I don't care. Guitar, bass, drums, cameras, whatever.

All the talk about cabs in the other thread made me want to put my set up in perspective.

Guitars:
Main:
ESP LTD MH-1000NT (Seymour Duncan JB/59 setup)
Backups:
Epiphone Les Paul Standard (Dimarzio Tone Zone/PAF Pro set up [bridge/neck])
BC Rich Neck-Thru NJ Series Mockingbird (Dimarzio Evolution pickups)

Signal line from guitar to amps:
guitar to Whirlwind A/B/Y switch.

from A to:
Korg DTR-1000 Rack Mount Tuner to
Rocktron Hush Super C Rank Mount Noise Reducer to
Mesa Boogie Dual Rectifier to
Mesa Dual Rectifier 4 x 12 slant cab

from B to
ISP Decimator Noise Redution Pedal to
ENGL Powerball (v2) to
Avatar Straight Cab. Custom with 2 Celestion G12H-30's and 2 Eminence V12's in an X pattern.
only thing in the FX loop is a Boss Digital Reverb/Delay pedal (RV-3)

All units powered by Furman Power Conditioner rack unit. SKB 6-space rack unit.

Got all Monster cables with the exception of one Mogami.

Also use D'addario strings.

I have two kits
one is a a Tama Rockstar kit, my first kit ever but it still sounds awesome
Metallic Grey
10" 12" 14" (toms)
22" bass drum
Tama hardware (mostly)

14" Pacific Piccolo Snare
14" Rogers Snare (with an awesome gold sparkle finish)
Tama Iron Cobra Single and Double Pedals

My NEW kit i got is PRETTY SWEET and sounds massive even though its a Fusion Kit
Its a Mapex and i got it at a steal for $420 w/hardware included..PLUS my gf helped me buy it (she rules)

Its awesome because its got a free standing floor tom which my Tama kit does not, which allows it to be way deeper and in turn sound bigger. The finish is also an awesome matte black swirl. The pic doesnt do it justice at all. It also has a 20" bass drum that sounds like a fuckin cannon. The toms are 10" 12" 14"

Cymbals:
14" Sabian AAX hi hats (which i'm trading soon for my friends' 14" Zildjian New Beat hats)
17" Zildjian A Medium Crash
18" Zildjian Z Custom Rock Crash
21" Zildjian A Custom Medium Ride
18" Zildjian Z Custom China Crash

I use Vic Firth 3A's for anything not Metal/Heavy, but for the Heavy Stuff I use Regal Tip Alex Van Halen Signatues

Not that it will make much of a perceptable difference. To the best of my knowledge, low B on a bass guitar is well above 28Hz. Either way, if you want really tight low end you should consider a cab with 15 or 18 inch speaker(s) in it.

I have to ask the people who use noise reduction racks/pedals in front of their amps, do you really think its worth it? you are just putting BAD sounding circuits (yeah those $100 pedals, that are mass manufactured in japan, don't really take into acount preserving signal quality) in the signal path from your guitar to your head. especially the people playing through nice gear!

i don't mean to be a dick and call you out, but brian dc, you are running a MH-1000NT into a a/b box into a noise reduction pedal (ugh) into one of the best sounding, high gain, botique amps ever! are you using that much gain that you have serious noise problems?!? i play through a bogner uberschall (which has some fucking gain!!!) and have no problems with feedback or extranious noise.

whatever, im not trying to be an asshole, just being a gear snob! haha

maybe we can have a intelligent conversation about this shit!?!

p.s. monster fucking BLOWS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! MOGAMI all the way!

It suppresses up AND down strokes, and knows the difference.
Definitely the best NR out there.
I guess its also why its almost 500 bucks.
Totally worth it, IMO.

There are a few issues with the ENGL that make me go the route that I do.

The first thing is that the built in Noise Gate is not organic enough, AT ALL. The fact that it has a built in Noise Gate leads me naturally to my next point.

The reason why there is a built in noise gate is that without it, the ENGL is obnoxiously noisy and almost unplayable at loud volumes. I got the ISP because it is the only supressor that can actually kill the noise on the ENGL without it sounding like someone switched off the circuit, cutting off chords or notes held for a long interval, etc.

The other issue about the ENGL is that in a non-miced environment a lot of the amps positives become it's negative. It is a very smooth, high gain amp. It is one of the things I love about it. However, to get a quality mid-cut out of it, you end up losing a lot of overall tone. So, my solution was to continue running my Dual in tandem with it at a lower volume. It sort of picks off where the ENGL leaves off in big rooms.

About the a/b stuff. I have been contemplating cutting out the Mesa part of my rig. And for club shows, I only use the ENGL with the a/b still so that I can keep my tuner out of the ENGL's loop. (By the way, the tuner is never in the ENGL's loop, I keep it in the Mesa loop because it's lower volume and really only there to carry my parts further in the room). I need to have the tuner at my beck and call live because of the fact that I don't play a Floyd and it does go out of tune. I understand that there is a slight effect on my signal because of this. But I also understand that other people listening really don't care about that. By the way, I have played straight into the amp, and it is just a subtle difference.

I am thinking about only running the ENGL alone today in practice and trying that out, but still through both cabs of course.

oh, don't read any of that as sensitive defensive. I'm just explaining my logic.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc  at Jan 12,2007 11:56am
oh. And I keep my gain on about 9 o'clock (3 if you think 0-10) So it's not the adjustable gain that creates the noise. I don't know why they can't defeat that problem.

haha

ok, ok touche sirs! in my defense, i don't like to drop my les paul down the minor third to play out with abhorred then have to switch strings and move the bridge after every gig to get it back to standard for school, it has no trem system, and im wicked parinoid about taking that anywhere. ive already had two guitars either walk away or break away from home. and i spent all my money on the bogner and can't afford a new guitar haha

and if you want to go even further tearing apart my setup, the 1960A's are a really harsh sounding cabinet. the black shadow loaded full back mesa straight cabinet is on my wish list.

but aside from the signal degradation, i just never liked a noise gate and never really needed one. i can have my amp with my master volume at about 3 o'clock, my channel volume at about 2, and my gain at 3 and not have any squealing problems.

toggletoggle post by brian_dc nli at Jan 13,2007 1:32pm
pushed my 2 cabs with just the ENGL at practice last night and I definitely am liking that better than the two amp combination.

This means that I need to find a use for the Mesa...I don't want to sell because I do love that amp. Normally I don't like Mesa's and I managed to buy one that I like when I was 18...I also think there is a sentimental attachment. I do have a spare Ampeg 4x12...I could have an incredibly excessive practice amp!

JSX Joe Satriani Signature Head
Item # 00575450
MSRP: $1,599.99

Peavey and Joe Satriani set out to create an amplifier that would give the widest range of EQ options and gain structures possible. This amp delivers sounds ranging from the Classic 50 to vintage British to the modern Triple XXX and all tones inbetween. The versatile and comprehensive control section supplies a master volume pot and independent volume knobs for each of the 3 channels (Ultra, Crunch and Clean). Tone shaping is accomplished through passive controls for Bass, Mid and Treble on the Clean channel, while the Ultra and Crunch channels utilize active low, mid and high controls. The Clean channel is pristine yet warm and is specifically voiced to work well with effects pedals. The Ultra and Crunch channels have gain controls and fat switches to further assist in taming this thunderous tube-powered beast while achieving killer sound.Global resonance and presence knobs increase control of high-end tones, while a noise gate on the Crunch and Ultra channels cuts down on the excess noise generated by running the gain and EQ controls on high settings. Since the gate is fully adjustable, you can really clamp down, leave it slightly open or just turn it off.

Features
