There is nothing wrong with pay to play. If you can't sell a few dozen tickets then maybe you need to give it up and start a real band.

you don't have to pay upfront either...so it's not like you're getting screwed out of your money, it's just partly your responsibility to get people to go to the show(as it is for everyone...any dipshit can say they can draw 30 people to a show, so they'll get booked, then come the night of the show they brought 2 girlfriends)

when we played the mushroomhead show at mark's we had something like $310 of the $375 and he didn't even care...he was just glad we at least made an effort and did well

I'm against pay to play but it depends really. I mean if you have to sell a few tickets, no minimum, and make a dollar off each ticket that's cool but when you're forced to sell tickets or you wont play that's just fucking rediculous. Some bands can't sell 30 tickets at $15.00 then if they want to play that show they're forced to spend their own money to buy the tickets and play the show. My band needs to sell 15 tickets at $15.00 to play with Cattle Decapitation otherwise we can't but luckily we have alot of friends who are into Cattle Decapitation and live in that area so it's not too hard. If you know you can sell a shit load of tickets like it's nobody's business then I say go for it. I just wish these places would definately promote these shows much better than here take these tickets, sell them and get people to come otherwise you're not playing. Us bands need to start getting some compensatation for playing shows, gas prices are astonomical these days so either way you'll always be paying to play unless someone gives them some gas money.

p[romoters don't want to promote and get people in there so they force bands to sell tickets cause they know otherwise the bands won't do anything.
bands don't want to promote cause it's "not their job" and won't do anything until forced to do it and then will bitch.
the promoters currently have the bands in a head lock cause there aren't any places for bands to play at anymore.

pay for play in any form is gay.
bands not doing shit but showing up is gay.
bands getting huge garrenties is gay.
people not going to shows is gay.

so you get in the situation now, where there is too few people for the shows that are out there. this can only go on for so long cause it's coming out of the pockerts of promoters, clubs, bands, and the families of the three. we are on the crest of too many shows for the demand, a show "bubble", and I'm afraid it's going to crash and there will be no bands, no promoters, no clubs, no shows. people only have so much disposible income. and I for one do not want to go back to hootie and the blowfish cover night at the bars.

people not going to shows really is wicked gay...they'd rather stay home and get fucked up like "real bands" do though

you are exactly right rev. there are way too many shows and way too many bands. i am not for or necessarily against pay to play. yeah it sucks, but we are in no position to be choosy. we want the opportunity to play for more than 3 people, and people that actually give a shit, and to play with a band that is recognized. it is purely at the discretion of the band, if they want to do it, what makes them "gay" for doing so? for some bands, like the Sac, it isnt easy to get 30 people to see us play for Suffocation, hell i dont even know 30 people who even know who they are, nevermind those that will drive an hour to see it, but we still want the opportunity. and yes, this is one of the many supports that is ready to snap and cause the whole scene to crash and burn. lack of unity of course is the main flaw, but that isnt going to change. ever.

i think he meant that pay to play sucks cuz it leaves room for promoters to be lazy and causes undue stress on the bands involved but is worth it for a chance to play witha band you really like and get exposure to tons of new people
