I have noticed over the last few weeks since everyone is always talking about the red sox that some people say they don't support or watch sports becase the players get over payed yet those same people go to the movies and buy DVDs to support actors who get over payed as well. I say sweet logic assholes.

we should worry more about how much they are "paid".

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Oct 28,2004 12:46pm
Movie studios don't ask the government to spend my tax dollars on a new stadium, and then close nearby streets to the general public.

Anyways, I doubt there's one single person who won't watch sports solely because of player salaries. You should try a little harder when you read.

toggletoggle post by the_reverend   at Oct 28,2004 12:51pm
plus, watching sports is similar to watching soft-core gay porn.

toggletoggle post by Josh_Martin at Oct 28,2004 12:52pm
And yes, caring about pro-sports is gay.
If you're in the game I could understand caring about it.
Maybe even 50 years ago, when teams were actually teams (as opposed to a constantly changing roster of men picked by some millionaire in a suit) I could see caring about it as a spectator.
But now? I just don't get it. What is there to care about?

Yeah, especially football. Guys in tights, all bent over in a row, playing grabass on a field.

On a similar note, did you ever notice that diaper commercials are basically softcore baby-porn?

and then charge those same tax payers to pay astronomical fees for tickets, season passes and parking for the stadium they just helped pay to be built......so the normal middle/lower class tax payer cannot even afford to go to these games at these stadiums!

In the case of the New England Patriots, Bob Kraft pretty much BORROWED the money. He is technically leasing the field from the state of Massachusetts. So you should all know what you are talking about before you start bitching. I don't know how other states do it, and I don't care.

You also need to take into account that the Boston Red Sox have not taken a dime of public money, so why are people talking crap like that? The Patriots certainly don't gouge for parking prices.

There is a trickle down economy for sports teams, and the money the state makes by taxing the players (both home and visiting) brings a lot of money back to the state, but I doubt any of you were smart enough to think of that either. Besides that, surrounding businesses make TONS of money off of these teams. I was at a bar last night watching the game with at least 300 other people. On Wednesday nights at this bar, there is nobody, EVER. Yet they had to cut people off at the door while people trickled in and out. They made TONS of money off of last night and a bunch of other nights in the playoffs. Now I wasn't there, but I am willing to bet that just about every other bar in all of New England were the same way. Then we have the stores. One store sold over 1100 WS Champs tshirts today at 20 bucks a pop. Do the math. That's TWO HOURS of "work."

For one, we have parking around Fenway, NONE of which is owned by the team. NONE. If it was, ticket prices would probably be lower. I think parking prices are fucking ridiculous, but that's life in Boston, which is a super huge city to begin with. I parked somewhere downtown for two hours once and paid 20 bucks. So don't say it's just because of sports, because it's not.

Second, ticket prices. Boston has the highest ticket prices in Major League Baseball. They also have the smallest stadium and the second highest payroll. Do the math and figure it out. And guess what, they sold out EVERY SINGLE GAME this year. People paid over $10,000 for tickets to the World Series on the streets. Not just the rich people, your average Joe Sports Fan.

But you know what? The end result was that the Boston Red Sox just won a World fucking Series. They can raise ticket prices by 10 bucks on each ticket and still sell out EVERY SINGLE GAME, and it's going to be the middle and lower class people going. It's cheaper for me to drive to Toronto to go to a Red Sox game then it is to go to one in Boston. Same thing with Baltimore and even Spring Training. I went to three spring training games this year, flew down, stayed in a hotel for three nights, spent $300 bucks. It would probably cost me 100 bucks to get the same seats in Fenway Park, and that's just one night.

The bottom line is that the reason tax dollars get thrown at sports teams is for these EXACT reasons. They don't do it for the sake of having a nice shiny stadium, they do it because it makes fiscal sense, and that is the undesputable truth.

Wrong. They weren't GIVEN a dime because Finneran and Birmingham told them to go fuck off. They sure as fuck asked for several million dimes.
My stadium comment was directed solely at the Red Sox.

I don't disagree with anything else you said. I just don't care. I shouldn't have to fund a faggot baseball stadium if I don't want to.

They didn't get a dime, and have never taken a dime. So thank you for proving me RIGHT.

The city and state don't want to fork over money for the Sox even though they pump MILIONS AND MILLIONS AND MILLIONS back into the economy, and with the plans they had in place through ticket taxes and financing, they would have been pumping every dollar they took back into the Massachusetts economy and more. It's no different then the Fortune 500 companies that also take federal handouts. NO FUCKING DIFFERENT. So check your facts before you bitch. A new stadium for the Sox would mean MILLIONS for the city and state, regardless of federal funding. It's just typical Boston politics for them to not give the money and accept the paybacks they get out of it anyway.

The Red Sox NEED a new stadium. I love Fenway but I hate paying 20 bucks for bleacher seats if I am lucky enough to actually buy them through the Red Sox, 40-50 if I go through an agency. People do it and manage, but it fucking sucks. If I lived in Colorado or Arizona or Detroit or Milwaukee, Pittsburgh, Tampa Bay, hell, even Atlanta, I could walk up to the window day of game and get great seats for 20 bucks. If the Sox had a stadium with another 15,000 seats, they'd sell them all, they'd have the almighty luxary boxes and seat licensing they want and need to keep regular ticket prices down and affordable, they could hopefully have their own parking areas to drive down costs there, etc, etc, etc. More revenue = more money the team can spend on their players = no worries about losing guys like Pedro, Varitek, Cabrera and everyone else. Yankee Stadium holds 55,000 people. Fenway Park holds 34,000. Both sell out every night and have comparable ticket prices. Now we know why the Yankees can afford near 200 million dollar payrolls...

And the players make the money they make because the teams are making enough money to afford it and still make money. If they weren't making what they were, that would just mean greedy owners were making it all...

while i don't agree with tax money being spent on dumb shit, the argument can be made that a new stadium can bring more revenue to a depressed area.

cleveland, baltimore, and san francisco all benefitted from having new stadiums built.
