Im starting to wonder if eddie invented the mullet...or at least poularized it to the point of redundancy.
Im gonna contribute to this post as soon as I get some pics of my rig!! |

I think it's hillarious that EVH has all the Marshall's. I heard he actually does use marshalls even though he's endorsed by peavey. hehe. |

LOL! that's what I've heard too...
I'll take some pics of my rig tonihgt at practice and post 'em to this thread once I get home. |
I don't get what people do with all that equipment.
like why are there two heads in some pics? do they just route signal to all the different amps and then to a cab or two a piece?
I grew up doing the head + cab = your sound thing. I never got into rack shit nor do I even really understand it, so a lot of this is bizarre to me. I've rarely ever gone to shows in stadiums (been to the centrum like 2x) so I don't even know what to think when it comes to playing those places.
basically I've always worked to have a good, analog head with a responsive, well-rounded set of speakers. Nothing more, nothing less.
anyone care to do amplifier 101 for me? |
the_taste_of_cigarettes said: anyone care to do amplifier 101 for me? |
I'm sure between RustedAngel and myself we could do a whole clinic on amp 101...
you up for it? |
why does corgan have two 10"/8" mini little combos? for monitors? |
umm....well basically poweramps just push your preamp sound in a rack system. so if you have a preamp like pod or a digitech, then your poweramp just uses that as a 'front end'
other than that, I dont think you really need all that equip in those pics...theyre rock stars, im sure theyre very eccentric. |
the_taste_of_cigarettes said: why does corgan have two 10"/8" mini little combos? for monitors? |
maybe onstage ear tuning.....maybe a crappy sound he gets and likes in one of their many crappy sounding guitar breaks. |

two heads? sometimes backup in case one fails, but also you can run two at the same time in more than one cab obviously. Or have each with different settings and you can A/B between the two.
As far as all the additional rack gear, to be honest, I don't even know. You'd have to be a super pro guitar tech to figure out what's going on just from looking at the pictures. You'd really have to have someone show you what's going on. I'm sure you need some monstrous sound to play arena's and for it to not sound whimpy. Sometimes they have like huge wall's of stacks in arena's so they'd need many heads to power it all. Some people just prefer rack gear, you can customize your sound quite a bit more and make it sound good if you really know what you're doing. I don't know what I'm doing haha, I prefer the sound/tone's of head's. I don't think many rack's by themselves can hold up against most 'boutique' heads. That's why you see some Bogner's in with the rack stuff. There's tons of technical shit to sound that's why there are professional guitar/amp tech's that just do that shit as a job and probably know way more than the musician using all the gear.
Those little mini-combo's? I'm not sure exactly, but possibly for the guitar tech to quickly test guitars or for billy to warmup... |
Billy Sheehan's (Mr Big/Steve Vai) gear (at one point in time)
and here's my rig:
nice rig mike. bass players take notice. |
nice rig Kalopsia.
How much volume can you get out of the SWR head? Is that 550 solid state watts? How much do you have to push the amp to be heard? |
RustedAngel said: I think it's hillarious that EVH has all the Marshall's. I heard he actually does use marshalls even though he's endorsed by peavey. hehe. |
He's not endorsed by Peavey anymore. |
my shit like three months ago... now tonsof all my rack gear from my bedroom is right next to the computer. yay for synths:
THREE GAMEBOYS. yeah i am great.
I mean, WAS. I know they discontinued the 5150's. |
ohyeah hey losers:
now on the back it says 5150... i think i'm going to light it on fire and smash it the next time i play.
those panoramic pictures are hillarious. |
yeah and i actually manage to record shit too haha...
you should see the clean setup... two smallish racks and like $3000 worth of synths and other gear, but all i record with is gameboy directly to computer.
and i can easily one up those photos with a photo collage of my room. |
mine's in the back left. shitty picture of it. pay no mind to the fagguloids. |
RustedAngel said: BILLY CORGAN's Rig:

I bet you can really feel the prescence of those little combo amps during one of his gigs. He probably only usees those and has the rest just for show. |
billy fucking corgan. jesus. look at that rig. |
anyone have a picture of John Petrucci's rig? that thing's friggin IMMENSE |
i want a matamp rig, even if they are kind of trendy in the "rock"world, the are pretty fair price for handmade tube amps....and i love the muddy sound. Before i can afford that im gonna get a laney set-up....well now back to the pictures. |
my rig is nothing to drool over (yet), but its got love.
i keep the crate 4x12 (loaded with celestion vintage 30s) on my side, and i keep the 2 2x12s (one loaded with blue marvels, the other with crap that i will be replacing) on the bass side. i have all these cabs because it is a full stack that i can transport all myself (i dont have a truck to lug around 2 4x12s with). eventally, i will be pulling a ron from malignancy, and getting 2 pod pros and running each one into separate cabs. i will drool that day. and you notice how i always play my soloist? its cus a have a really crappy backup. but at the moment i am building a rhoads copy that you will have to see to believe. pictures will be up someday. |
The little combo amps are most likely there for his guitar tech to use for reference. They're not mic'd and they're not facing the crowd so they definitely have no intention of being heard by anyone outside of a three-foot radius.
The point of multiple identical amps is to send the same tone through more wattage to increase stage-volume before involving the house PA. Like in that pic of EVH all those heads are running the same shit paired to the same cabs or a small variety of cabs so he's pushing 1200 watts (12 amps X 100w each). He can route to all these amps at once via switch-panels like the blue one on top of the effects rack in Corgan's pic.
Sometimes big stage-setups use dummy cabs (empty cabs that look exactly like normal useable ones) just to take up space on stage and make it look like they've got more to their sound than they do. |
By the way, this thread is fucking awesome. I have neither a camera nor anything really worth showing off at the moment though. |
Hey Tom, Peavey actually just discontinued the name "5150", it's not the "6505" and they have the plus version too that is equivelent of the 5150 II. the board is the EXACT same as the 5150, just a different name and wooden filler for the front. also, they charge a tad more for them now.
And someone mentioned EVH playing the Marshalls, When you're EVH you can tell whoever "endorses" you what you're gonna play Im sure. PLus he still played the 5150's exclusivley. He may have only had a head unit contract too.. who knows. |
Here's SOME of my rig...

