HEKSERI- Freshly Drawn Human Blood
Paganized Music - Demo 2006

There are plenty of times when I get enough of all sorts of experimentation and just want to hear metal delivered in straightforward way. And if a band promises to deliver a mix of black and thrashmetal, I’m game. Hekseri (Norwegian for witchcraft), a fairly young band from Eastern Massachusetts delivers a raw mix of thrash from days gone by and early blackmetal ferocity. The three tracks on this demo are hurled out at high speed, although the brakes are pushed at some level to create extra tension and come back with added strength. The production is quite raw, but gives enough room to the raging drums and searing riffs to have their fullest effect. The tormented screams seem to carry quite some variety, which is no surprise as three band members handle the vocals, among witch both the female guitarists. At times I thought a slightly heavier production would be more fitting, but the whole holds a sort of early Venom sharp feel instead of fuzziness wherein all the instruments would blend together, so no harm done to the music. Fans of raw thrashing blackmetal can rest assured that with bands like Hekseri, the future of the genre is secure. This review might fall a bit short of news value as their next assault is soon to be released in form of a split album with Virginia blackened thrashers Gravewurm is to be released by Time Before Time Records from Poland. That’s one to look out to as this three-track demo leaves me hungry for more.
