seriously, has blistered earth even played a show since metalfest 2 years ago? has ravage done ANYTHING significant in the 800000 years they've been playing? Besides of course playing jarrods and other useless venues in front of the same 8 people (their huge fanbase they keep claiming they have). If they're so amazing why can't their band get anywhere past open mic night at Sydneys or whatever. All I can picture when I hear that band is a bunch of d&d kids prancing around on stage in costumes at the newton community center. TERRIBLE. Life in Vain i've never even heard, and i've never heard anyone even mention them except for occasional scattered show listings. A Cold Reality is a fun time, and they're awsome kids, but i don't know if i'd place them as one of the top 5 metal bands in mass.

singing on cd, singign live is 2 way different things, i think ravage's music is actually good, the guitar work is really good, the voice though, ehh, if you going for an iron maiden/helloween/hammerfall sound, you're gonna need a ridicuously good singer

blistered earth is a pretty good band. i saw them at that blind guardian show... they ripped that place up. the accursed is pretty good too... they have a "the crown" type of feel. a cold reality kicks ass... justin is right, their new material will make you leave skidmarks in your skibbies. i havent heard that one band and ravage has gotten enjoyable. before i didnt really dig them, but now they are pretty good. i didnt really think their drummer was solid enough but now i guess he left so yeah... also, their bassist looks hella gay. but yeah, all is well enough...

3. Terminally Your Aborted Ghost (for coming up with some really great death grind without ripping off skinless)
2. In Dire Need (for being one of the most visually and auibly exciting bands i've ever seen in mass, if not ever and doing everything in their power to come up with new things and push their music further)
1. The Red Chord (for being one of the most innovative bands i've ever heard and for undoubtedly being one of the hardest working "metal" bands i've ever seen. They started off as absolute nobodies, and they worked their way from the ground up on nothing but pure effort. Now they're selling out shows at the palladium, but they're never too good to stop and say whats up to me.)

criteria for this list: bands that can be classified as metal (not metalcore) and are currently active.

thats the top 5 list. if your band isn't on it it's probably because you suck.

5. Random Acts of Violence...not many people know about them, some really talented thrash.

4. Dysentery...some of the most brutal shit, from like, kids that are in high school, for Christs sake.

3. Upon Crimson Wings...they've def. come a long way, from opening shows, now to headlining them.

2. Bane of Existence...they've def. got what it takes to be signed to a major metal record label.

1. Eternal Suffering...yeah, they arent around anymore, but to me they will always be the nastiest thing that ever came out of Mass. The sickest pits, the nastiest breakdown/tech/blasting ever. Along with Sevenday Curse, these guys created metal as we know it in Mass.

Scum Bitch did play some shows with Drew/Microphallus on vocals. I think Scum Bitch are still around, but without Drew. Psychosadistic Haterapist is my brother Jay, and Drews band. Jay is the other main member of our black/grind/thrash band Hirudinea.

One day soon me, Jay, Drew, and Ben (Hirudinea/Witch Tomb/Erotonomicon/Aiwass) are going to start a real goregrind band in the vein of old Impetigo, Gut, Butcher ABC, Vomito, demo/first album era Carcass, Kutabre, old Pungent Stench, and Repulsion. Kind of a continuation, but better Mortified (our old grind band 96-99). Lack of time is the only thing stopping it. Then we will play all these gay, I mean awesome "death/grind" shows, show all the high school bands how it's done, and hopefully fight the crowd while we sloppyplay our awesome original songs. Since when is metal not open to subjectivity?? If you want to call what bands like Ravage do "true metal" thats fine, you all can have "true metal". I've always referred to it as power metal, and I don't like power metal, I never have and I never will. Talent's one thing, but when the music just sounds like a gay pride parade marching through my ears I don't exactly feel an overwhelming need to listen to it. I'm nobodys mother here, I don't have to like anything, get it straight. Funny thing about opinions; everyone supports the right to have them until theirs get stepped on.

the red chord and in dire need are most certainly metal. their roots are in metal, they play metal, they are metal. The fact that they don't have long hair or leather pants shouldn't disqualify them from it. Neither should the fact that they have breakdowns and presumably target what you might call "hardcore kids". Probably because they don't have the ambition to dick around playing bar shows in front of 10 people trying to scrap together something called a "metal scene."

I grew up on the same "metal" that most of the kids in the "metal scene" did. Hell, Slayer has been my favorite band since I was 13, and still is. But if metal is about hanging out at bars watching "true metal" bands try and pull off iron maiden covers, and looking down on other people for not having guitar solos then metal can blow me. I've been in metal bands before, I've seen what the so called "true metal" scene is capable of....a whole lot of talk, backed up by a whole lot of sitting around. not to mention a whole lot of whining that even makes emo kids look half respectable.

A. speaking of getting facts straight, I never said anything about the Accursed. They're obviously a very talented band, their drummer (from my understanding) taught Eric IDN to play drums. I'm hardly a fan of their music, and if prompted to I'd make that known, but for the purpose of this argument I never said anything about the Accursed....oh shit, did that just ruin half your statement? my bad.

and for the record, any band willing to cough up enough money, or with a label willing to do the same can play milwakee metal fest. i know this, did you? coal chamber played milwakee too, i don't see you polishing their scene points.

B. in dire need most certainly got it's roots from metal. Ross (who founded the band) was in Vengence in Blood, and Beyond the Sixth Seal to name a few bands. Eric was in Thousands Shall Fall. Dave was in VIB too. What they play is death grind. May not be Deicide, but hey, here's a radical thought.....maybe every death band shouldn't sound like Deicide....maybe. and if there are any "fashioncore kids" in the IDN fanbase they are a minority.

C. the red chord drew alot of their influences from hardcore GIVEN, but a majority of their influences came from death metal. Old Red Chord was a much better example of their metal influences, but they're still very much there and they're far from being your a-typical ""metalcore"" band.

D. hardcore to me is madball, buried alive, strife, slapshot etc. Not a band with slam death breakdowns, grind riffs, blast beats and an 8 foot tall cape verdean kid screeching and growling (i.e. in dire need). They're a metal band that appeals to hardcore kids for the same reason Dying Fetus and Internal Bleeding do...they're fun. That seems to be the mysterious factor that has evaded people like you who think you're perpetuating some righteous cause by bashing other people in defense of "true metal"....i listen to what I listen to because it's fun. Talent is great. Talent is wonderful. Everyone can appreciate talent to some extent. But the bottom line is, if it's not fun to listen to, if the shows aren't fun to goto then why bother? Standing around banging my head and yelling "PANTERA" at some band at a bar isn't fun to me.

To elaborate a little further, the days of Ascendency and Bane of Existence are gone(which is a shame) and the "fag" stylings of yesterday are now more prominent. Pants that fit(not tight or girly), sneakers, hats(not flatbrimmed, but practical), and the occassional breakdown thrown in with neckwork that's celebrated instead of shunned or sneered at. All these people are mixed with the Joe/NotCommon's Uniformed idea of metal listeners and there's little to no conflict.
