Okay first I am poor so my set up is not at all awesome like most of you....but I really need a tip or something to get me better tone for my situation. ...I just want a heavier sound outta my rig....tips???
racks? pedals???

so far this is what I have..

peavey vtm all tube 60 watt
4-12 marshall cab
gibson les paul special

I play doom and slam related death.

sonic max?
metal zone?
what do I need ?
I am new to the game so anything would really help me.
thanks.

A metal zone and sonic max won't improve your sound as much as a new head. If you were planning on buying a new piece of gear, I would shoot for a head, but in the meantime, picking up an EQ pedal might help you dial in the tone you want.

What are the settings on your amp and what are the specific problems you have with your tone?

Get a boost pedal. Them heads are great. Get some high gain tubes and they scream. The tripple XXX is based on your heads design. get some high gain tubes, then clean boost it to tighten it up, and an EQ in the loop, and that rig will be fierce. I highly recomend it.

I'd also say get a new pickup for your guitar. Whats in there now? I'd try a dimarzio super distortion in that bitch, should compliment that guitar well.

thank you joshtruction . I agree I like the head. Its not awful it just needs that extra kick. I just have the stock pick-ups in it.

what tubes should I get and how should I go about changing them?

toggletoggle post by Kylenli at Mar 26,2007 1:16am
The amp is known for not being able to get the low end....as I think I have read....so its kind of thin when played loud..doesnt thump like it should.

They are fine heads, but if you don't like the tone you're getting out of it, you might want to look into a different one.

Anywho, Like Josh said, some new pickups would increase your gain/output and certain pickups (like an EMG 85, for example) would add a lot of low end to your tone.

and the right EQ pedal could provide you with a gain boost and low end boost.

and before you change your tubes, i would try simply biasing them hotter.

hotter bias means more gain.

what eq pedal would you suggest?

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at Mar 26,2007 1:30am
I would go with either the Boss GE-7 or spend a tiny bit more and get the MXR M108. It has volume boost, gain boost, and 10 band EQ.

Id say a rack eq with more than 10 freq's.
Sounds like a Peavey 60/60 classic?
I ran a pod and a boss ns-2 thru one and a 1960a and it sounded very fat.
Im sure the Paul would make it fatter.

The more EQ bands, the better. I wasn't sure if he has a rack though.

mxr micro amp is niiiice

I'd go with an MXR EQ in the loop, and a boost pedal up front. JJ, electro harmonics, and sovtek all make really decent high gain tubes for that amp. Go to www.dougstubes.com and look for high gain preamp tubes. Good palce, and Doug will definitly take care of you. Them amps are a little old and most likely need power amp tubes also. I bet jsut that alone would make a huge difference.

If you want a boost pedal I can custom build you one. Just let me know.

all you need is a decent boost pedal. vtm 60s are frigging sweet and get super high gain no problem with a boost.
