so I turn the big 22 this weekend, and I'm thinking of using some b-day cash to get an iPod for my car/work mainly because I'm sick of burning cd's and transporting them all over the place. I'm not resorting to the freeipod thing because I think it's annoying. hahaha.

I'm considering either the 40gig or the 60gig and getting an FM transmitter, stereo adapter, ect with it.

2 things kind of scare me about these damn things...

1. The battery isn't easily changeable, you can't run it directly into an AC but only run it while the battery is charging. I guess if you use them a lot the battery will die within a year.

2. iTunes seems like a piece of shit. My gf has one and apparently you can't have more than one 'library' of music which means if you go to a friends house you can't hook your iPod up to their machine just to get an album or a couple of songs, you'd have to replace all the file's on your iPod. Is there any other software that works and allows you to have more control over what you put and take off your ipod?

anything else I should know about these things?

ive heard hell stories about the screen burning out within the year. and yes, ive also heard stories like that concerning the battery life.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 16,2005 1:14pm
the batteries are now easily changeable.
screens burning out within a year will be fixed free.

you can have more than one library in itunes. I actually like the itunes program a lot. the only thing I want them to do is have the title of the song show up in the task bar.

I don't have the time right now, could someone go through and find all the posts where to said that ipods were gay and that we should just use laptops?

how are the batteries easily changable?

how can you have more than one library in itunes?

yes, I said you should use your laptop to play select mp3's since you already have it sitting next to you while you do your radio show.

this is all great cause i was considering buying one myself. so please continue it's helping me figure out what to buy.

how easy is it to use as a car stereo is the main question i got, i hate using burnt cds in my truck, they get scratched and die quickly.

you can get one of those tape things if you have a tape player, or what I'm going to do is get the FM transmitter which allows you to just tune into whatever unused radio signal you select to hear your shit.

or you can get it professionally setup with your car stereo somehow.

toggletoggle post by dreadkill  at May 16,2005 1:29pm
don't get an fm transmitter. i had a tape deck in my truck and i plugged the ipod into that using the adapter i had from a discman. the sound wasn't great, but it wasn't good enough. i bought a new stereo for my truck a couple years ago, thinking i could just get an fm transmitter to use with the ipod. dumbest move ever. the sound quality sucks. it's like trying to listen to a weak radio station with lots of static and fading out. i should have bought a stereo with an aux input to plug my pod in directly. i lug cds around now. it sucks.

my gf has an fm transmitter by monster cable and I can't tell the difference in sound quality, I've never heard it fade in and out ever. If it ever does all you gotta do is change the station. I'm sure there are shitty quality transmitters you can buy, and I guess it would depend on your car too if it's old?

so i like the idea of an ipod, i just wanna know it works in a car before i get one. cause i need a new stereo anyways

1.) if you buy the apple care protection plan, they will replace the battery for free for 3 years

2.) iTunes sucks, go to the winamp website and download the iPod plugin for winamp, I use it, it PWNS!

3.) the FM Transmitter to get is the iCarPlay by Monster (I have one) it's another $65 or so, but well worth it!

4.) remember to have a free USB 2.0 port that's DIRECTLY on your motherboard (not one of the front panel ones) because the iPod charges over the USB 2.0 connection and it requires a "high power" one.

I love my iPod (20GB) I wouldn't give it up for anything. but do yourself a favor, and get a case for it, mine looks like it was in downtown Baghdad during the air campaigns and I only got it at xmas...

To me, the deciding factor is the battery.

What?! I can replace te battery for only a hundred bucks, PLUS I get to lose all the sons I had saved on my Ipod and haveto send it in for 2-4 weeks? SWEET!

Aaron, wich one of those offers would you say is easiest to complete?

