?

i've always liked the live albums over studio. It just sucks when an older band does it and it becomes a greatest hits type of deal.

Live albums can be cool when they're done right

case and point: Iced Earth's "Alive in Athens"

I fucking love that record

Depends on the production quality of the studio albums, as well as how ambitious they are (this affects, among other things, how well the live performance can compensate for multi-tracked guitars on the studio recordings).

For instance, I think listening to old Ozzy songs (w/Randy Rhoads) is way better on the live Tribute album than it is on the studio albums, since the production and ambition of the live album is way further along. But in the case of old Metallica, although I love the Live Shit Box Set more than probably any other live recording, I couldn't recommend it OVER the first five studio albums since I think they are perfect production-wise and compositionally (often highlighted by multi-tracked guitar harmonies that the band couldn't duplicate live).

Pantera - 101 Proof is dominant. that and Type O Negative - The Origin of the Feces. even though it is technically not live, but technically live at the same time.

i usually prefer studio recordings, but there is a certain magic about live albums that makes them special to me. of course, as ShadowSD said, that all depends on the quality of the sound and the band's performance, but if done well, live albums can be as good as the best studio album.

it kinda ruins it for me a little when i find out that some live albums are actually studio albums, they just let a few people in to cheer and make it sound like the band is really playing a full live set in a club or concert hall. slayer's "live undead" album is just like that. even if the songs come out good, it kinda ruins the excitement of it.

Frampton Comes Alive!

seriosuly, though. when I was a kid, I heard a lot of Maiden's songs initially on Live After Death. It took a while to get into especially the Powerslave stuff on the studio record. I still prefer Aces High and 2 Minutes to Midnight on LAD. most of the other records, Piece Of Mind, Number of the Beast, first 2, etc. have better versions than on LAD, though.

live albums can be good or they can be horrible. I haven't heard a lot of great live albums. I much, much prefer studio albums.

I can't even count the number of times that I've seen a band live and was disappointed because the band couldn't play the leads/vocals that they laid down in a studio. I think people confuse the amount of money a musician has to spend on studio time with actual talent.

Ozzy's Speak of the Devil is the greatest live album ever.

live recording on good when they are recorded well, and most of all when the band has a good show, the main reason why alot of live albums aint good is cuz they dont quality recording or the band was having an off night

My favorite live albums are classic rock one's. Disc 1 of Umma Gumma by Pink Floyd, and Led Zeppelin's BBC Sessions are probably my favorites.

Please ignore the apostrophe I added into the word "ones".

As a general rule I prefer studio albums, I make up my mind about a band after having seeing them live but after exception I'm not fan of live recordings.
*Hawkwind - Space ritual
*The Who - Live at Leeds
*Motörhead - No sleep til Hammersmith
*Motörhead - No sleep at all
*Iron Maiden - Live after death
*Depeche Mode - 101
