I like the muddiness and the extreme noise of the original. As Converge has progressed, they've managed to focus and clean up their sound, which I don't think was a good thing at all...The out of tune-ness, the walls of overblown sound, the feedback, the clipping....that's what I liked about their sound...
the newer albums they do like YFM and Jane Doe get more streamlined (well, in their defense, YFM is actually much dirtier than Jane Doe...save for a few sparse tracks). I think in the end the clarity isn't the thrill for me but rather the total collapse of normalcy into this dark, gloomy world that I don't see as well in a clear, crisp recording.
