with passion: so, I've had these guys CD for awhile. I thought I had seen them at the wakefield church. I will have to look in pictures cause they didn't look familar. Their set was good. It sounded a bit hollow cause they weren't turned up real loud. IMHO this is a weird band for earache to care about/sign. They are more lifeforce material. the CD is full of "midleymidley" metal parts, some break downs and a lot more of the more acustic sounding parts that they only busted out in the last song they played.

well, george is probably disappointed if he was here for decapitated..

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 4,2006 9:03pm
decapitated: they came out and immediately, every polish deathmetaler sparked up. The place smelled like the in side of otto's bus and smoke came in from behind nile's massive drumkit. Anyhow, they started up and the the sound was like cold ass. I'm pretty sure this is the worst sound I have ever heard at the palladium. Over in front of taitlyn (rustedgirlfriend) I could heard the guitars/bass/vox/drums and they were playing wicked tight, but I was standing right in front of vogg, hearing it from his monitors. 10 feet back and you could hear nothing. So I walked back from the stage in to the crowd on the other side and stood by forbes and jenna. It sounded terrible there to. Decapitated stood there play awesome tunes and it was converted into a low, echoy mess. WTF to the extreme. though after I accepted the trash sound, I coud tell the song day69 and one off nihility.
after their set, even the sound guys who had no clue who the band was were talking about how terrible the sound was for them. I've waited almost 4 years to see them again and I get that? anyhow, on stage, it was kind of like watching two different bands. the guitar/drums interacted and the bass/singer interacted, but they didn't really mix between the two groups until leaving and the bassist pounded down on the cymbols. this band had best have a second guitar player when I see them! granted, not many people can play well enough to keep up. watch vogg, I definitly see tom copying the ame moves when porphyria plays.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 4,2006 9:27pm
raging speedhorn: they played that old 70's song "money" to warm up sort of setting the sound for them. over all, the sound was decent for them. you could feel the house PA actually doing some work. They had dual vocalists which was kind of cool. The vocals were ok too. I don't like theyir CD, but it was ok live. They have a lot of energy. The music is sort of lamb-of-gody with more 70's rock sound to it. They got a few claps at the end, but it was mostly jeers and a few 'boo's and 'you guys suck's from the audience.

it's fricken cold in here.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 4,2006 10:21pm edited Feb 5,2006 11:09pm
soilent green: how to tell if you are seeing goatwhore or soilent green. Watch the singer. If his hands are constantly dropping back seemingly under the weight of invisible grapefruit, you are seeing goatwhore. If the singer is constantly pointing a gun with his fingers then you sir are seeing SG. In this cause there was a lot of pointing. The sound was so much better for them. The PA was pumped up a little bit more. Over all a great mix for them. I think with the newer CD, ben is mixing in more of the ballady goatwhore vocals. I got confused for a minute durig one of the songs, but saw him pointing so I knew. at one point he ask to see what all the "yanks" were made of. how cute.

