Launch Radio Networks reports: METALLICA has written about 25 songs for its ninth studio effort and is now concentrating on trimming that list to one album's worth of material, which it will begin recording in January. Drummer Lars Ulrich told Launch on Tuesday (December 5) that the band's summer European tour, on which METALLICA played its classic 1986 album "Master of Puppets" in its entirety, paved the way for the sound of the new album. "What I hear sounds very lively, very spunky, got a lot of energy," he said. "I think that the shows we played over the summer, we were definitely leaner and kind of in better shape than we've been in a long time. I mean, having to deliver 'Master of Puppets' for three months this summer definitely revitalized some of that stuff in us, and it's been kind of fun having that in the back of our mind as we've been going through this process. I don't know what else to say. It's a little early to put it into a one-sentence soundbite on Blabbermouth, if you know what I mean."

Referring to the controversial, low-fi production on 2003's "St. Anger", Ulrich said that he's "taken the drums out of the cardboard boxes" this time, and that lead guitarist Kirk Hammett will lay down guitar solos on this record.

The new disc will be produced by Rick Rubin and is expected out by late 2007.

A video clip of METALLICA performing a new song during their headlining appearance on August 15, 2006 in Seoul, South Korea has been posted online at YouTube.com. A high-quality video clip of METALLICA performing another new track during their headlining appearance at the Gelredome in Arnhem, Holland on June 8, 2006 European tour can be viewed at this location.

Meanwhile, People magazine has reported that Ulrich and actress Connie Nielsen (photo#1, photo#2, photo#3) are expecting their first child together after dating for two years. The baby is due early next summer. Both parents are 42 years old.

Nielsen, who has appeared in the movie "Gladiator" and the TV series "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit", has a 16-year-old son named Sebastian (photo#1, photo#2) from a previous marriage. Ulrich has two sons, eight-year-old Myles and five-year-old Layne, also from a previous marriage.

Don't care what anyone on this board says. This band will always be one of my favourites, and wrote some amazing music in their time. The last couple albums sucked, the first 4 were absolute masterpieces. I thought the Black album was really good, and there were a few cuts off Load that I enjoyed. but I'm actually curious as to what this will sound like; even though they could release the greatest record they've ever done, and most people will bash, simply because they're stubborn and have hated Metallica for so long that they don't want to go back to liking them

Metallica died in a bus crash in Sweden, 1986.

Despite the handful of flops Metallica has released in the past decade or so, I still think they're talented musicians and while they aren't what they once were, they can still write some decent tunes. Listening to the Black Album, Load, and Re-Load, if you drop all the radio hits, there's some pretty decent stuff there. But maybe that's the nostalgia talking - I used to spin those albums for hours when I was a teenager.
That said, I refuse to believe that this next record might be a some return-to-form. Bob Rock won't be blowing them while they record, and they have inspiration from playing "Master of Puppets" all summer, but let's face it - they're businessmen now. They don't care about taking over the world anymore. They did that 20 years ago. They make albums now because they have to fulfill their end of the record contract, and it doesn't matter what they play, if it's rock music and it says "Metallica" on the cover, it'll sell.
Not to mention Lars has always been the fast talker of the group, of course he's going to try to boost the hype on this record.

I remember all the hype about St.Anger, "oh it is raw, just like the first few". "This will be a return to form for metallica". "all our old school fans will not be disappointed". AND IT FUCKING SUCKED!!. Fuck them

I love that album, technical as shit

the only good thing that came out of St Anger was that they could still pull off speed and get gritty...james really needs to stop singing and get back to the harsher style vocals...he sounds like a gay moustached cowboy...

I think it is truly impossible for them to forget where they came from... And forget the kind of music their fans REALLY got into them for.

I don't think another good Metallica album is out of the question and/or out of reason.

and justice for all is by far my favorite metallica album. it's dark as all hell, for obvious reasons, and has a completely different feel than all the other albums.

i'll listen to the new one when it comes out just out of curiosity, but obviously my expectations are extremely low to say the least.

i listened to those two songs on youtube. they are both far better than anything this band has done in a real long time. but good? i don't know. can't say that i still have enough respect for this band to have given it a fair chance or if it's just a couple of mediocre songs.

I say we get a fanboy volunteer to buy one copy and post it up here in its entirety as a .zip file.

If the album doesn't suck, then we'll buy it too.

If the album sucks, we don't buy and Metallica gets no money form us. No money means Bob Cock gets fired.

I was one of the die hard fans who gave them our benefits of doubt when Load Of Shit came out. But I faced the reality that Metallica Is Dead when the sequal to it was released. I swore that day that I will never again give them my money untill they truly put out a good CD. They have yet to accomplish this and every CD of theirs from that day have all been CDR in my collection.

Only by returning to what made them big, will they ever regain the respect of the fans. And I don't just means the music, they need to give the next release away to the fans via the internet so they may decide before hand if the album is worth their money instead of getting handed miles of hype by bribed CD reviewers and media outlets, only to find out they lied after you buy the shit shingle. That is an ultimate betrayal to the fans.

If only the rest of Selloutica's fans would also vow to not give them money again untill they release a good album(and followed through), Metallica would go back to the good ol' days in no time flat. When the band is all about money, the fans control the band. They just don't know it.

That's funny. But no.

Metallica was a great band and released 4 amazing albums, at least one of which is my favorite metal record period.

Nowadays, a crying shame.

they're not working with him anymore, which means (hopefully)

Kirk gets his wah back
Kirk gets to do solos
Lars' snare won't sound like a steel folding chair
Jaymez will get to spell his name JAMES again

anyone else care to contribute to the list?

I would hope without Bob Rock..
-They will remember how to actually compose an interesting song, rather then half ass'd recordings of riffs that are then copy / pasted in pro tools to make a song...
-They will regain a little work ethic as far as recording well produced music. Not this toss a few mics up and do it in one take bullshit.
-Kirk will actually go back to writing solos WITHOUT the wah. Seriously, that guy is a wah peddel abuser. He just stomps the thing up and down.

Rick Rubin produced records for Johnny Cash. He's also produced albums for many hip-hop acts. Just because he produced a thrash album 20 years ago doesn't mean Metallica's going to snap out of it upon meeting him and make Master of Puppets II. Metallica will never made a good album again. They're businessmen with the ability to play musical instruments, they have to help the record company make money, so they're doing another album. Ignore it.

Rick Rubin will have nothing to do with the actually album. He also produced a slew of horrible nu-metal cds and The Cure. So saying this album should be "meta" because of him is horseshit.
