A quote from a friend: "I should also let it be known that I do NOT like PANTERA. I fucking hate them and they are not influential, listenable OR innovators. They are not the "heaviest fuckin' band, brah!" OR are they an essential "Metal" band. They are the prime example of false Metal and are fucking fakes, ripoffs and trend hoppers. Fuck this band."

THAT'S different, Nirvana was an awful band that got their entire sound from other bands...nothing was original about that band at all. Christ, the main riff in Come as You Are was pulled note for note from a Killing Joke song.
I wouldnt say Pantera innovated Metal too much, but Dime was a hell of a guitar player and they made brutal Heavy Metal in the mainstream when a lot of bands really weren't

Regardless of whether you like Pantera or despise them the fact remains Pantera next to Metallica was and still is one of the BIGGEST metal acts to ever exist. Pantera was on a level that none of us will ever see again let alone expierence. Every 5 or 6 years you have to have a band like that try and bring the heavier stuff mainstream ie (the black dahlia murder) now BDM is in no way as big as Pantera but they are certainly on the forefront of making heavier music more mainstream whether this is good or bad is a whole new argument.-Morbid

toggletoggle post by Morbid Mike BMR at May 5,2006 10:21am

I don't really see what was so great about Exhorder either. Granted, they had some good energy and some good riffs, but they were nothing special compared to all the vastly superior late 80s thrash acts at the time.

Pantera. Well, they have had a few good guitar riffs (on the first two 'heavy' albums) that, had anyone else played them, I doubt we'd be seeing cries of Exodouchebag or Artilleraunchy, and a singer who has done his best work with another band, that is about all I can say. The novelty of Pantera (particularly Phil Anselmo's lame ass must-be-drug-addict-and-loud-mouthed-tough-guy-for-controversy's-sake attitude) wore thin after high school. When they opened for Suicidal Tendencies (and Exodus I think?) at the Channel in 1990 they played a good set. That's all I've got, there were so many better bands to concern myself with and the same holds true today.

I too was an exhorder fan way before ever hearing of Pantera, I think I first heard them when Far Beyond Driven came out. There was so much killer stuff between Exhorder's Slaughter of the vatican in 1990, and Pantera in 1994 , that I guess i just missed out on pantera, oh well. wasn't too big of a loss. Maybe living in south florida at that time and the death metal scene down there had something to do with it also

Is there some other pressing of the album than the one I have? Because these vocals are not very good, and the lyrics are some of the most pedestrian I have ever read:

turn a deaf ear to all of
your
previous hearings so I can
tell you
the truth...

here we come to defy
all we have in mind is us
and all the rest is refuse
so you can stay or turn
away

what's mine is mine
and hers is mine
and his is mine
and yours is mine
that's the fact

I can recall a time when I
was young and was
taught to do
what is socially
acceptable

such a shit receptable

well, fool, I don't know
about you
but I'm gonna get some of
that pie

toggletoggle post by Anthony nli at May 7,2006 12:16am
The lyrics don't look great typed out but it's the way he delivers them that makes them awesome. I must have a very different taste in vocals than you because I think he's an ideal vocalist.

I'm not surprised that he's wearing that shirt, they were from the same state and I remember Phil himself telling my friends and I to check them out (among other bands). That's actually how I got my first Exhorder cassette. As much as I loathe what that guy became, one thing I can't gripe about is that he's always been into underground music and still is.

Their vocals are indeed similar (I think moreso than the riffs, drums, etc). But here is my confusion, and this has always troubled me because there has always been that 'Pantera sucks they ripped off Exhorder' thing going on for the past 14-15 years:

If Kyle's vocals are great, then why are the Pantera vocals terrible? Surely they are similar, but by this same reasoning, aren't all death and black metal vocals post-1990 also ripoffs? I just can't wrap my mind around why this logic applies to Pantera but not to those 5,373,365 other bands. Is it because they sold out stadiums, made a lot of money and a lot of fans, but Exhorder couldn't even last for three albums?

I know I'm playing the devil's advocate here, anyway, the Pantera 'defense' is at an end, because I have so many other better reasons to dislike that band than because they were influenced by Exhorder.

toggletoggle post by Anthony nli at May 8,2006 9:03am
yeah I agree, if you're going to hate on Pantera it's better just to leave Exhorder out of it.

Imagine if you put all that time and energy into your band and released two killer albums and then 10 years later the only way people remember you, most having never even heard you, is to say that another band ripped you off? Exhorder (at least Kyle Thomas, from an interview I read) hate that shit and wish people would stop it. Plus, it's not like there's bad blood or resentment between the two bands.

The reason why Exhorder broke up and never made it big is because Roadrunner screwed them over, not because Pantera stole their success.

toggletoggle post by ConquerTheBaphomet  at May 8,2006 9:40am
I have to admit, I've never heard Exhorder. I've heard OF them but never their music. Where would I find their music so I can make a valid and sophisticated answer to why Pantera did this or that?

