Dude, I just bought a killer Dell. I want to know if there is anyway that I can install my old hard drive on this computer and put it in my new computer as a secondary drive so that I can use my Internet Security, Anti-Virus, and Spyware shit that is on this old hard drive. From what I have been told I need the actual software CDs for those programs in order for them to work on my new computer, is that true?

yeah. you would need the install discs.
those programs probably install DLLs in the windows/system folder.
you could try putting your old harddrive in and have that be the one the compter starts up with. then put in the new harddrive and format it.. then just copy your whole computer to the new harddrive? that might work. but that could also not work.

i'm no expert.

Yeah, you need to just reinstall those applications

Nah, that wouldn't work unless you did a windows repair installation. Even then your system might be gunky, though. I'd just reinstall those applications.

You could, however, hook up your old drive (in addition to the new one) and use it for storage.

damn
I don't have those discs, that's why I was wondering.
thanks though, it looks like I'm going to have to dump like $150 at least on security software

as long as you have your Serial number, you can probably just download it from the internet onto your new computer. That works with most software.

if your old PC is running XP, use the file nd settings transfer wizard to copy info from one to the other, then everything that didn't get copied move by hand. then format the old drive, and set the jumper to "slave" and install it in your new PC, now you have a second hard drive in your new PC