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 16,2005 3:09pm
you don't lose the songs since they will be on your computer. plus, this is a harddive, not RAMdrive.
the battery lasts about 18 months of constant use and then you can pay $99 for a new battery.

i know that the credit card app is free...if you tell me what the other offers are i can tell you

iPods are shit. In a momentary lapse of all reason I went out and purchased a 60g iPod for the 450 plus tax. Now I have a ton of music so it took me approx. 12 hours to get all my shit into iTunes and organized. Then had troubles because my laptop refused to recognize it once I plugged it in. Once I got it all solved worked like a charm for exactly 9 days. One the 9th day the thing up and dies. It refuses to turn on. So I take it to the store (the apple one in the Cambridge side). I tell the front desk its broken and I want a new one. They send me to the back to the "Genius Bar". Its too easy to make jokes so I won't. All said and done I sat there in "queue" for 2 1/2 hours waiting to be told what I already knew. During this time I counted no less than 15-20 other iPod customers that had all various problems 75% of them had to get shipped out to be "fixed/replaced". After the 2 1/2 hours I still wasn't helped so I got up and found the manager... he confirmed it was dead and I could go to the front and get a new one. Needless to say I went to the front and got my money back... took the cash walked to Cambridge Sound Works and bought a 60g Creative Zen for 299.99. It took 4 hours to organize my music and upload it into the player and has been working like a charm for weeks. FUCK APPLE FUCK THE IPOD and U2!!!

if you download a program called senuti, you can pull songs off a friend's ipod onto your computer. my friend and i rape each other's pods all the time with that program. it's great.

toggletoggle post by Niccolai   at May 16,2005 3:42pm
I don't like the 99$ battery idea.
and I think when it comes to replacing them, alot of customers will have problems with the battery as well (wether or not they knew about the battery when they bought a unit) so hopefully in the very near future, Ipods will have a mnuch more interchangable design for the batteries.

zen is a bit bigger, doesn't support firewire, or the FM transmitter thing.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at May 16,2005 3:55pm
I liked the zens when they first came out... but they are way too bulky.
IMHO, the ipods are the only way to go. If you are a bitch about the battery, look at online and you can find directions for replacing it yourself for $30.

--> Yes, you can chose songs, albums, even entire artists and load 'em on. make a sick playlist? you can add the .pls file and it'll add all the corresponding tracks.

--> The iCarPlay PWNS, hands down, the apple one won't charge while you use it, so it's kinda silly to get that one, seeing since apple reccommends the monster one too... lol!

--> What motherboard do you have? I can probably find the chipset update for you that will enable USB2.0

I'm having a tought time chosing between the zen and Ipod.
The zen is a tiny bit bigger, they both have the same features that I would use (the Ipod has a bit extra, but I wouldn't get use out of it), the zens cheaper but doesn't work with the Itrip...
I guess it will boil down to the usability of the software they come with.

the problem with the transmitters isn't static or 'fading in and out', it's just the sound quality in general. it does suck, i'm sorry to say.

also note: if you have any music on your hard drive and iPod ONLY, (meaning no disc/back-up copy) you are risking losing it if your computer crashes. iPods are a 1-way-only device; you send music from computer to iPod, but NOT vice versa. Last fall my i had to wipe & re-install my OS and lost all of my tunes... i thought 'no problem, they're all in my iPod'. WRONG. if i connected the iPod to the computer after iTunes was wiped clean, that would have erased everything on the iPod. I would have lost a ton of music that i had downloaded but never burned to disc.

i had to download IpodRip, which was being beta-tested at the time, in order to send my tunes from my iPod back to my computer. it worked fine, thankfully.

i wouldn't say iPods suck, but you better be ready for some WORK in setting them up and then maintaining them. if you're up for that, they're great. how else can you carry 500 albums around in your pocket?

The battery is under the front cover (released by a switch) and is similar to a cell phone battery... and just as easy to replace. I still have had no problems with the zen (its is a little bigger than the iPod) but its a small trade off to not have to deal with a fucking "genius bar" and come on $299 for 60 gig, a cover (a small thing but iPod comes with nothing), and the ease of replacing the battery (which by the way ran continuously for almost 20 hours) is a great price. I like the iriver but its not big enough yet...

This problem can be alleviated by NOT using iTunes and use WinAMP with the iPod Plugin. I can add and remove music at will with this combo, and NEVER have to worry about losing something if my OS goes to shit (and considering it's winblows, that happens all too frequently)

you still have to carry around mp3 cd's and burn cd of mp3's and possibly even deal with scratched cd's. It's a minor improvement over regular cd's but not by much!

if you buy the Apple Care Protection plan for $40 when you buy your iPod, you don't have to worry about that, they will replace the battery for you for free (well the $40 that you paid for the plan) for 3 years.

so if people actually listened to sales people once in a while, noone would bitch about this issue...

and to anyone that has an iPod and dosen't have a Apple Care Plan, you can still go get one...

