for me it was 12 1/2 with rammstein ad nu metal. Then at 15 i discovered thrash, black and death

I was probably about 14 in 1998 when a friend of mine bought me a copy of Metallica's "Metallica" for Christmas. I was probably about 16 when I started getting into heavier, more extreme stuff.

I guess I was around nine, how ever old you are in third grade

I was 12 when I bought my first death metal cd. It was Wake up and smell the Carcass by Carcass and The Bleeding by Cannibal Corpse.

toggletoggle post by thegreatspaldino   at Oct 29,2006 1:46pm
i was almost seven when i got black sabbath paranoid on tape for free. got my first cd at 8... megadeth's "so far so good so what"

toggletoggle post by MarkFuckingRichards  at Oct 29,2006 2:27pm
somewhere between 8 and 10 my dad played "paranoid" by black sabbath for me, and i was hooked. after that i just got into metallica, megadeth and bands like that. i got my first slayer cd at 12, as well as sepultura-schizophrenia and the bestial devastation cd. then got napalm death-fear. emptiness. despair at 13, and i've been hooked on death metal since.

When I was in second grade my neighbor was a huge metal head, and played "Tomb of the Mutilated" by Cannibal Corpse for me. The first cd I ever bought myself was "the bleeding" back in 94.

My dad was also big into Sabbath and got me into them around the same time.

toggletoggle post by SlavonicIdentity at Oct 29,2006 2:39pm
About 11 I got into black/death/thrash a little, but mostly listened to shit. 13 when I was heavily into black/death/thrash and have been since.

I'm wearing a Motley Crue in pictures of my 10th B-day party, so probably a little before then 9-9 1/2 years old.

toggletoggle post by brendannli at Oct 29,2006 4:17pm
9 years old. white zombie, then sepultura, then slayer, then deicide, then cradle of filth, then year of our lord, then at the gates, then i heard earth crisis and snapcase and strife and one king down and vision of disorder and cave in and converge and fortydaysrain. thn i heard acrid and reversal of man tears of avarel, and hassan i sabbah and usurp synapse and combatwoundedveteran and as the sun sets and rotten sound.

now i listen to sigur ros and hot chip and jedi mind tricks and weezer.

toggletoggle post by Dissector   at Oct 29,2006 5:59pm
I've been into gay metal since 2nd grade. Then 5th/6th grade I got into punk. And in 6th grade I bought my first Obituary cd.

toggletoggle post by retzam at Oct 29,2006 6:00pm
I was in 4th grade, so probably 9 or 10, when I got into Metallica and Maiden through my brother. I didn't get into death metal or other kinds metal until I was 14 though.

i was either 10 or 11 when i started getting into old school thrash/crossover and nwobhm. it took me like 3 or 4 years before i started getting into extreme stuff.

toggletoggle post by dyingmuse   at Oct 29,2006 9:51pm edited Oct 29,2006 9:59pm
This is a repost i think

I was 11 the year was 86 first album was Master of puppets, followed by all the Metallica albums at the time, then Reign In Blood, "Them" from King Diamond and Sanctuary's Refuge denied. shortly after I heard Candlemass' Nightfall and I was all about Doom. in 90 I Got into Morbid Angel, Carcass, Bolt Thrower, Deicide and Suffocation. in about 93 I heard My Dying Bride's Ep, and Anathema's serenades/crestfallen, Paradise Lost's Lost Paradise, Disembowelment and Paramecium.

I started listening to metal when I was 9 years old. This was when Motley crue had shout at the devil and Ozzy with Diary of a Madman and then Iron maiden after Number of the beast was out. Early eighties when that was metal. Around 1982 and 83....luckily metal became more extreme since.

1979. Motorhead and Judas Priest, I was just getting my first records and my cousin put some new vinyl on the stack with Kiss, J Geils Band, Boston, etc. that I already had. I didn't even really think of it as 'metal' then, because I was just over 5 years old.

toggletoggle post by DreamingInExile   at Oct 30,2006 7:58am
I grew up on Pink Floyd, Led Zeppelin, J Geiles Band, Steve Miller Band, etc. My dad waws always into classic rock. I first got Metallica's Ride the Lightning when I was like 11, followed by Queensryche's S/T album, and one of the Fotsam & Jetsam albums (I forget which one)

I didn't strat to get into Doom/Death/Grind until I was in Highschool, thanks to my friend Chris at the time (DHTH knows the Chris I'm referring to)

and DHTH furthered my metal knowledge & broadened my horizions in the metal genres over time during the years of AD&D we all played.

