2001 Mitsubishi Eclipse GT. It's got the V6 and a 5-speed tranny. Alpine deck and all the wires (all monster cable) for an amp and subs (the original owner took the amp and subs out because he spent a lot of money on it).

Going junk yard hopping today to find a spare motor to rebuild. Gonna get it ready for a supercharger.

No, cuz then I'd be driving an 80's Camaro or something and playing in a Def Leppard cover band.

waste... should have bought a 1st or late 2nd gen GSX or talon TSI... AWD + turbo 4g engine = DSM superiority of cheap go fast parts and great response to mods. not to mention its not front wheel drive and looks 20 times better. but still, if you can afford to buy this, then good job.

GSX probably would have run him wayyyy more.

Nothing wrong with chicklipses as long as you do them right.

I see too many with fucking candy paint jobs, vynil graphics, body kits, spoilers, wings, systems and underglow with not a single fucking engine mod done to it, then the owners weave through trafic and flash hazards in front of everyone in their stock v6. Blarg.

supercharge it then race me I hope I can have my car done by then. I've been without a fast car for 9 months now and I am pulling my hair out. Congrats.

toggletoggle post by immortal13 at Aug 18,2007 6:31pm
This cars costing me $205 a month for 3 years, and insurance is around $108 a month. So basically one paycheck will cover those payments, which isn't too bad.

Niccolai, I'm a mechanic (no certification, but who cares?). I'm definitely gonna be doing this shit right. Not gonna do much with body mods though.

I really hate to bear the bad news, but:

You're new car is also a piece of shit. I've had a 2000 mitsubishi eclipse GT for the last 5 years. You're going to probably regret it. Parts are stupidly overpriced (paid $1200 for my clutch at 80,000 miles), the car eats tires like mad (gone through at LEAST 3 full sets in 5 years), and the rims are made of the softest aluminum crap ever, thus driving in Boston or wherever is going to murder those things. That in turn will cause balance issues, more useless wear on the tires, and more expensive repairs.

The engine is pretty balls for a 6 cylinder, but as spaldino said the older all wheel drive versions screwed a little harder. However, even if it is a 16 year old girl car (which I admit, it is) it is still one of the most fun cars to drive. When it works.

Also, it's NOT good on gas. When I was still playing with Pillory in Boston (I live near the cape) I was spending around $90 a week.

Do yourself a favor and buy some new rims for it as soon as you can afford it. It will save you a lot of money in the future. There was even a factory recall/class action suit for those rims. You could have gotten a brand new set of rims at mitsu's expense, but the cutoff was in like 2005 or something.

considering the weight ratio and front wheel drive, paying far out the ass for a new clutch is a given.

Welcome to the wonderful world of front wheel drive.

I'm suprized it didn't cost more.

thank you!

turbos > superchargers. not only do you not have boost when you dont want it, but you get MORE out of your boost. turbos are more civil around town and RIP on the highway when you need it. not to mention winter time driving could actually work with a turbo'd car.

nothing feels like a turbo car. the way the car seat feels like its sucking you in slowly as boost is applied... the sounds... man do i miss my XR4Ti...

I do all my own work so it doesn't cost me too much. Plus I get discounts at Pep Boys.

Didn't buy the car from a dealer. Private seller. I'll be getting some rims for it though.

Superchargers offer power on demand because they run from a belt straight from the crank. Turbochargers only offer boost when the turbine finally spools up to speed, which-depending on the size of the turbo-could take quite a while.

With my car being a V6, a twin turbo kit would be more likely because there's two exhaust manifolds with plenty of room for turbos, only problem is getting a second turbo is a lot more expensive than just one or a supercharger.

Not to mention superchargers can boost up to 20 PSI, where the max I've ever heard of coming from an aftermarket turbo would be around 15 PSI, which is a good amount, but more is better, especially with the bottom end work I'll be doing (crank, rods, pistons, etc.), I don't wanna do all that work for a minimal amount of boost.

I like those weird shaped Saabs, especially the brown ones.
I like cars with wood on them.

you dont need to explain, i used to build performance cars for a living. but thanks.

you can get 40+ out of a properly built turbo by the way. if you push 20 with a supercharger for long enough, it will explode.

if you do a supercharger, you will regret it, im telling you this right now from personal expierience.

me too! thats why im buying a roadmaster wagon

who told you you could only get 15 psi from an aftermarket turbo? my old merkur (and my current stock one) hit 15 psi stock on the small garret t3. hell... after 4000 rpm it hit 20 psi (the limit for that turbo). i have never been thrown so hard into my seat before. i hit 18 psi at 2800 rpm... granted i had no exhaust on the car, only a flex pipe exiting next to the passenger front tire and a stock airbox, would have spooled faster with a "cold air" setup. superchargers have a limit of about 20 psi. i have seen turbos pushing 40+ every race day without fail.

the whole spooling issue is mainly a moot point. turbo lag doesnt exist much anymore now that technology has caught up. a single turbo set up would be better for street drivability and power. superchargers are a thing of the past. most drag racers now use turbos instead as you dont need displacement in the 350+ range to make 1800 hp. hell... the sohc 2.3 ford lima engine can make well over 1000 hp thanks to turbos. eat that V8's!

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Aug 19,2007 1:47pm
also, about my own cars... both had over 120k on the ticker and the turbos were both stock and were never rebuilt. think about that ;)

on my 86 xr4ti that i still have there isnt an intercooler as it is stock and doesnt really need one all that much. my faster one that is gone had a decently sized front mount intercooler. the core was about the size of one that came on the ford supercoupes (which are AWESOME cores, if you can get an intercooler from one i suggest you take it ASAP).

also, dont just get a HUGE intercooler if you dont have to... pressure drop might be an issue if you take an intercooler from... an f450+ diesel engine and slap it on your stock 80's turbo car or even an srt4 or something. find a nice balance between size and a lower drop in pressure. thats one of the biggest mistakes most "boy racers" do with wrx's, evos, and gsx/tsi's... they think a huge intercooler means more hp when it really could kill your power.