Thats really some shit, because I know people who get screwed by the Apple Care Protection Plan because of the clause listed as: Repair or Replacement Service Provided
a. Repair or Replacement Service. If during the Coverage Period there is a defect in materials or workmanship of the Covered Equipment,
or, after being fully charged and the iPod hardware product operating under Standard Operations, the capacity of the Battery to hold
an electrical charge has depleted fifty (50%) percent or more from its original specification, Apple will, at its option, repair or replace
the affected Covered Equipment.

The Keyword are: "Apple will, at its option"

This can be found within terms of the agreement at http://images.apple.com/support/products/p...applecare_ipod_t_and_c_11182003.pdf

although IPODS are a way only device, there are ways to circumvent that. search for a program COPYPOD. with that you can take music from the IPOD and transfer it to a computer. the program runs kind of slowly, but it works. that way if your comp crashes you can back up your files, or if you want to trade shit with other people you can do it from IPOD to computer. hope that helps.

$30 - 100 cdr's. (approx 70 gig)
$20 - 50 cd carrying booklet (about the size of a good sandwich)
$29 - Red mp3/cd discman at Walmart, plus car adapter kit.

You tell me about the hassle of lugging around a CD player and a book of CD's, and I'll laugh at the extra $450 you spent, and the additional repair and replacement expenditures you'll incur over the life of your Ipod.

By the way, if you're looking JUST for your car, Aaron posted a link many moons ago to a remote/wireless system that transmits music directly from your computer to a harddrive in your car while you sleep. Maybe he can post that link again, looked like a great idea to me.

by the way, the setup I listed above works quite well. I typed out a 3 page "menu" as I burned each CDR, listing the artist and what albums appeared on each CDR. The last Pillory tour I brough it along and it was GREAT. All we had to do was whip out the menu, decide what we wanted to listen to, and grab the cd labelled with the corresponding number. I fit an average of 11 albums each disc. Some fit way more, as many metal albums are under 40 min.

So I got a 30gb iSuck Photo...

1st thing I see when it comes out of the package is this and I immediately start laughing..

Things I've learned so far:
1. ITunes blows, Use the Winamp Ipod plugin.
2. The Transpod FM transmitter/holder/charger sucks compared to the Monster Icarplay (sound quality wise)
3. I couldn't get firewire to work at first, but now I can get both usb and firewire to work.
4. Ipods and accessories are expensive.
5. I wish I could plug the ipod directly into my car deck without speding another $300.

So far I have about 1300 songs on it, got the stereo rca jack for the stereo at work so I don't have to fuck with cd's usually ever anymore.

I'm digging it so far...

IPOD UPDATE

So I must reaffirm my hatred for APPLE.

So the iPod 30gb photo I bought less than a month ago suddenly didn't turn on sunday morning. After never leaving it in my car, having it in a protective sleeve and it still died. So I brought it back to best buy only to be in line behind 2 people also returning their broken ipods. One dude was returning his broken 40gb, well they don't make the 40gb anymore so he was like so do I get the 60gb photo and they were like yes. Then the exchange lady tells him that he'll have to pay an extra $50 to get the 60gb and he flipped out and was like WHY should I have to pay? hahaha, so then she gets a manager and I watch them bicker back and forth while I exchange mine.

It took about 15 minutes for them to give me a new one. I even kept the ac adapter/usb cable from the broken one so now I have 2. It only took me about 15 minutes to reload my ipod with about 1700 songs. A couple weeks ago I got a stereo adapter which allows me to connect the thing to my factory car stereo, it worked awesome but when I plugged in my new ipod now it's only outputting through the right side of my car and flickering on and off on the left side. GAY.

anyways, yeah, fucking Apple ipods, great concept that I really really want to work but they still fucking blow.

Never buy anything from Apple. They cannot manufacture anything decent, and it will cost you far more than a normal piece of hardware. Not only that, but supporting Apple is to support the gay, Jewish, black, hippie, pedophile and Democratic agendas all at once. Boycott Apple!

I got a and ipod Mini and its been fine. I heard from a guy at work that was the way to go because he bought the newer ipods with the higher memory and has already gone through 4.

I think the minis are sick, I just wish they had a tiny bit more space on them.
a 10 gig mini would be godly.

if you have a ipod that you use with an ibook --- is it possible to get music from friends playlists who aren't using a apple computer without having to reformat your ipod?