I don't think people's cop-outs of black sabbath and metallica count.

toggletoggle post by succubus  at Oct 30,2006 8:22am
how can you say sabbath doesn't count? pfft!
I was 4 (older brother) listened to Kiss (they were my favorite band at the time), ACDC, Black Sabbath

toggletoggle post by Messerschmitt at Oct 30,2006 8:58am
it started when i was in the womb of my cunt mother. my asshole father was cranking sabbath, zz top, skynard, and more on the record player. he also played a lot of guitar. then they divorced and when my father would pick me up, we'd hang in his basement room and listen to records. from their i went the extreme route eventually turning my father onto old metallica, soundgarden, and anthrax etc. i was around 8 or 9 at that time.

toggletoggle post by RichHorror  at Oct 30,2006 9:00am
I was played Sabbath, The Ramones and The Stooges as a baby. That's about as close as I can get.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Oct 30,2006 9:05am
I knew everyone in Motley Crue's name when I was four thanks to my cousin George. My lifelong friend Joanne always was and that's where Faith No More came in around 6 or 7 years old. My next door neighbor got me further into it right after with Guns N Roses, Metallica, Megadeth and Green Jello. So pretty much all my life. I used to use my sesame street tape recorder to record videos off mtv when my mother wasn't looking.

My daughter is already fanatical about Manowar, I'd say she's well on her way.

toggletoggle post by Mess at Oct 30,2006 9:08am
Megadeth was probably my most influential band growing up. my panties still get in a knot everytime i hear holywars.

toggletoggle post by xmikex at Oct 30,2006 9:14am
The summer before I entered 4th grade (probably) my younger brother and I sat around watching MTV all day. GNR had just come out with the Use Your Illusions albums, Skid Row had just put out a new album, and so had Warrant.

I don't remember how it came up but, but my family was driving home from somewhere and my mom asked my brother and I if we were interested in going to see New Kids on the Block when they came around. My brother, and I both said no way. My mother asked us what concert we would want to go see. She almost fainted when we both, in unison, said Guns N Roses.

toggletoggle post by pam   at Oct 30,2006 9:24am
Use Your Illusion 1 and 2, and Megadeth's Rust in Peace, Peace Sells, and later Countdown albums pretty much made up 90% of my listening time my whole childhood and adolescence. The rest of the time it was Faith No More.

You know what was really fun? Being a kid who didn't like rap music growing up through the Brockton public school system.

Try explaining to a 6th grade black kid that just Tag Team isn't as good as Skid Row.

15. Killing Time, Leeway, Into Another and Sheer Terror. Before that I was into Minor Threat, Dead Kennedys and The Ramones

then at 19 i discovered wumpscut and skinny puppy and from there i wasn't that excited over metal anymore
I started listening to punk and hardcore at 19 as well
At age 9 i bought areosmiths' permanent vaction on cassette. But aerosmith isn't metal

BTW the 1st metal album i bought was rammstein's sehnsucht

I remember listening to my mothers megadeth tape, but cant place the exact year (around symphony of destruction). For a while there, I was into sucidal tendancies and anthrax. Not bad considering my father listens to country and grandfather irish drinking music.

toggletoggle post by Granny_Monster at Oct 30,2006 2:35pm
I know it's not really metal, but what got me started was turning on the tv when I was about... oh, eight and seeing Alice in Chains' video for "Again" on MTV early one morning. My dad came downstairs, said "Oh, I see you've discovered MTV" (we had just gotten cable) and blocked it right then and there. So, that kinda got me hooked on early 90's alternative and grunge, and it just kinda went from there as I started seeking out harder, faster stuff.

toggletoggle post by Granny_Monster at Oct 30,2006 2:39pm
I should also mention that I wasn't allowed to listen to anything but classical music and the likes of Paula Abdul until about 7 or 8.

I was 24 years old when I realized how lucky am I to have never heard even 3 seconds worth of Skinny Puppy.

That's a tradition I'm going to have to continue.

don't be a hater. while the sophomore album was not as good as the debut, it's still better than anything made in the queer metal genre.

Hahaha...

Err... Eight. Had a friend who had an older cousin from PA that was into thrash metal and punk, so we got tape dub copies of everything. The 2nd (actual store-bought) tape I ever owned was Iron Maiden "Seventh Son of a Seventh Son" (first was Michael Jackson "Bad"), and then it was tons of Megadeth and L.A. Guns (and Public Enemy), along with assorted US punk (all the LA shit, mainly).

Another friend's older brother was into crossover, so I took a detour into Agnostic Front and S.O.D., Exploited, Nuclear Assault, so on and so forth.
Got ahold of two tapes when we were 14 that were pretty influential (read corrupting) to us at the time, Anal Cunt "Morbid Florist" and Darkthrone "Soulside Journey." (Good luck trying to track down more Darkthrone when you're 14 and it's still the early nineties. Damn you kids and your interweb!) Enter high school and girls and punk bands, and then full circle back to Iron Maiden. And on and on and on and...