hypocrisy is sound checking now and the drums sound fucking sick. no site of a synth though.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 4,2006 11:05pm
hypocrisy: ok, the synth tracks were done by the drummer with a little sampler so something beside him. All the oh's and ah's from the synth were there. They just plan ruled. I could completely hear everything they were doing. this almost makes up for the crappy excuse for a sound board mix that decapitated got. Almost. Of course if was so cold in there that you could see peter's breath hanging in the air as he screamed. Reminds me of the finger numbing conditions at new jersy metal and hardcorefest 2003 on the second stage. Still hypocrisy was able to rial up the audience through the pure fact that they were just that good. If I were in any other band then nile, it would have sucked going on after these metal titans. After what 13 years of releases, they have a lot of good material. I would have to say that they played mostly new stuff, but not a single song wasn't a hit. They didn't show any sgn of slowing down or stopping... And then they got cut off! I walked back stage and looked at the schedule. they still had over 5 minutes left to play. peter had his head down on something looking very distraught. someone f'd something up, royally.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 4,2006 11:08pm
ok.. wtf is up with this show.
decapitated had shitty sound
hypocrisy gets cut short
and now I'm told that I can't use flash for nile?
something is fucked up here.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 5,2006 12:09am
nile: so the reason for no flash was the "person holding up there flash really high and the camera really low." whoever that was, what an asshole. The sound for nile was pretty bad in this place as it always is for them. I thought it was fine through the monitors. I actually sounded good, but when you stepped back like 20 feet, it was the same echoy mess it always is for them.. Actually I soert of take that back. They are typically just a wall of echoy noise, but the PA wasn't turned up very loud so though echoy as you would expect from this place, you could hear everything but the bass. you probably can't tell by my pictures, but there are 5 full stacks on the stage. damn. and Man, their drummer is awesome. His legs just bounce back and forth and it sounds like ever bounce hits like 3 times. I must say that never noticed that besides the blasts that he does, almost all the other drumming is fairly slow. since the last time I saw them, dallas has worked on his frontmanship. before he wsnt very confident up there and I was thinking they should look for another cheif/versano, but he's actually really good now. I guess they played that song sarcophagus for the first time ever live at the NEMHF last year. interesting fact, I know. off to the side of karl, there is a little podium.. like when you are doing public speaking. all it's got on it is karl's towel. weird.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 5,2006 1:13am
why did hypocrisy's set get cut?
from a couple source, it's alleged that hypocrisy has been going over their time by a few minutes every night so.. this night, some one in nile decided that they got 10 minutes cut from their set. childish.. and we all pay for it. nile's come a long way since their first tour where I saw them in a coffee shop and a few nights later they played someone's basement.
*sigh*
chief! peter!

toggletoggle post by Ryan_M at Feb 5,2006 1:48am
the first band was lame, decapitated wasn't too bad, raging speedhorn had some cool grooves, but nothing special. soilent green was kind of boring; i'm not really into them. i was disappointed that hypocrisy's set got cut short, they were the only band i cared about seeing, and nile, while a decent band, are kind of boring to watch.

Decapitated's sound was fucking horrible, I am so fucking disappointed. I hate the goddamn palladium, I think I'm going to start making the drive to NY or CT on good tours cause it's not fucking worth it to go to that shithole anymore. When they played Spheres of Madness my jaw was on the floor...it was soooooo fast.

Soilent Green, band #2 of the evening I've been waiting years upon years to see and also sounded terrible. The thing rev said about the pointing made me laugh.

FUCK NILE. FUCK FUCK FUCK those assholes for cutting off Hypocrisy. Who also had shitty sound but I could make it out enough to enjoy it. A lot! I was having an awesome time and they blue balled everyone by them off. That's bullshit. Nile is tired and boring, I've seen them 500 times in the last few years and the suck ass. I also got in a fight with some douchebag guy wearing a Nile shirt who was getting all puffy-chested at our Nile bashing, so I turned around and asked him what the fuck he was looking at and the little pussy backed off. It was funny. I'm just a girl you sissy! haha

Easily impressed? Can you play any of their shit? I didn't think so. I'm actually rather critical of who I listen to. The first band was boring. Speedhorn pissed me off. Whatever though. I hear lots of people talk about how over rated Nile is and yet no body ever says why...

toggletoggle post by pam nli at Feb 5,2006 3:30pm
Because playing fast is not impressive to me, song writing is, memorability is, and they have neither, in my opinion. But my opinion is obviously not for everyone. I was mostly joking around, don't take it so personally when people don't like a band that you like. You're entitled to like whatever. I think the masses who feel that Nile are overrated think along the same lines as I do, so take it as some insight into the other sides thought process. I don't care how many notes you can play in 30 seconds, I really, really, don't. I don't care how TECHNICAL the drums are. I think they're boring and structureless...and frankly the whole EGYPTIAN DEATH METAL FROM SOUTH CAROLINA thing is pretty weak.

so you wanted my reasoning, there you go. ;)

I'm actually wicked happy that somebody on here has some reasoning behind what they say. You have some coherent thoughts on the matter too.

I got what I asked for!

