The sound in this place is fucking crushing!

I went on a wednesday metal night and there was at least 130 people at the show

I do not even think Obriens pub holds that many and that is like the hub of the massachusetts metal scene

Burden of Liberty is really excited to be back at the Brick House, thanks to CSDO for putting us on the bill.
Although we're more influenced by Mr. Bungle and Neurosis than Godflesh . I'm a big Godflesh fan, but you probably won't hear much of that aspect in our sound aside from some of the guitar textures.

it was cool you could make it out last night, it was a fun time. what did you think of BOL?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 5,2006 9:30am
I'm going to write a review soon as I catch up on some things.

the turn out was "ok". a lot more people were there than I thought would be after my first hour there. probably like 40 people. the one thing is that the downstairs was closed. that sucked cause the regualrs werent down there to make it look like the place was happening.

on top of that, most people were wallflowers in the back. this is were the bar is BUT is also (from what I was told by someone else) where the music sounds the best. I think I need to try and hang towards the back for a song or two next time I'm there.

toggletoggle post by Otto_B.O.L. (NLi) at Jan 5,2006 10:00am
it sounds great in the back, the clarity is incredible. the sound guy really has the best seat in the house

toggletoggle post by Crotalus at Jan 5,2006 11:01am
Yeah, it sounded immensely better in the back. That sound dude was one of the better house sound guys I've come across.

this was a funny show. mostly cause there were 2 guys there from my highschool. it's always interesting to see people. one of which played with dyingmuse on the shroud of bereavemtn song dyingmuse (the acustic parts). dan, bob says hello. the other one was garcon (pronounced gar-kon) who I don't think I've eve seen with out a trenchcoat or a cigarette.

martyrvore: I had no clue that paul (CNV) was in the band. last I knew, it was only chris and matt. If you have heard the demos that I've heard, then you have heard nothing. the demos are more like the "La Grande Danse Macabre" by marduk or "Grand Declaration of War". this is very miss leading now that paul is singing. they are much more black-death and have a lot more of a total fucking war sound. this is much more raw and better put together. their set was like 5 or 6 songs, but it was all in one long set, pausing only maybe once or twice to try and tune. in the back, I heard a lot of people complaining that the guitar was way out of tune. I couldn't tell from up front, but I noticed that the second stack wasn't doing enough so it sounded a bit thing when I was in the front. the sound guy did his best to nessle the vocals into the guitar mix. the beginning couple minutes were a little rough, but after that the mix was much better. Second to the guitar tune comment was the comment from people on the outfits of these seacoast black metalers. they wore home-made studded gauntlets and other bm gear.

burden of liberty: this is my first time meeting otto. I saw his band wormd1v3r or how ever you spell it back at sick-as-in-fest on the dredlock stage. I just figured that he had dred locks. this project is a lot different from the ministry sounding band. they are a lot more proggie. I can hear the influences from mr. bungle, but a lot more proggie. sort of like mr. bungle with some of the guitar work from byzantine's first CD (not the last one that sounded like ATR). some of their vocals were annoying, but whatever. it was sort of in the same style that sam black church vocals can be annoying. the guitar work was really tight and played super fast. the bass player played one of those odd fretless basses. If I knew more about music, I could comment better.. but the way they played some of the stuff reminded me of surf music.

crotalus: they probably had the best sound of the night. these guys totally prove that old school heavy metal influence is still alive and can be played in a fresh way. these guys are the megadeath/slayer to blister earth/grave heart's metallica.
I think they got one song at the end cut off their set, bumping the trooper up. the response they got from playing this iron maiden cover was probably the best response I've seen to them and to that song. everyone in the club was singing along to their cover. there were a lot of their friends there which is odd since they are from far away.

candy striper death orgy: their set was basic CSDO fair. it was funny in the audience cause everyone I talked to was like:
"when did you first see CSDO?"
"89 at chapter 2"
"no way, I think it was 92 or 93 for me"
mike was there again behind the kit for all but a couple songs in the middle. arrick jumped right in to the middle of the set to rip through a couple songs. One thing I noticed about mike's playing was that he didn't play that good at the beginning of the set. usually, he out-plays eric and cliff, but it took him a couple songs to get back into the groove (it was also not his set). I was a little mad about this cause of the set order. I love when mike does that hitting the cymbol and grabbing it with the same hand. during one of the first songs, he does this with each hand and it looks cool. after those first couple songs, he was back. Some of the audience trashed around in a circle (mostly it was chris martryvore).

I was there, I stared and wondered what the hell I was there for? The first band went way over my head and the second band seemed decent if you were into that kind of stuff. The brickhouse claims this is a METAL NIGHT!!!! I was hoping for something better, I have seen Candy striper before and thought it was worth a look. The third band came on and started warming up, they sounded good! The singer gave me a CD after they played. They were real good, they ripped out a version of maiden's trooper which was awesome!!! I have listened to their CD all day and it is GOOD, I want to see these guys again now that I know their songs.
Candy striper was good, it was getting late and I had to get up early. The singer told me to check out this site about the show, eric seemed like a nice guy.

Where is CROTALUS from? They sound like old metallica/megadeth and play their shit well.

The drummer is smoking!

I think I'm gonna go to the next brickhouse metal nights if we get to see shit like that!

Time to kill my new Metallica album!

Crow

I think they are from the worcester area.
http://www.myspace.com/crotalus

the next metal night is listed on the events page I think. I think it's porphyria (canibal corpse, dew-scented), cannae (old hardcore guys who now play great metal), the_network (log of lamb songs played by nasum)

toggletoggle post by crow at Jan 5,2006 9:33pm
Yeah, I think they are further up in Mass than Worcester. I have seen Blistered earth before and these are some of the same guys...at least the bio says! The brick house was cool but I can do without all of the smokers. Most places where they have metal usually sucks!

Thanks for the info!

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Jan 5,2006 10:21pm
that's one reason I go to most shows in mass.
I hate smoke

We're from...uh....well...all over the place haha.

Me (drums) - Dracut
Kev - Plaistow NH
Andy - Lowell
Rutcho - Southbridge

You know, I have an account for this site, why don't I just use that instead? haha

We have to try and get the metal shows to be on Friday's or Saturday's................. A lot of people whined about having to get up early and go to work the next day. Shit, my bass player had to get up at 5am.

The show was decent. All of the bands shared bits and pieces of everybody's stuff. This show would've been way better on a weekend..
