I need a new computer monitor. My old CRT is dying, and cuts out frequently. I keep the neighbors awake at night with the sound of my slapping the thing til it turns back on again.

I want to get a nice flat panel monitor, but cheap. I've found deals at circuit city and comp USA for 17" monitors that run around $160. However, I've notices the refresh rates are not very good, and that the response time is anywhere from 8ms to 25 ms!!!! I play games a lot, and watch DVD and videos on here often. Are these monitors suck ass? Also, would I even be able to find a decent one in that price range? I've seen REALLY good ones for $500, but the next step down I just keep coming across junk.

Help me out here guys and gals. Ever since I gave Mel Brooks a blowjob, I've become obsessed with saving money. I don't want to spend more than $175 on a monitor, but I'd like a flat panel. If I'm chasing something that doesn't exist, I'll just get another CRT.

I bought a 24" 16:10 LCD about 6 months ago. Thing is fucking RIDICULOUS. DVDs and games kick ass. 1920x1200 baby.

ya...Id suggest an LG slim, but theyre pricey.

I went to circuit city today and got a 19" acer flat panel. It's pretty sweet. So much larger than my old 15" crt. $229, it was little more than I wanted, but I can live with it.

The LCD is bugging me out a bit. I'm almost ready to try throwing a piece of glass in front of it. I get this weird feeling like it's burning my eyes, and I've only been sitting here for about 20 minutes. Imagine what a 3 hour World of Warcraft session, or an 8 hour recording session will feel like.

The bigger size and resolution is awesome. The picture quality seems really hazy, though, compared to the CRT.

whats the respone time/ contrast ratio?

lcd's supposedly arent as good for gaming?? I heard that years ago, but my Sony lcd works fuckin great for games, so I dunno how true that is, if at all, anymore.

On a side note, yet somewhat related.....My Sony HDTV has a 10,000:1 contrast ratio.

That is insane.

Not too bad.
Contrast ratio is, in layman terms, how well the blacks stand in line with colors, and whites, basically.
The higher the better.