I guess I'm just tired of so many people on here trashing one band for no other reason than because a lot of people like them. Glad its not the case here. Personally, I think there is more to Nile than just speed, but that just me. Hell, I could make a bunch of posts with legit reasoning about band who I feel are over reated and people on here would just be lining up to shoot me in the face. So...ya know... its cool.

I thought Deacpitated DID get fucked and I was angry, I happen to like Nile a lot, I thought they had good sound where I was. To be honest, I think the reason for the bogus sound in places was the way they were rocking the speakers, usually there on the stage, not floating above . I don't know might not be anything. And the lead singer for Hypocrisy looks EXACTLY like Christopher Walker. I needed more cowbell to say the least.

I thought it was one of the best Nile sets I've seen from them. Though I'd like to hear mostly shit off of Amongst and Black Seeds...the newer material is definately more straight to the point. I think they're an insanely fast band but I always forget that my favorite parts in their songs are at their doomy dirges.
I thought the sound was actually some of the best I've heard there in forever. I like how they're hanging the speakers. I didn't go on the floor but it sounded sweet from my booth right next to the merch section, stage right.

i don't know man, i've seen tons and tons of shows there...i remember during the first band saying aloud "it sounds diferent here" and sure enough they had an entirely new set up. is there a scientific reason to why hanging speakers is bad?

toggletoggle post by pam nli at Feb 5,2006 10:03pm
I thought everything sounded like shit, I've been to bars with better sound. The place is echoey as hell, so they hang the fucking speakers closer to the echoey ceiling...I'm no sound tech but that seems pretty fucking stupid. I also think they need to hire competent sound people. When you've got your feet up on the soundboard and the bands sound like seven layers of shit, you need to be fired.

toggletoggle post by pam nli at Feb 5,2006 10:03pm
also...Nile had the best sound of the night...but the palladium's best sound is most venue's worst sound.

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Feb 5,2006 10:09pm
i don't doubt the quality of whatever they're using...i have no idea how it works there, i've always thought that the sound guy was on stage with the band and lights were handled in the center(maybe the stage guys is just there for monitors)...but yeah, the acoustics have always sucked, you can't change that.

toggletoggle post by RustedAngel at Feb 5,2006 10:56pm edited Feb 5,2006 10:58pm
Granted the acoustics suck at the palladium, especially if it's not to full in there the sound was really terrible for this show. Nile wasn't AS BAD as the rest but still pretty bad. I've seen bands sound good downstairs before, but it's rare. AT LEAST MAKE THE GUITARS LOUD so everyone can hear them, the house soundguy's could see this.

With Passion: Not bad stuff, wasn't into it.

Decapitated: Sounded 1 gazillion times better at The Chance theater, they got fucked here. They weren't even listed on the ticket/website/flyer or anything and clearly more people care about them than the next gay band that went on. I talked to Vogg before the show and asked about why they got rid of the 2nd guitar player he said "It wasn't decapitated, we sounded completely different with him" Then he offered to have a beer but I don't drink, haha.

Raging Speedhorn: F u c k i n g - T e r r i b l e ! They had 2 vocalist and the only reason I could see why was to make their shit even more terrible than it already was. I don't know who's retarded idea it was to put them on this tour but god damn.

Solient Green: I've known about them for a while and never bothered going to see them. I don't think they are anything special musically and were kind of boring to watch.

Hypocrisy: Sound got a little better, but not by much at all. Still sounded like total mush during anything over 100bpm's.

Nile: Best sound of the night but still bad. The volume definitely was drastically reduced for them so I think that's the only reason why you could hear things better. It seemed like you couldn't hear the guitars at the beginning. Played for over an hour I think. I forgot how many times I've seen them now but I think it must be at least 8-10 times and I think this lineup is one of their strongest yet. Although Cheif had some pretty awesome facial expressions.

Great show; glad I didn't have to pay.

toggletoggle post by Shanok at Feb 5,2006 11:05pm
Totally got fucked, paid $23 to see such a short set from Hypocrisy! They sounded awesome, just as shit was getting started,it was over. Wicked dissapointed, talked to the drummer after the show,he said hypocrisy is doing a headlining tour in September, worth the wait,I guess.

toggletoggle post by Bogus Rendition at Feb 5,2006 11:08pm
So, at the Pheonix version of this show a couple weeks ago, the sound for decapitated was very similar to what is described for the Wostah' show. Also, raging speedhorn should be a 3 piece, if anything.

