Wow. As previously discussed on this very board, I suck at guitar quite a bit. (I've been playing bass for 14 years, and only started actually applying myself at that on and off maybe four years back; I never really picked up much guitar.) However, I've got a practice bug up my ass lately due to a recording project that Josh Hates You and I are working on, and it's paying off crazy dividends. (I.e., actually playing riffs with some degree of precision and having it not be implausible to believe that I could shred at some point.) It's all very foreign.

Yay exercises. Gotta make myself a metronome / drum track CD.

Congrats. I've recently been undergoing some intense renovations of my style/technique, and as much of a pain in the ass as it has been and will continue to be, it is thoroughly worth it.

In anticipation of getting that new guitar, I've been breaking shit down and working on refining my technique. With the les Paul I've always had a tendency to bash the crap out of it. I'm working on slowing down my playing and concentrating on playing with a much lighter touch.

What kind of stuff have you been working on? I can already play every weezer album (except that one bad one, of course) forwards and backwards at 180bpm. I need new exercises.

Exercises are pretty good. You get a lot of growth if you play perfectly with a metronome rather than speeding it up and sloppy.

I found most of my ability increases come from learning stuff I can't play. I learned a lot of CoB solos and slowed them down, then worked them up. Also playing with other people helps you out a lot too since everyone has a different style. Good luck.

Yeah, I've been doing the same thing. I have the same bad habit of getting angry and beating on the thing -- which, also produces some good riffs from time to time. My other guitar player has been forcing me to slow down and be more precise -- alot of his riffs are kind of math-ish and require some thought. It's good being forced to play stuff you normally would not.

Nothing out of the ordinary; mainly just scales and sweep exercises, and lots of improv riffing. Playing Thunderhorse by Dethklok a whole lot, too. I need to get some '80s shred guitar books with pointy guitars on them.

You must be thinking about a different Weezer than I am.

I picked up "The Guitar Necronomicon," but every time I start playing the exercises my girlfriend gets possessed by Deadites and I have to chop her up with a chainsaw. I'm not sure it's improving my technique, any.

"I'm working on slowing down my playing and concentrating on playing with a much lighter touch. "

I find that to be of much importance. For instance, Ross the boss/Blessed Offal plays WAY to fricking hard and fast. Therefore his strings go out of tune quicker (they downtune low), the notes come out a fraction off, and you wear the strings out. With light picking you can go ultra fast and be precise without dong the above mentioned guitar clusterfucking.

Yeah, I was practicing a lot with that book. My hand turned alive and attacked me, so I had to cut it off with the chainsaw. Now I definitely play a lot better.

i've been playing a lot lately... which is weird for me because i never play. i'm doing double duty now and my playing is picking up bigtime. especially since the other band i'm in refers to the actual chords and stuff. my music knowledge is increasing and i'm almost back where i was 3 years ago. huzzah!

I've been working out of a Troy Stetina book. Some great stuff in there. Also I've seen good things out of the "Guitar Grimoire" - just about every scale pattern you can think of.