I hate every lyric he ever wrote
I hate every stupid haircut he ever had
I hate that stupid pose he does on the cover of Cowboys From Hell
I hate all the dumb shit he says in between songs
I hate that stupid sour puss bass player, "Rex" what the hell kind of name is that?
I hate Pantera's ENTIRE fanbase
I hate everyone who's ever yelled "PANTERA" at a show that Pantera didn't play
I hate their stupid clean vocals
I hate when meathead teenage couples think Cemetary Gates is "their song."
I hate any Joe Christianni looking motherfucker who ever thought Walk was the personal soundtrack to his life
I hate the end of Walk when Phil Anselmo goes "You talkin to me.....I'm not home boy"
I hate anyone that ever took Pantera lyrics seriously

but when you weed out all the bullshit, and disregard Reinventing The Steel they wrote some outstanding music, Dime was the absolute man, and Far Beyond Driven is still a mega sweet album.

but anyone who ever thought Pantera is now, or was ever the "kings of metal" (a title I always abhored) is in a Joe Christianni poser coma.

Sadam Hussein had more money than me from doing what he did, and I don't like him.
Wayne Newton could fit my apartment in his bathroom, and I don't respect him.
Rupert Murdock could buy, and sell me a hundred times over, and he's still a son of a bitch.
50 Cent has more money per buck tooth then I make in a year. STILL.. the ASPCA puts 1,000 homeless cats to sleep every day that have more talent then him.

thats like kids who try to say Eastcide was a worthwhile band because they played on TV. Big shit.

and Phil had some of the best heavy metal singing around at the time. Fact of the matter is. You cannot start to sing like him without at least 3 or 4 people noticing who you are influenced by... Right away. Same goes for Dimebag.

I love how most of you guys won't even recognize talent in spite of the consensus. It doesn't matter really what you think about the band itself. If a band is selling that much music. And touching that many people at once. THEY HAD TO HAVE BEEN DOING SOMETHING RIGHT!!!

All I do is read music and play bass. I don't have a girlfriend and I don't care either. I know I am not going anywhere with my musical career. But I am going for it anyways. Amen to that. I enjoyed the episode. Sucks that everything ends on a sour note, and not just wth Dime's death....the fact that Phil and the Abbot family will pretty much never reconcile with each other. As much as an arrogant prick Phil can be, and as much as he fucked alot of things up in regards to Dime and Pantera...It does seem as if he feels horrible about what happenned. Everybody says shit out of anger sometimes, and everybody says things they wish they could take back. Unfortunately for Phil, he'll never have the opportunity to apoligize to Dime, and he just wants to make things right with Vince and Rita...and you can't fault a man for wanting that.

people were all about Dime/Pantera when he was alive, so I disagree with your first statement. I will say that all these lame-o bands that do Pantera tributes during their shows and stop the song when it gets up to the solo part *cough throwdown cough* don't give a shit about dime. I mean, in the years before his death he was still winning all these awards in fan voted mags across the world.

people care about someone they don't know because they looked up to him or felt some sorta inspiration from music he made. you probably have people you don't know in your life that if they died tomorrow would be a downer on your day.

how you judge influence is all a matter of opinion. Pantera broke mainstream and thus had a wider and broader range of people to influence. So while there are better bands with better players out there, some 13 year old kid who hasn't figured how to get access to these bands had a better chance of hearing a Pantera song and being influenced by that, and eventually he will come across these 'better' bands. As much as I can't stand any era of Metallica new or old, I won't deny that they were one of the bands that got me into metal when I was younger because it was so easy to get access to it, and through that I found tons of bands I consider better and bands that have influenced me truly.

As far as how special they are in metal, that's all opinion to. Some might see them as really great song writers and others might not, thats up to the listener because song writing is all personal opinion.

As far as comparing his death to 2pac/Cobain... Well, Cobain took the cowards way out and shot himself when he was supposed to be raising a child, he was a pussy and thats all there is to it. As much as people here hate rap and what not, 2pac was murdered and his death should be mourned like Dimes. I know alot of people here say "oh he was just another rapper who rapped about this this and that", but keep in mind rappers have a different background and culture and is the message in rap songs really so much worse than what is said in black/death metal songs? I'm getting side tracked, but I will say that I can't recall any rappers killing and eating each other, and how much different was the 2pac/Biggie situation from what the Dime/Phil situation was becoming?

Anyway.

So regardless of what your personal opinion is on someone like Dime, or 2pac I guess, you can't deny that because of their mainstream success they were able to influence a large amount of people that they normally wouldn't have had access to in the underground scene. And because they were killed in circumstances beyond their control and because they placed so much inspiration in people, you have to expect that people are going to mourn them and remember them like they knew them even if they never did.

fin.

you can't blame phil for the actions of some nutjob with a gun. whether or not his remarks in Metal Hammer were taken out of context or not, people say stupid shit when their feuding with one another, and i wouldn't put it passed phil to be the one saying stupider shit (and i like Phil btw). there's obviously the theory that Gale went in shooting because of phil's statements, but he's dead so we'll never be clear on his motive. but dime's family still being pissed at phil (whether they blame him or not) is a sad thing. i realize that people don't think clearly when they're grieving especially with something this tragic, but like i said before, dime's death should've brought them together instead of pushing them apart even further.

I hope you are just too young to remember the early 90's, making a statement like that. 1990-1992 was the PEAK commercial period for thrash metal. Megadeth, Slayer, and Anthrax were all playing arenas. Metallica was beyond huge. Thrash videos were all over MTV. Even Rolling Stone magazine was covering the Clash of the Titans tour.
Pantera saw the writing on the wall for the glam look and jumped on the thrash bandwagon.
"pure balls to the wall metal" was all over the media when Pantera changed styles.

I'm not taking sides here, but let's get our history correct please.
