Since grind wasn't an option I voted Thrash. They're tied in my book.

I don't listen to nu metal, but I enjoy the other three immensely. My heart is with thrash and death though.

Thrash no doubt.
I like old death, BM, and grind. Doom and stoner kinda bore me but some shit I can deal with.

black metal is mine but i went with thrash, soley because most thrash records from the 80's blow away 90% of the modern DM sound.

100% agreed.

Thrash from the 80's = grab a walker and an oxygen tank when being compared to 90's death metal. Mortal Decay's Forensic, Demilich's Nespithe and Necrophagist's Onset Of Putrefaction make 80's thrash sound like Winger.

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Sep 6,2005 4:08pm
the key word is MODERN.
Nespithe was 93. Mortal Decay is awesome, Forensic is my favorite UL release. aesthetically, necrophagist's vokills are the only thing that reallly give them that pure death sound, unfortunately I'd like them alot more if there were no vocals.

toggletoggle post by M))) at Sep 6,2005 4:13pm
So by Modern DM you mean the bands who use a gratuitous amount of slam riffing? I mean, I am a fan of slam, its a DM riff, but I too will agree that bands who overuse it and want to be Devourment should not exist.

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Sep 6,2005 4:21pm
Sorta, nothing has really caught my attention lately. Aside from Dying Fetus, Krisiun, Goratory, Cryptopsy, Mortem, Morbid Angel-nothing off the top of my head has truely blown me away for death metal. I still like it alot. Thrash gives me a feeling I can't get from DM. Older Death Metal is awesome and is severly overlooked like Dimilich for example. Hardly anyone even has heard the name.

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Sep 6,2005 4:24pm
Slam riffing is great for the most part, when done effectively. I've just sorta grown out of the notion that whatever the best band is on earth has to be the fastest, sickets, most techinical, super guttural, band going. half the time most of these modern bands call themselves death grind, which doesn't even add up right. it's comforting to listen to Obituary, not hear any blast beats or guttural vokills and realize that it's textbook DM.

toggletoggle post by M))) at Sep 6,2005 4:28pm
Yeah DM is certainly in limbo right now that's for sure. Hopefully the bands that are good will continue to release some sick albums, like the new Disgorge cali (though I dont dig the vocals as compared to Matti Way)

toggletoggle post by BestialOnslaught  at Sep 6,2005 4:31pm
I hate how people always write off older Thrash/DM/BM cause the production isn't what they were trained to listen to when getting into DM in the late 90's/00's... Personally I think bands like HELLHAMMER, old SODOM, SARCOFAGO, old PESTILENCE, AUTOPSY, BLASPHEMY, etc. etc. etc. are just as extreme and heavy as any current Unique Leader/United Guttural/Pathos style DM band.

toggletoggle post by M))) at Sep 6,2005 4:34pm
Not all DM bands have Cannibal Corpse production... a lot of it is filthy sounding. I wouldn't really compare any of the bands above to Unique Leader bands, they all obviously have a different approach to extreme metal, and I'm one of those people who enjoys all Pestilence (even Spheres)

toggletoggle post by BestialOnslaught  at Sep 6,2005 4:39pm
Well, I know DEMILICH, MORTAL DECAY and NECROPHAGIST don't fit that mold... I really dig Nespithe for sure... But you know what I mean. The sheer gutturality (a word?) that has progressed in DM over the years does make for a certain kind of heaviness, but I don't at all agree with the idea that it detracts from the brutality and heaviness of bands like those I listed.

Yeah, in my opinion for their time they were certainly brutal and yes, just because metal has gotten increasingly more faster and heavier, it doesnt make those past albums any less enjoyable. Consuming Impulse is a good example of an album that still levels you when you put it on.

oh I forgot about Origin, no wonder I always say their under rated.
I'm talking about Pure Death Metal - in some shape or form all those bands have probably some vague association with DM but you can't sit here and tell me that a band like Seth or Merrimack has elements of DM in their sound. PURE DEATH METAL hasn't been developing AT ALL lately. Sure there are a few bands but none of them are impressing me or the masses (if that's important). toss up between Antaeus and Behemoth for 02.

I have nothing against any of those bands, I'm cool with them all. I just need to make John happy. He has a sweeet smile, I wish my teeth looked as beautiful as his.

I only listed a bunch of releases that you should check out, because you obviously don't get to hear enough good stuff.

you called watchmaker death metal.

Yeah... Watchmaker owes way more to thrash than death, imo.

First to vote for Doom.

I voted for thrash...the best type of metal ever created

I finally heard Dissection the other day, definately one of the worst bands I have ever heard in my entire life. I am guessing that is why black metal was kept off this guy's list.

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Sep 8,2005 11:44am
I wouldn't consider dissection straight on black metal, they're rather death metal influenced.

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Sep 8,2005 11:45am
I also can't get over the fact that soulside journey is a darkthrone album, which has little to do with the current topic but oh well

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Sep 8,2005 12:10pm
The 1st 2 DISSECTION CDs rule!

And Soulside Journey is great.

toggletoggle post by paganmegan   at Sep 8,2005 12:14pm
Soulside is definitely great. It just trips me out maaan...it's so not transilvanian hunger

You should have seen how many people were shocked at the time A Blaze In The Northern Sky came out!

Here are good releases from just 2000...
... Quo Vadis - Day Into Night ...

I'm glad someone besides me knows of Quo Vadis...

But I'm still the only person I've seen with a Quo Vadis Shirt

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Sep 8,2005 12:33pm
I have a QUO VADIS longsleeve from the demo.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Sep 8,2005 12:34pm
I met those guys in person in 1996 at the Wetlands in NYC.

toggletoggle post by BornSoVile   at Sep 8,2005 3:14pm
I've always thought of Dissection as more of a Heavy Metal band with Black/Thrash in their sound.

toggletoggle post by AUTOPSY_666   at Sep 8,2005 5:53pm
No one cares what you think, you are obviously clueless.
