...opinion or thoughts about the war and stuff, I saw this posted somewhere and thought it was interesting... I could give a shit about celebrities but this was an awesome gesture that I hadn't heard of till I stumbled onto it...

----------------
"Don't know whether you heard about this but Denzel Washington and his family visited the troups at Brook Army Medical Center, in San Antonio,Texas (BAMC) the other day. This is where soldiers that have been evacuated from Germany come to be hospitalized in the States, especially burn victims. They have buildings there called Fisher Houses. The Fisher House is a hotel where soldiers' families can stay, for little or no charge, while their soldier is staying in the hospital. BAMC has quite a few of these houses on base but as you can imagine, they are almost completely filled most of the time.

While Denzel Washington was visiting BAMC, they gave him a tour of one of the Fisher Houses. He asked how much one of them would cost to build. He took his check book out and wrote a check for the full amount right there on the spot. The soldiers overseas were amazed to hear this story and want to get the word out to the American public, because it warmed their hearts to hear it.

The question I have is why does Alec Baldwin, MADonna, Sean Penn and other Hollywood types make front page news with their anti-everything America crap and this doesn't even make page 3 in the Metro section of any newspaper...

i think what powerkok is talking about is when sean penn took out a full page ad and wrote an open letter to america, or some shit. which was one of the dumbest things i have ever half read and cringed with embaressment about.

but anyways, he didnt make the front page, he just bought a full page ad. i dont think shit like this would make the front page unless it was a very slow news day.

some of you need to read the constitution. if you feel like are country is in the WRONG direction, it is far more unamerican to just sit there waving a flag going," duhhh suppor thte troops" than to actually say something about it. our country was founded on the ideas of protest and free speech, and to inhibit your speech simply because it's unpatriotic is about as un-american as communism itself.

wait, why would anyone who doesnt like the direction the country is going in, wave a flag and say support the troops? wouldnt that be reserved for people who do like the way the country is going and support the war/troops?
also, our country was founded on alot more than the idea of protest and free speech - i thinkyou need to read a history book or something. thats the most over simplification anyone could possibly say.
also, to inhibit your free speech because you are completely vapid and unintelligent is the most patriotic thing anyone could possibly do!! trust me on that one!

first of all, i'm majoring in political science-so i've read a history book or two.

second, all i'm saying is that those who want people to be complacent about this war and show support and stop being "unamerican" are the unamerican ones.

and yes, there were many more things that the country was founded on. freedom of speech was a big one though, don't you think?

toggletoggle post by dan. at Jun 15,2005 1:59pm
no, i dont see how its "unamerican" to have an opinion - even if that opinion is that someone should support the actions of their government. actually, i think thats very "american".

i dont necesarily agree with the bush administration or the war - but i understand the need for war. i think its pretty clear that this whole thing was about oil. well guess what? we need oil. so as much as this war sucks, us not having oil would suck a whooole lot more. thats pretty much the bottom line. what i dont understand is people bugging out about how we should do this or that - but there plan never really covers how the country should be run. or if it does, its this completely dillusional idealism crap that could never possibly have a practicial application (please see: anarchism).

and yeah, freedom of speech is what makes america great. where some asshole like me can have a bunch of offensive tattoos and a foul mouth and not get his head chopped off. thats pretty great. and the way alot of things are going when it comes to that area, isnt so great.
but no, i think this country was founded on more important things, like progressive taxation. i dont know man, i think the country was founded on alot of good ideas, one not being any more important than the next.

toggletoggle post by BestialOnslaught  at Jun 15,2005 2:53pm
The Moor is most definitely on to something... Blind obedience to the state and a desire to stifle dissent is most definitely un-American. Our country was founded on the principles of limited, removable government and free expression, but a lot of Republicans would like to pretend it was founded on the 10 Commandments or some kind of feudal obedience doctrine instead. And they're wrong.

toggletoggle post by BestialOnslaught  at Jun 15,2005 2:54pm
Progressive taxation is most definitely a 20th century idea, I'm sure the founders didn't consider the idea, as they equated income tax with theft.

toggletoggle post by dan. at Jun 15,2005 2:56pm
i dont see how apathetic action, like waving a flag is the desire to stifle dissent. for the most part, i dont think people really give a shit or are even aware of real dissent, nevermind are actively participating in the dismantling of subversive groups. the whole "american" and "unamerican" thing doesnt really make sense to me either...

toggletoggle post by dan. at Jun 15,2005 3:01pm
ok, maybe i worded that wrong. what i meant was one of the main reasons leading to the revolution was a need for a change in tax laws...which i guess would be progressive ideas beyond what they were dealing with, taxation without representation...

i was gonna point that out, but i'm sorta done arguing about this.

progressive tax is the idea of taxing those who make more a larger percentage of their wage, as opposed to regressive taxes which put a larger burden on the lower classes.

whatever.

can't we all just get along?

Theres a difference between free speech and sedition. Those in the mainstream media who focus only the negative aspects of the war just to make a president they don't like look bad, are in effect undermining those who signed up to be called to a job you and I have not the testicular fortitude to carry out.

theres really not. hence why the sedition part of the "alien and sedition" acts was ruled unconstitutional BASED ON the free speech part of the constitution.