The sound for the 3 headliners was realatively very good. The ceiling in this place is much lower then the palladium (this place seems to have been built scrictly for concerts as opposed to the theatre of victorian times).

For the record, nile did place lashed on the slave stick in phoenix.

overall a good show. Wish I coulda worked for that tour and seen it every night for the month and a half.

its bad because the sound goes right over the floor, instead of through it. its like being on stage. plus you loose a lot of low end when the woofs from the speaker arent hitting anything. i dunno. the sound was bogus.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Feb 6,2006 8:57am
um... if you guys missed it, there were 2 sets of speakers.
one set was hanging and one set pointing up at the balcony seating. this set up was used first at the palladium for the slipknot show I believe. I heard it was awesome for them. maybe the sound guy for the bands didn't know that he was suppose to turn to lower set on (cause it sounded like they weren't on), but it's not dumb to have a set of hanging speakers if you have another set on the stage aimed at the crowd.

toggletoggle post by BSV@school at Feb 6,2006 1:30pm

Those are nice hypotheses about the night at the Palladium and Nile "fucking" Hypocrisy, but here's what really happened, for those who give a shit. Someone from Nile's crew told Hypocrisy's guitar tech (who also plays in decapitated) that Hypocrisy needs to cut one song, since they were indeed running late, due to their extensive setup(drum triggers, synth, click, etc.). So if they cut one song, they would still be a little late, but who cares about a minute or 2? I guess do to the noise and/or language barrier, the gentleman from decapitated miscontstrued the instructions. He then ran onstage and told Peter that they had to stop playing at that exact moment, which ended up fucking them. It wasn't anybody's fault. Just a communication error. You can wash the sand out of your vaginas now.

i was wondering why the guys from decapitatd were doing all the work for hypocrisy. and rev - if im not mistaken, the hanging speakers are usually on the stage, facing right at the floor. i could be wrong but thats what i remember them being like last time i was there. whatever, the shows over.

if you remember, the speakers at the palladium change every few months.

they (up to this point) rent the speakers they use, but when I was talking to someone there, they used the term "bought" which up to that point, the speakers at the palladium havent been.

you can look there at a few different shows and see that they have had a million different configiration of the speaker set up.

i don't doubt the quality of whatever they're using...i have no idea how it works there, i've always thought that the sound guy was on stage with the band and lights were handled in the center(maybe the stage guys is just there for monitors)...but yeah, the acoustics have always sucked, you can't change that.

This is probably correct. In most large venues there is one sound person at the side of the stage who does the monitor mixes and at least one other person facing the stage doing the sound that everyone else hears.

As for the general sound of the palladium, most people who talk about how shitty the palladium's sound is are the people who are listening from the pit area. If you were to listen from between the bar and where the sound guy is, it is noticably better sounding. Granted, in the case of the Palladium, even then it is still pretty bad, but its better than what you hear in the pit in front of the stage.

I have been in the photo pit, on the floor, by the sound board, and at the bar, and it all sounds like shit to me. The best sound comes from the monitors which you can only hear in the photo pit so it does fuck all for the rest of the palladiums attendees.

I'm just a girl you sissy! haha

All in all it was a horrible night.

youre a slut

About the sound, you've got to figure that most of these sound guys are used to working in much smaller venues. Then they get to the Palladium and it's a lot different than what they're used to. And the worst sound is down in the pit, you're getting a lot of echo coming down off of the empty balcony. Like someone said, the best sound is right behind the soundboard.

Dude im glad you challenged the pussy in the nile shirt,I would have had your back, not that you need any help. I was pissed about hypocrisy's short set whatever the circumstances. Nile should have been cool and let them play a few more songs. After all Hypocrisy was around way before Karl discovered you could bring a laptop onstage to project egyptian inspired intros.

they've hit the big time now, there's a guy back at the mixing desk running the laptop.
