More for blues/rock then metal. [/QUOTE] If you're not using a ton of amp distortion, you can put the pedal up front and it should work fine. Lots of people will use an overdrive pedal for this (like that Maxon, or any other member of the Tube Screamer extended family) and just turn the drive all the way down. So you increase the level without adding too much distortion, and those pedals also usually boost the midrange a bit which is good for this kind of thing.
