.00 and there's a hi-def skin pack for download that'll make the graphics look fairly up to date.

toggletoggle post by boine (nli) at Aug 22,2007 10:05pm

I second this time a million; the game is 7 years old and still ahead of its time. You can literally solve just about any problem in the game any number of different ways, and make a character during the course of the game that's good at a whole range of specialties. That, and it's got aspects of a stealth-sneaker (more like Thief than Metal Gear) and a tactical shooter (Rainbow Six-ish, just with one d00d).

I beat Bioshock last night. I got the "bad" ending.

The story was pretty interesting, and really deep. There were tons of little side-plots and backstories in those audio diaries. I hate Ayn Rand, but I didn't mind the atlas shrugged references and similar concepts.

I'm restarting from the beginning and trying to get the "good" ending. I'm also going to explore more and try to find everything.

But all my plans fell apart tonight and I needed a mindnumbing distraction so I ran to bestbuy and picked up this game. I put about an hour into it so far.