In that first pic, my Johnson Millenium 150 has it's back to the camera. But that's my Framus Dragon 4X12 Cabinet with my American Fender Strat.
that second pic of the Ibanez S470QS is also mine, but i'm thining of selling it.
I also own a Fender Princeton chorus 120, An Epi PL Standard (My first axe) and my main guitar for STF, a first run ESP/LTD Viper.
Im not a fan of rack equipment... I just rock my Sig 5150 with that Framus cab and I play through your basic Boss Noise surpressor and Boss tuner. |

What's the benefit of having two different heads going into the same amp for the same guitar?
I'm also taking this opportunity to ask anyone for suggestions in getting a power amp for my Marshal JMP-1 |

well, you would have double the power than just using one head. You could have 2 different settings, maybe more mids on one head, and scooped mids on the other. Tons of possibilities.
for a poweramp, you could get a marshall 50/50 or a 100/100 if you want to power like 2 stacks, haha. orrrrrrrrr you could get this ;)
Is it sold in regular guitar stores? I was also thinking of getting a Genz Bens (or however the fuck it's spelled) cab to finish off the half-stack. I just don't know how these pieces will sound together. |
not as pricey as most but here's mine.
Would you all now please post your addresses and work schedules? Fo rill' though, is anybody familiar with Ear Candy cabs? www.earcandycabs.com
I'll be ordering my first by month's end - Just waiting on that tax refund. Eventually, I'll have two of their Buzzbomb cabs (one loaded with Eminence Swamp Thangs, the other with Eminence Black Powders) powered by my sweet-tits Mesa Simul 2/95 (the one with the 6L6's AND EL34's). That, coupled with my twin dueling neckthru BC Rich Warlocks (American made, natch!) - one 6, one 7-string will have you weeping. Pics to come. |

well i have an 8 ohm cabinet so i'm only pushing out 350 watts, if i had another cab or a 4 ohm cab i'd be getting the full 550. it's a tube head. one tube powers it, but it still packs a pretty good punch. in practice, my band members start bitching if i have my volume set at 4 or higher. live: i gotta put it roughly around 5 or 6. |
I remember when I was in band that had a bass player that had a real bass amp. It was god damn loud, and we had to tell him to turn it down every 10 seconds. It was just the ampeg svt pro with the 4x10 cab. |
John Petrucci's rig makes me want to throw up... and his wife makes me want to throw it in her, lol! |

Thanks for the info. Those EMGs in your Spector are wicked hot too. I have jazz bass that I modded from passive to EMG J pickups and its at least 5 times louder now.

heres my rig...pretty simple. No frills chawmp. |
nice kok. bet that sounds fucking sweet. |
thats my pretty basic rig. right now my poor ass has an epihpone LP standard, but for some reason it doesn't sound to bad out of that set up. i plan on getting a gibson SG or a ESP that doesn't have EMG's in it. and eventually get a sonic maximizer.
also Rob's drum set. just becuase i have pictures. it's changed quite a bit since this picture. |

sweet. earcraft is so fucking slow. my engl has been there since last monday and mark hasn't touched it yet. I need to learn how to bias myself. |
ahh yes dovahh earcraft.....I dunno what to think about that place....they have some decent stuff, but theyre prices are a bit outrageous. |

When I was in AC I would just tune it down until it sounded cool.
One of the advantages of not having a bass player is there's no one to be in tune with.
It would probably range anywhere from C down to low G depending on what mood I was in that day.
If you're trying to figure out stuff from I Like it When You Die good luck. Seth did the overdubs on that because I was still pretty green at the time and we were in a rush due to our enormous recording budget from Earache. But I think my tracks and Seth's tracks are slightly out of tune with each other so it sounds kinda weird. If you put the balance all the way to either the left or right you will only hear one guitar track and that's more the way it was supposed to sound. (one of us is the left side and one of us is the right, I forget which is which)
Every release after that is all me though.

See, that's like head valhalla. My playing doesn't warrant any of those heads. I have some high end cabs, but those fucking heads.... I'd just.... there are maybe four people on earth who could do that setup justice. |
