I think you're being closed minded. Just because YOU care about metal culture, doesn't mean that someone else has to in order to be a real metalhead. I honestly couldn't care less what's popular and what's not. Which yeah, some of my more "trendy" friends make fun of me for. (for instance, liking THE FACELESS, apparently i'm not supposed to because they're too popular and hip... or The Black Dahlia Murder, which i also like etc...) but you think because i don't care what's hip and what's not that i'm not a real metalhead? That i pretend to like the music? How does that even make sense? You're saying that if i DON'T care about what's popular and what's not, that I DON'T really like the music for myself?

Sorry bud, but it totally sounds like you got this shit backwards. IMHO metal dudes who get down on popular/hip bands because they're "watering down" the scene are just too afraid of loosing their "individuallity." You can't STAND the thought that you're NOT actually different from everyone else in the world... that you're just another person, with nothing that makes you special...

Because you see, I don't listen to metal to feel "different" or to be "an individual", i do it because i love the music. Anyone who ever tries to say that i SHOULD care about metal culture, or what is/isn't hip, is just fooling themselves, and in it for ALL the wrong reasons.
