For Immediate Release:

The Ultimate Venom Box Set, MMV

Available November 8th Through Sanctuary Records

Many bands have seemingly made a deal with the devil to mark their place in the annals of heavy metal history, but Venom was perhaps the first to outwardly flaunt such a pact and easily among the most influential. With their 1981 debut album “Welcome To Hell” and the ominous chant of, “Evil…In league with Satan!,” Venom declared war on the status quo, spit in the face of the very notion of common decency, and set the pace for what was to come in the world of extreme music. The British trio of alcohol-fueled, evil-minded wild men created a legacy unlike any other, coining the phrase “black metal” and influencing such juggernauts as Slayer and Metallica. Indeed, the very image of Cronos, Mantas and Abaddon, as well as the pentagrams and inverted crosses that adorned their album covers, helped bring an image and an attitude to heavy metal that is still poignant to this day. MMV is a long overdue, four disc testament to the legacy of Venom.

MMV is a trek into the past, featuring demos, outtakes, rarities, a radio interview and alternative versions of songs. Such impactful Venom classics as “Black Metal”, “In League With Satan”, “Live Like An Angel (Die Like A Devil)”, “Welcome To Hell”, “Bloodlust” and “Acid Queen” are all represented in fully re-mastered form. Also included is a full disc of material from the Assault album series. Re-mastered and assembled by Cronos himself, the four disc collection comes packaged in a 6”x12” box, emblazoned with Venom’s distinct logo and baphomet design. The box set includes a 60 page booklet and collector’s poster. MMV’s release comes at a very appropriate time: 2005 marks the 25th anniversary of Venom’s storied career. Any metal enthusiast should make room in their collection for this audio-history of a band that changed the face of metal forever.

Twisted Sister bastardized that 'Warriors' chant on their 'Come Out and Play' LP

Succie just redeemed it--plus I saw it this weekend but it had commercials. It is one of the best films ever.

NOW--to the subject of this coming boxset.
I guess I was hoping for some more rarities. For example, some of the tracks from the 'Deadline' album (recorded after Possessed, but never released). I know they scrapped it (and MAYBE destroyed the tapes) but I have bibliographic evidence AND the 30-second fade-in samples from it, from a decade ago.

http://www.sanctuaryrecords.co.uk/venom/home.html

check it out. They're just re-releasing the remasters from three years ago, maybe some things from 'Skeletons in the Closet', 'Eine Kleine Nachtmusik', and The 1984 Hammersmith Video (or 'Official Bootleg'--oh PLEASE let those things on Disc Four be from THAT, hahahaha). The fact that the first disc of 'From Hell to the Unknown' is just 'Welcome to Hell' re-pressed is a major slap in the face to the fans. Why release a double album if it's shit they have already? The major selling point of FHTTU was that it contained an unreleased track, 'Senile Decay.' Arguably, that made the purchase worth it.

But old habits die hard. Below you will find shit you already have on the CDs and records already purchased eons ago. Maybe the book/liner notes will add value to the set (and you know I'll most likely pick it up--for all Venom's failings I am a fan to the death), but I think there was a great deal of potential for this tracklisting, and Cronos fell well short of that goal. What about a DVD of their old videos, like Ultimate Revenge, the Video Nightmare, that reunion video (Milwaukee Metalfest was it?) Hammersmith 1984 and '85?, I mean come on, Venom were one of the most narcisstic bands on the planet, they had to have taped plenty of concerts, dontcha think? How about some shit from the VAULT guys?

You see, one of the things that troubled this band in the 80's was rehashing their tapes into crappy compilations. Granted, my introduction to them in 1985 is thanks to 'Canadian Assault', but really! Gimme a fuckin' Break!

DISC ONE:
Black Metal / Bloodlust / In League With Satan / Welcome To Hell / Sons Of Satan / Schizo / 1000 Days In Sodom / Live Like An Angel (Die Like A Devil) / In Nomine Satanas / Bitch Witch (outtake) / Manitou (bonus track) / Countess Bathory / Heaven's On Fire / To Hell And Back / Acid Queen / Hounds Of Hell (outtake) / Raise The Dead (1st demo) / Red Light Fever (1st demo) / Angel Dust (1st demo) / Die Hard / At War With Satan (intro/preview)

DISC TWO:
Intro Tape 83/84 / At War With Satan / At War With Satan (TV adverts) / Rip Ride / Cry Wolf / Stand Up (And Be Counted) / Lady Lust / 7 Gates Of Hell / Warhead / Venom Radio I.D. / Angel Dust (Lead Weight) / Mystique / Wing And A Prayer / Possessed (remix) / Intro Tape 85/86 / Nightmare / Satanachist / F.O.A.D.

DISC THREE:
Intro 1996 (bonus track) / Bloodlust (bonus track) / The Evil One / All Devils Eve / God's Forsaken / Judgement Day / Senile Decay (outtake) / Snots Shit (outtake) / Dead On Arrival (outtake) / Sadist (Mistress Of The Whip) / The Chanting Of The Priests (live)
Buried Alive / Love Amongst The Dead (live) / Flytrap / Welcome To Hell / Bloodlust (live) / Witching Hour (live) / Teacher's Pet / Poison / Teacher's Pet (live)

DISC FOUR:

Sorry to be a killjoy. I just love this band and shit like this goes down it just bums me the fuck out.

WHERE'S DEADLINEEEEEEEEEEE???

You're not being a killjoy, Sanctuary is being fucking LAME, as they have been with some other reissues (see the WARFARE double CD for example).

I know, I know

most boxsets are like this, regardless of the band

but remember that movie 'Crossroads', where Ralph Macchio (*you're the best. A-round. Nobody's gonna hold ya down*) goes in search of the lost Robert Johnson song, #30?

That's what I feel like with DEADLINE.

(in the movie it turns out there never was a #30 song)

oh they re-released Warfare?

the time to have picked up those releases woulda been in the 80's. I never did though

toggletoggle post by litacore nli at Oct 18,2005 5:24pm
*The Chanting of the Priests*
*Whoa-hoooo* (melodic and gay sounding)

HAHAHAHAHA, at least I don't see anything from 'Prime Evil' or 'Calm Before the Storm' on there

Remember that 'Calm Before the Storm', before its release, was supposed to be the soundtrack to a British Science Fiction feature length movie called 'Fairly Soon'? Of course, that never saw the light of day.

Is Eric Cook still Venom's manager? WHO DO I HAFTA BLOW TO GET A COPY OF THE DEADLINE SESSION?!?!?!?!? (no, not the lame-ass fade-ins, the whole thing--did you guys ever finish it?)

So has anyone picked this up? It's on sale for like $35-6 at Newbury and I want the box haha... Even if I have the material.

No, not exactly... They did a double CD compilation, very creatively titled Metal Anarchy. It's one of those kind of like the DESTRUCTION double CD collection that has like 70% of the tracks from a few of the releases. If they had just reissue the first 3 albums seperately, with the EP tracks as bonuses, it would have been worthwhile, but the comp just seems cheap.

I don't think the records go for tooo much on eBay though.
